When I get a VR6 - If I had 1k to mod - where to start

When I buy a VR6 (looking @ 2 hopefully this w/end) **any one else not to far from Milton Keynes selling one btw?** I want to keep it as standard as possible & resist modding it & spending loads of money (already got a Scoob & a Pug 1.9 that do that for me).

 

But if say I have 1k to throw its way, where do I start?

 

Brakes, handling, engine, bling :wink: ???

 

I am not saying that I will & would rather put the 1k in to a better car but.....

Best place to start would be a set of Koni T/As and H&R springs, a set of 288mm or 312mm brakes, a BMC and a stainless exhaust...

 

That's if it doesn't need the chains and tensioners done first, that is...!

Yup budget for Koni TA's and H&R's and think about getting the rear axle bushes done too as it makes a huge difference.

 

That should eat up most of your 1k if you do the suspension properly but it is more than worth it.

 

Standard brakes are good if the pads and discs are in a good state and that the car stays on a standard set of speedlines.

use the 1k to fix all the little thgings that WILL need doing on it first,,,

Assuming there are no major problems with the car my order of preference would be, assuming they have not already been done...

 

New Poly Bushes throughout (the front)

New OE rear beam bushes.

New balljoints, track rods, bearings etc...

Then decent coilovers.

 

That would total about £1K but will make a huge difference to the handling of the car.

 

Then you can start playing at a later date, knowing you have a proper solid basis.

I've spent almost 1.5k since buying my VR 6 months ago.

 

First thing was a new alarm, Autowatch RLi160 - £280 fitted. My old alarm wasn't working and insurance was cheaper including the fitting of the alarm than with no alarm at all!

 

The day the alarm was fitted my standard exhaust starting blowing so I decided to get a stainless steel one fitted, £380.

 

Finaly the most recent mod I have made is the Koni/H&R combo. One of my rear shocks was leaking before so it was the right time to do it :) . £680

 

Next on the list is OBD2 again this isn't really out of choice, my ECU is knackered so I may as well convert... All the stuff Jay listed I plan on doing eventualy but unfortunately because of all the things that have gone wrong I was unable to budget for bushes and ball joints etc. Having said that all the stuff I have done I would have done eventualy just not straight away!

 

So... what I say is budget for things that may go wrong because with a Corrado ya never know!! :)

well the complete Powerflex front end poly bush kit you are looking at about £120 from somewhere like

That would be wishbone bushes, front cross member bushes, steering rack bush, arb bushes.

 

Their FK Konisport coilovers are £572.84 (inc VAT)

 

O.E balljoints bearings and ARB droplinks would be about £200 all in at a guess..

 

I did exactly the above to mine and I am absolutely amazed with how well the car rides now. I had coilovers before but until I did the full rebuild they were no-one near their potential.

Just new ones from VW. Makes a huge difference if the old ones are knackered which they often are.

Not that expensive, bit of a bu99er of a job to do though.

Well he did say a start, so £1k on getting the suspension sorted would be my first step.

 

Then another £1k on engine work

 

Then another £1k on misc stuff breaking
