potatonet 0 Posted March 4, 2005 How do I remove crank bolt without pulling engine?
stevemac 0 Posted March 4, 2005 Lock the flywheel with a large flat screwdriver, wedged between the ring gear & bell housing (may need a friend to help you).

h100vw 0 Posted March 4, 2005 Get third friend with large feet to stand on the brakes with the car in gear. :D Gavin Don't use a std bolt as a replacement. Get one from an A1 with the DX engine.
potatonet 0 Posted March 4, 2005 what car and model would have one? and why?
stevemac 0 Posted March 4, 2005 what car and model would have one? and why?Golf GTI MK1 has a DX engine - the crank bolt is not a "stretch" bolt like the Corrado one.
stevemac 0 Posted March 4, 2005 Get third friend with large feet to stand on the brakes with the car in gear. :D Gavin Noooo - the disc retaining screw will just shear off...
Henny 0 Posted March 4, 2005 Get third friend with large feet to stand on the brakes with the car in gear. :D Gavin Noooo - the disc retaining screw will just shear off... Not if you have the wheels on, or at least the wheel bolts in through the disks... That's how I did mine anyway...
potatonet 0 Posted March 4, 2005 will a A1 84 GTI crank bolt work? they said something about ball and screw?
Scruffythefirst 0 Posted March 4, 2005 Air powered rattle gun will do the least damage to everything else :) You can buy eletric ones for £20 these days
potatonet 0 Posted March 5, 2005 so will the 84 GTI bolt work? removing is easy, cause I think its loose otherwise I will follow stevemac's instructions.
steveo29 0 Posted March 5, 2005 yeah i used the dx bolt and washer, with a little thread lock i worried for ages about undoing the old one but it came undone about as easy as a tight wheel nut, no need to jam the flywheel etc
h100vw 0 Posted March 5, 2005 My passat one came off easy cos the chuffer had spun the crank pulley  I fitted a std bolt while the DX one came in. Even that was hard to get out. I wouldn't fit one with a gun, especially a std one, the constant shocking can't be good for it. Wheelbolts are made of different steel and not done up as tight. stevemac 0 Posted March 5, 2005 Workshp airgun - turned to "max" wouldn't shift mine - I had to swing on a 2ft breaker bar to get the old bolt out..
