HOOOOGE SERVICE BILL!!!!!! ARRRRRGGGGHH

Oh my god,

Just got the report back from the garage who did the service on the C this morning.....,£797!!!

 

Needs a lot a work done they say, not a dealership but VAG independant specialists and reputable enough...,

 

10K service, two wheel bearings, fan belt, power steering belt, 2 CV boots, 2 brake pipes, 2 rear axle mounting bushes, pagid front pads, headlamp fault fixed, weld exhaust and of course labour...,

 

What do you guys reckon??

It's a killer guys cause looked at the estimate more closely and parts are only £180....,it's the labour cost of IRO £575 that is more of a bit**!!!! But to replace bushes they have to drop the rear axle they said which is 4-5 hours labour in itself they say...,

 

Any comments??

That's outrageous!!! How can they justify £575 labour? Do you not have any friends who are mechanics that could do it for you?

Apparently the labour charge is as follows:

 

14.75 hrs @ £35 per hour = £575 or thereabouts

 

BOO HOO

 

Suppose I could find someone to do bits, but rear axle bushes are nightmare apparently.....,

..sorry, sorry! i was once in the same place as you guys, give it a couple years and thousands of dollars and you'll see what i mean. it all came into perspective when someone told me "it's a feckin porsche man!" ..the speed, the looks, the cost.

 

there are two ways to maintain your car.

 

A) go to the shop, bring your lube

B) source the parts and tools you need yourself, find a friend who knows his head from his ass, dig in!

 

for the bigger jobs, like the rear axle bushes, pay the shop labour to do it.. but you're still better off buying the parts yourself and showing up at the shop with them.

 

don't just accept your fate and bend over!

Thats a typical Corrado ownership bill if ever I heard it :(

 

You should speak to other VW specialists in the UK and see what they suggest the work might cost.. try giving Stealth Racing a call for example.

Im sure I heard someone had a quote for axle bushes before from Bedrock VW's and it was about £180-£200.

Just had interesting conversation with Darren from PD, poss the garage have just added on about 5 or 6 hours of unnecessary labour...,Interestingly enough the VAG dealership qouted only £30 more than specialist and that was with double labour cost!!! By the way its Bavaria Auto Werke in Aberdeen if anyone is interested

Erm, you could have done all those jobs yourself with some help if you're not mechanically minded. There's no way I'd pay nearly £800 for little jobs like those on what is essentially a MK2 Golf!

man thats crazy,thats why i do my own work on teh car and to be honest i dont trust mechanics these days. That means that if i would have taken my car to the mechanic to do all that work i have doen would have costed me more than 4k LOL is crazy isnt it.

Well if i were you, you could always give the Volkscentre a ring, I use them all the time (Star for performance jobs) And always found them reasonable. On a first name basis with them all and they are very handy and friendly to work with. They had 3 C's in a day had mine in, so they know their stuff. Worth gettin a quote. I know its a pain gettin booked in, but they can sort something out.

Hi all,

Just got back from discussions with Bavaria Auto-Werke, quote "the Uk's 1st established German Car Specialist.". Got three other quotes from other specialist VAG service agents. All of their estimates were cheaper than Bavaria Auto-Werke in Aberdeen, including main VAG dealer Specialist Cars!!!! Told Bavaria they were taking the p***. Got them to break down the jobs into labour for each, final labour quote had been overcharged by £310 ish!! I paid the service fee and walked away and didn't look back...,How do these people reckon they can get away with it?? Instead C is going into Aberdeen Volks Centre in Kingswells, nr Aberdeen who are going to do all the work for a much more reasonable price i.e about £300 less!!!!

The moral of the story:

The previous owner may have changed the cambelt*, but if they didn't change the tensioner at the same time, your engine is on borrowed time...

 

*Obviously, this is not a problem if you are a VR6 owner. If you are, then you only need to worry anout worn bores on cylinders 1 and 6, worn valve guides and chain tensioners that decide to take a rest... :shock:

I have all ways found doing your own maitance and repairs to a car gives so much more confidence and saves a boat load of money :D

Me and my mate have done it on my MK2, his 1st MK2, a mates MK1, and most recently his 2nd MK2. Have got it down to a fine art.....less than 2 hours. :lol:

I've got my g60 down to about 45 mins to do a cam belt... I'd also advise changing the crank bolt while you are stripping the lot down...

 

Mine's just sheared off leaving my nice new flowed and ported head looking somewhat unhappy and possibly bent all 'cos of a £1.50 bolt... :cry:

 

Ah well, I guess it's time for a 2litre, detailed, balanced, flowed, ported and "played with" engine then... :lol: 8)

 

Bits to change when doing a cam belt on a G60/16V IMHO are:

 

4x allen bolts that hold the crank charger/PAS pulley on (use stainless ones!)

6x allen bolts that hold the other 2 pulleys on (waterpump and PS pump, again use stainless ones)

Crank bolt :roll:

Cam belt tensioner

PS belt

And, possibly, if you don't know it's history, Charger belt...

Oh, and Cam Belt :roll: :lol:
