  1. Hm.. it does sound like airlock type behavior. Problem is that running it with the cap off is all I had to do last time I changed the coolant on my car, however we were squeezing the radiator hoses the whole time as the car warmed up to force any air round and out of the system...


  2. Well, surely they're going to get requests like this on a regular basis. Do they not have some sort of data warehouse where this kind of information can be extracted fairly easily?

     

    I worked for an educational initiative under the government until recently and know that we could extract information of any type from our database of students (of 120,000+ members, parents, professionals) in a few clicks. I appreciate that there are considerably more cars in there but with big powerful SQL servers we have these days, the principle is the same.. it'd just take 1 minute to run rather than 5 seconds or something ;)


  3. Well, as predicted, I got fobbed off by the DVLA. They sent me a letter pack back which seemed nice and thick, I got all excited as I thought it might be breakdowns by year / model, etc but it was just a letter saying along the lines of the following:

     

    In order to get this data we would need to create new tables and new reports in order to obtain the information you need. On this basis, we have no requirement to comply with the FOI to obtain this information and therefore are not going to fullfill your request. Here are the contact details for people you can pay who MIGHT be able to help you.

     

    Not impressed. I work in IT. I fail to see how it would take any more than a few lines of SQL code to extract the information about how many goddamn cars they have registered on their system - unless of course they have a really, really inefficient setup. They stated on their website that if it would require resources totalling up to over £500 for any single FOI request, they could not do it. Even a SQL consultant charging £1000 a day would be able to generate the required code in a matter of minutes, so what am I missing here?

     

    My flat mate, handily, works for the local district council in an office full of Freedom of Information Act lawyers.. i've passed the letter to him, and he's going to enquire about it tomorrow for me.


  4. Certain finishes do seem to suit certain products, thats for sure. I used to love Zymol cleaner wax on my old G60 yet on my current Corrado, its a total pig to work with and have given up. Find that Autoglym polish works really well on this car with great results, yet always found it tiresome on the G60. Go figure.


  5. Yeah.. stick at it mate. There are only so many things that can go wrong on the old valver engines as they aren't mega mega complex compared to whats out there these days.

     

    Have you changed the fuel filter since you've owned the car? Its never done as a service item but really should be.. a common cause of problems at higher revs is a blocked and gunged up old fuel filter simply because the engine is demanding more fuel and the blocked filter can't get it through fast enough..

     

    If its of any use, they never produced a Haynes manual for the Corrado - however, fortunately for us 9A owners, THIS Haynes manual covers our engine as it was used in the Passat of that era.... might be of some use with your fault finding of your problem? :)


  6. That does not bode well at all. The hilarious thing there of course is that there is nothing stopping one family from having 4 reasonably heavy polluting cars (say like a few big mercs, landrover, etc) yet some enthusiast who say cycles to work but has (for example) an MG from the 70's that he dusts off and takes to car shows over the summer potentially will have his car scrapped.

     

    In my opinion, yet another completely ill concieved green scheme.


  7. Well as your car is post '92, you're going to need to know a "friendly" MOT test station to have any chance of passing your MOT..

     

    So your best bet is probably a sports cat. They're not bank bustingly expensive - Milltek do one, I believe for about £250..


  8. I think you've just done too much to it to get rid of it mate. I'd do what Mave says.. take it off the road, store it somewhere (you can get a lock up for not much per month) and buy a shed to get you round for a while. Then you've got the Rado waiting for you when you have the time and money to finish it off! :)


  9. Indeed. I was expecting some stuff to be duff.. but he said to me "You must have spent a lot on this?" and I didn't really think about it, but then he mentioned running gear, etc so then realised that its had so much new stuff in 12 months including:

     

    Rear axle bushes, top mounts, ball joints, wishbones, wheel bearings, 4 new tyres, new HT leads, new (used) ISV, various intake parts, new front engine mount, various flanges / gaskets.. but the majority of it has been labour free as its been done thanks 2cc / Tempest / Supercharged! And its been a good learning experience :)


  10. Save starting a new thread thought I might as well bump this up to say that the old girl sailed through her MOT this morning. Was worried as, at my last visit to Stealth, was told the CAT was a bit dead.

     

    At the time I was experiencing issues with the ISV and I know the timing was well advanced.. well since then I got a a new ISV and the timing has been set to factory so I just figured i'd go for it and see how it was at the MOT (running on BP Ultimate) - the car sailed through with no advisories on anything! Even got comments about the good condition of the car which is always nice.

     

    So thats that off my mind for another year! :)
