question about doing rear axle bushes

i was reading up on changing my rear axle bushes...i read that you need to set up the axle to 12% or something with a special vag tool....then lever the bush over to one side when tightening it

 

i planed to undo the pivot bolt....does all that still apply???

This setup procedure applies only if you remove the bracket. This bracket does not require to be removed, and to remove the pivot bolt is the way to go. The use of the special VAG tool for removal and refitting of the bushes does however make life a whole lot easier. Make sure you orientate the bushes correctly when pressing them in.

John book me in please!!!!. 16vg60 showed me that mine were knackered at 102k on the car, they are crumbling.

16vg60 id planned to use poly bushes for ease of fitting and the fact that they last well....if i was to get vag bushes whats the chances of me fitting them at home with special tools??

 

should i expect the pivot bolt to be mucho tight...i can emagine yanking it off the axle stands

there not too hard to do at home and you dont need the vw tool just some good quaity pullers and a socket just abit smaller than the bush to push them out and one bigger for pulling them back in,should only take about an hour either side,hopefully.this is the method i've used for the last 10 years and it's allways worked for me.but as 16VG60, said make sure you put them in the right way 8) .

you say sockets...any idea on what size roughly? ive got most stuff up to 30mm ,just wana be prepared

Any idea on how much you could expect to pay for the parts and labour on fitting a new set of rear axle bushes.

 

I caually mentioned it to a local VW 'specialist' and was told £160 for genuine VAG rubber- sounded a lot to me..

thats probably right for parts and labour,the bushes are about £15 each+vat and probably £65 per hour labour.

Just ordered soma VAG rear bushes and they are 28.78+VAT each for a G60

Got some powerflex ones, but after doing some more research decided to fit VAG ones instead, To keep the rear wheel steer effect.

It's worth noting that on the VR6, budget for a new brake proportioning valve (£70 from Stealth, £100 and something from VW) as it needs to come off to do the bushes and they usually ALWAYS need cutting off due to seizing bolts, which writes the valve off.

 

It's a job well worth doing as it refreshes the car's balance and rear end grip.

Or you could soak it each day for a few days in WD40 and use good tools and it will come off, hopefully!

How do you know if the bushes need doing? Would you actually feel it, or hear clonking??

The rear end would feel very soggy and slow to react when going into hard bends. You'd also got lift-off oversteer on wet roundabouts quite easily too.

 

When they collapse completely, you'll get some nasty clonnks too.

Is it possible to see/feel any play under inspection usually??

Nope, the only indicator is seeing if the rubber is badly split and/or cracked. The rubber usually starts peeling away from the metal casing aswell...and if you can see any of that, replace them.

Funny you should say that, I was using it only tonight but said WD40 cos didn't know if anyone would know what i was on about if i'd said Plus-Gas!
