kvwloon 0 Posted March 4, 2006 Bit late on to this thread, but hell yeah, MUCH better with the weight fitted. Easy mod.
crdo16v 0 Posted March 4, 2006 I think the "special VW adjustment tool" is a bit of a legend, whenever you mention it at a VW dealer or to a VW specialist mechanic they just look at you as if you've asked them about the whereabouts of El Dorado or how to crack the enigma code (yes, I know it has been cracked but you get the picture). I reckon if the dealer ever had them they either chucked it out years ago or it is locked deep in their vaults & has to be signed for in triplicate before it can see the light of day. :study:
Ice White Socks 0 Posted March 5, 2006 How to adjust the gear cables is the one thing question I have never seen fully answered on this forum- there is a special tool cos its in the Bentley Manual- but like you say they are as rare as rocking horse poop! Its been said a few times before but its also worth soaking all the linkages at the gearbox end in WD40- that can help the shift no-end Cheers

Toad 0 Posted November 24, 2007 Afternoon... Bit of a revival on this one... I had a spare shift weight knocking around so I tried fitting it to my early valver with the square PAS tank, but the weight interferes on the return pipe running into it, I could spend a little while tomorrow fitting a late style tank and extending my pipes to reach it, but... Is it really worth my effort in doing this?? Will my gear change be magically better because I've fitted the weight?? Cheers Tom
davidwort 0 Posted November 25, 2007 lift the reservoir out of it's bracket, squeeze the sides of the bracket together about 5-10mm with an adjustable wrench (and something to protect the bracket paint, like a rag) and the reservoir will then sit a bit higher and clear the weight, you might have to twist the feed hose a bit from the resevoir to rack, may need to slacken and then re-tightenen the jubilee clip a small amount. It does make the shift in/out feel heavier and more purposeful, once you get the weight moving the momentum does seem to improve the shift a fair bit. Cheers for the idea Mr Wort, Did this and the weight just clears the pipe. Could do with being a little narrower still, but it's a good start. Shift is better. I can't feel the transition in the gearbox like I used to, and I think it might result in a quicker shift, TBH I've only just started the car for the first time since adding the shifter and I need to bleed the clutch slave a little more as the biting point is almost on the floor. Encouraging start though, will book an MOT in for a fortnights time, and keep my fingers crossed.
