staffs_til_i_die 0 Posted February 12, 2007 Easy... I've just bought a '95 2.0 16v and am loving it. It has absolutely no mod's, and I'm looking forward to turning it into one of the beasts that so many of you on the forum seem to drive. A few problems though... I am an absolute beginner in terms of cars (it's only my second car after owning a Vauxhall Cav!). Where do I start? I've spent HOURS searching the net for tips and ideas, and have bought a workshop manual (which isn't brilliant). The wiki you have here is good, as it contains lots of photo's and step by step advice (more please!). My gut feeling is to start by servicing it and making sure it runs smoothly before I start lowering it and sticking new rims on it. Could anyone give me some advice on what I need to do, or point me in the direction of a website or book? Cheers!

staffs_til_i_die 0 Posted February 12, 2007 Cheers fellas... One thing at a time though! The beanie and renaming I can manage. As for switching the engine??! My mrs is pressuring me to buy a more sensible diesel Focus (as we have one 2 year old and another on the way). To avoid this I have to get my valver running sweetly and looking even better. I changed the oil and filter today. What next? The fuel pump? Or is it a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it"? Do I wait till I hear noises from under the bonnet...? I'll get to that V6 one day...
The_Dude 0 Posted February 12, 2007 Don't bother unless its buzzing loudly, unless you wanna have it new for peace of minds sake. Do the fuel filter first I'd say, then the pump. More power - different cam maybe? Forced induction? Buy a Ferrari?

Jim 2 Posted February 13, 2007 My gut feeling is to start by servicing it and making sure it runs smoothly before I start lowering it and sticking new rims on it. Bingo. The problem with upgrading cars is that it inevitably begins to exploit weaknesses that you'd have never otherwise noticed. I've found that the more bits I change on mine, the more it highlights problems in other areas. One of the most rewarding things i've had done to mine has been changing a load of worn / knackered suspension and drivetrain bits. I've had new front engine mount, new wishbones, ball joints, top mounts, and rear axle bushes in recent months and it makes such a difference to the way the car drives AND handles! But if you've taken care of that stuff and want a relatively cheap and easy power upgrade for the 2.0 16v, you need to hunt out a KR (inlet I think) cam. They can be found for about £20 and come from the 1.8 16v but give the 2.0 16v a 20BHP'ish power upgrade. Upgrades like that on non-Forced Induction are not common so well worth finding one and getting it fitted. Having owned a 2.0 16v with and without that upgrade I can tell you that you WILL notice the difference :) Have you got any specific running issues with it at the minute? CazzaVR 0 Posted February 13, 2007 As Jim says, KR inlet cam is the cheapest mod and gives good results. Panel filter is worth doing. Flowing the head also gives good results on the 16v.
VEEDUBBED 0 Posted February 13, 2007 ...Or you could get bits such as turbo manifold, injectors, turbo, intercooler,KR inlet cam, exhaust etc off VEEDUBBED....
staffs_til_i_die 0 Posted February 13, 2007 Thanks for the advice. At the moment it seems to run well but yesterday a funny grating noise has developed as I'm working my way through the gears, which disappears when I get up into 5th. Also, when I turn at full lock there is a grinding sort of noise. I just want to start simple and build it up, so that when I do drop something major in to beef up the power, it doesn't explode on me! Jim - where did you get your suspension/drive train bits done? Did you do it yourself? What's a good thing to start with?
khurrado 0 Posted February 13, 2007 Flusted did a 16v tuning guide. Anyone got a link to it?

the delta force 0 Posted February 17, 2007 Do you get a grinding noise when turning or just a full lock? Doubt it will be a fluid problem. I have had my 1.8 16v for nearly three years and although it had been modded slightly I just found myself doing things as they needed doing. Although I am now looking at getting things done for the sake of it.... wheel refurb will be next...
khurrado 0 Posted February 22, 2007 staffs_til_i_die, grinding is never a good noise. Driveshaft? Bearings? Can anyone shed some light on this?
the delta force 0 Posted February 22, 2007 Possibly the bearings although you would get the grinding noise when making the slightest of turns. I see your in Kingston, I go to a good, reliable and for London pretty cheap mechanic in Hounslow. staffs_til_i_die 0 Posted February 25, 2007 Just get the grinding noise at full-lock. Will have a look at it myself, but as I'm a bit of beginner, I wanted to get a bit of an idea what I should be looking for. Also, where do I get a list of part numbers from? Is there one on-line? Thanks for the help...
vdubCorrado 0 Posted February 26, 2007 too bad i don't live across the pond... i have something that would be perfect for you haha... a USA PL 16v with oil squirters for the pistons, brand new ABA Forged crank, Scat Forged Rods, JE forged pistons 10.5:1 compression, Autotech sport cams ( 170hp N/A but she'll take 15psi for sure) tossin around the idea of selling to make one of the most powerful PG G60 engines in the states just to proove a point... no one over here thinks a G60 can make any real power (over 250hp to the wheels)
