having one of those weeks! (thinking of selling my vr!)

Recommended Posts

my vr's going into the garage on tuesday for a new clutch & i'm getting the timing chains done & a top end service! obviously the huge expense of getting that done has pxxsed me off slightly but while putting my speedlines back on the car i've noticed the front discs are on the way out! i know it's not a massively expensive job to do but i'm just sick of chucking money at it! driving to & from worK through traffic isn't doing the car any good either. plus the cost of petrol & insurance & stuff i'm just thinking it might be a good time to sell the car when its had all the work done & i'll probably get a decent price for it. i know for a fact i'll regret it & i've no doubt i'll come back to a corrado at some point but my sensible side is winning the battle of wills with the non-sensible side!

anyway, been looking at tdi boras & was told you can chip then. been looking at the 130bhp one but is it just as easy to chip the 115bhp ones & can they be chipped up to the same sort of bhp? also what sort of bhp can you get up to, would like as much as poss coz i'm gonna miss the poke of the vr!

still in two minds what to do though but any info would be great!

"Bora". Says it all, really.

The reality of owning and running an old car is a little less than the lovely green pastures you once imagined, isn't it? Particularly when that old car is a VW with a bit of "we can charge you more" rarity thrown in for free.

Weve all be through these nightmere phases where the car eats the wallet.

The next time you take it out on a open road you know itll be worth it.

Chin up.

i really don't relish driving any other car apart from my corrado. tbh i'm more of a biker but i just love corrados so much! was really the only car i ever wanted to own! but like dr mat says, the reality is f-n expensive! was thinking of dropping down to a g60 but have no idea of running costs & from what i've heard there's not much in it between vr's & g60's. never thought i'd hear myself say i just need a boring, reliable, cheap to run car that'll get me about!

Don't let the discs get to you - you could buy something newer/more sensible and still have to bigger & more expensive problems than discs. Newer car's can have random electrical nightmares whereas the C is pretty damn reliable in that area because its much simpler.

Change the discs yourself it's easy- see the Wiki forum.

yeah don't do it mate. i've just driven a focus for the morning, and i can't tell you how good it felt to park it up and drop down into the seat of the vr and roar off into the distance :)

you'll regret it and will only have to start again with another rado!

ALL cars cost money to run - FACT! For some reason some Corrado owners resent paying out for general maintenance and repairs. I can understand that, I'd rather buy a Plasma TV than replace worn out white goods..... but don't lose site of what the car will be like after the expenditure. Think of it as a midlife nip-tuck for the old beast

People are mislead into thinking chopping the Rado in for something else will be the end of their monthly car outgoings - wrong, wrong, and triple wrong, with grated cheddar on top.

My car has been laid up for a month and I've been using a Rover 25. Got back in a Supercharged VR6 the other day and it was like going from a , well, Rover 25 to a 911....so I know I'm doing the right thing bolting on a turbo ;-)

i know once all the work is done she'll be totally sweet again & i've put money asside for all the work so that's not really the issue. (although spending a grand on my car does stick in the throat somewhat!) it's more the petrol & insurance costs. i've worked out i'll save somewhere in the region of 120 quid a month just on fuel & insurance! i know that's only 30 quid a week but when you live by yourself thats a canny bit! think i need to get married or co-habit with a female, the sacrifices i'm willing to make for this car!

Been there, got the t-shirt. A few times.

I've had a Corrado 16v, then a Saxo VTR, then a Corrado G60, then a Golf TDI then my current Corrado 16v.

Every time I ditch the Corrado I want another a year later. The Golf was supposed to be my most economical car in all my motoring.. it ended up costing me repairs upwards of around £2000 and depreciated by about £1,500 in the year or so I owned it. And it nearly NEARLY left me stranded twice (snapped clutch pedal and seizing aux belt tensioner). None of my Corrado's have ever come close to letting me down and none have ever cost that sort of money to maintain.

My opinion is that unless you can afford to buy brand new (or nearly new) and still under warranty, stick with the Rado.

I do miss the fuel economy of the old TDI though!

As do i with my old Leon, it was unbelievable how little diesel it went through.

When i had it it was under warranty, can imagine any probs after that would have been costly.

Really enjoyed the car but it had no character in comparison to a Corrado!!

Handy to know if i need any big jobs doing while im in the area.

i'll let you know how they get on & the final cost when its done. bought the parts myself so they are labour only. initial quote/price for the work is 400-500 quid. think that seems canny reasonable myself.

I've been in this situation several times now  , and am going through it again at the mo :(

Personally, If you want to get something that costs less, I'd go for something new/nearly new with warranty, or get a Honda. Seriously!

I changed my G60 for a 1995 Civic VTI with 80K on the clock. It had been really looked after, and absolutely nothing went wrong in the year or so that I owned it. Then later I changed my VR6 for a 2000 reg VTI, which had 125K on the clock. Again, absolutely nothing went wrong. My wife had a 1997 Civic Coupe for a year, and again, nothing went wrong. There are some older cars out there that won't eat your wallet. They're just not as fun as a Corrado, but a great compromise. Both my VTI's were close to G60 speed, and the 1.6 would have been close to a VR 0-60mph.

Don't sell again Andy - you have a second car if this one plays up - you can manage.

Don't be like me!

funny you should mention that but i have looked at hondas, mates got an accord & he swears by it!

why not just downgrade to a valver?

was thinking about doing that but the insurance is more or less the same & the valver i had before the vr was actually worse on petrol than the vr! think that was more to do with the way i drove it though!

Jim, you're right, but it's starting to stress me out!

TBH, I don't think there's any point in downgrading to a valver apart from purchase price. My current valver has cost me far more in maintenance than both my VR's. Then again, my last 2 valvers didn't cost much at all.
