V3DUB 0 Posted May 24, 2005 Hardly corrado but i just wanted your opinions. I have a 2.9 vr6 engine and one of my second cars is a mk1 golf gti. I want to drop the engine into the golf. What are your opinions, has this been done before?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 24, 2005 Yes, Awesome GTI did it several years ago. Do a mid-engine RWD conversion and turbo it 8)
coolrado 0 Posted May 24, 2005 or chuck a porsche 944 engine in it like the one in pvw  i thought it looked standard from the outside until they showed it next to a standard one
Henny 0 Posted May 25, 2005 to fit the VR into the MKI you need to completely re-build the front chassis legs to get the engine to fit into the bay, then you need to re-engineer the front suspension to use subframes (the MKI doens't have 'em...) so you can mount the engine and gearbox. You need a cable shift mechanism and hydraulic clutch setup fitting to the MKI shell and some SERIOUS brake upgrades... It IS do-able, but don't think it's an easy job... There's a couple of MKI VR6s around now, some are much better than others (the Awesome one was just that... fecking amazingly well done... 8) :notworthy: )... Good luck if you decide to do it.... It's a lot easier to drop one in a MKII though... ;)
dazzyvr6 0 Posted May 25, 2005 http://www.designadubs.com/index.html i think matt was one of the first to do a mk1 golf vr6 conversion and to top it off its 4x4 aswell
Geo 0 Posted May 25, 2005 I sold a complete 2.8 drivetrain out of a mk3 to a guy last week who was planning to put it in a mk1. I didn't know if it was possible but I didn't tell him that :D
