I read somewhere (though I can't remember where) that after certain mileage, things under the bonnet need changing.

For example, after 100k you should change/check/replace .....?

Am I making any sense?

 

I have a j reg 16v. If anyone understands what the hell I'm going on about, please advise!

Just looked, don't think I have it.

 

I think I read a buying guide somewhere that gave a list of things that tend to give up after a certain mileage.

Mine has 130k on it.

 

So far I've replaced:

- Brakes (disks/pads calipers/hoses);

- Exhaust;

- Suspension (dampers/bushes and top-mounts);

- Engine/gearbox mounts;

- Radiator;

- Coolant hoses and thermostat housing;

- Headgasket;

- Battery;

- Engine sensors (pretty much all of them - plus the ISV).

 

Otherwise the rest has been service items.

 

That said, I have the following ready to go on:

- Coilpack (new);

- Cylinderhead (recon);

- Front wishbones (new);

- Steering Gear (2nd hand);

- Clutch;

- Timing chains and tensioners.

 

All depends on the type of use its had though...

i just looked it mine and it only lists the stuff that needs to be done at 10k and 30k intervals, however what I did find (amongst the piles of paper in my 'car' folder) was a print out from the old CCGB site which says the head on a 16v will probably need a rebuild at 100k, and could also do with the valve seals replacing...hope that helps a bit!

There's not anything set in stone as far as i'm aware, but Mike Edwards list pretty much covers it!!

I bought mine on 136k with dodgy history from 90K+. I bought the car from a friend who had loads of work done through a local garage, the head was ported and polished at 120K after the gasket blew! So head gasket and cam belt at least prob the first things to get done. Rebuild prob a good idea if fund allow. Do you have any history with the car? whats been done so far?

I bought the car in September, and as far as I can see from the paperwork I was given with it not much has been done.

The head rebuild was what I was thinking about. How much would that set me back?

I'd replace the coolant hoses as a precaution as if the car overheats due to coolant loss you're looking at a new head gasket which is ££££. One of mine went the other day, luckily enough I was passing my local VW specialist at the time so there was no damage!

Thats how I've looked after mine, make sure you keep an eye on everything, if something is not functioning correctly repair/replace it, otherwise if its all ok, leave it alone.

yeah, I used to work on that theory until the engine got scrapped by one bolt shearing off (nothing could have been done to predict that one... :roll: ) so I just replaced EVERYTHING in the engine bay :oops: Should last for a good few miles now! ;)

 

Replacing stuff as and when it gets tatty/gives up is a good way of doing things, as long as you make sure you inspect the car regularly... ;)

Best to believe in routine servicing and preventative maintenance. I dont let original coolant hoses go past 100-120k miles for a start.

In this era of mobile phones, though, it is not so imperative that you avoid a breakdown at all costs. Hovever, on a sleety, winter's night, on a busy highway, still a scary experience best avoided, whatever your gender. I always have a good look at as many things on my daughter's car as I can when she drops in.
