G60 ECU Problem? God I hope someone can help!?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.... Well where to start? My G60 has been in the local garage for 8 months and now at VW in Bedford for just over a month. Problem started when car failed to start, called out AA who said it was overfuelling. Taken to local garage, who after running their own diagnostics said it was a faulty ecu. Ecu sent to Bosch on two occassions but on each time it was returned saying there was no fault with it, however car still overfueld. Got a replacement ecu from all parts, but still didnt run. Eventually, the local garage took the car to VW in Bedford who are saying that they cannot "talk" to the ecu as they dont have the right software!! Ive just got off the phone to VW UK Customer Service who are going to chase the garage up. In the meantime, does anybody recognise the problem? I have been told that you cant just by a recon ecu or swap from one car to another as they need to be reprogrammed......Ive also been told that an ecu can only be programmed once to one car? I just dont know who to believe anymore.... All I want is my pride and joy back. Any feedback would be so so so apprieciated.

Mike

Not sure you can talk to the ECU on the G60 as in VAGCOM type software.

Are you getting a spark, does the car start and run just badly?

Try looking at the ECU relay where the fuses are under the drivers tray.

...no the car doesnt run. Ive just spoken with VW Dealers where car is, hes saying because of its age (J plate) they cant talk to the ecu. They are recommending it be taken to a specialist auto electrical company... I just seem to be going round in circles, and know Im dreading the bill after so many people have tinkered with her. When the pattern ecu was put on it ran ok for a minute or so, but then started overfueling.

VAG COM will not talk to a G60 digi ECU.

However, they should be able to check all ECU inputs and outputs are functioning correctly via the ECU loom using a VAG test box 1598 and the PG engine electrical manual. Fuel quantities can be checked using a VAG measuring unit 1348/2B.

But, it is unlikely most VAG garages still have their Corrado manuals and 1598 test boxes are not that common either, I would ask them if they have either and take it from there.

Supercharged is having the same problem with his G60 and has had for about the last 3 years, despite changing a lot of bits it still overfuels and wont run well at idle.

The information about ECUs being programmed to cars is rubbish, they are looking at it from far too modern a perspective, but again getting hold of the correct type of ECU for a UK G60 may be a little bit expensive - although it does not seem to be at fault in this case.

To check the injectors are ok plug a multimeter into the end of the injector common wiring rail and measure resistance, you should get 3.7-5 Ohms. If you do not then pull the plugs off each injector in turn and measure the resistance of each individual injector - it should be 15-20 Ohms.

Another check that may be relevant is to pull the plug from the end of the injector wiring rail and plug a test lamp in, this should flicker with the igntion cranking, if it is permanantly on then the earth strap from the battery to the gearbox needs renewing/bad connection; the next step after that is the ECU change (You know its not the ECU). If the light does not come on or flicker then remove fuse 18, pull the plug from the end of the injector wiring rail, put a multimeter in there and measure volts, with the ignition being cranked it should flick up to approx. battery voltage (This last one might be hard to see but you really need the VAG 1598 test box to do this)

Hope that helps and I need to get Supercharged to do the same check on his now.

have you tried a new temp sender as had 3 genuine ones on mine that were wrong.

check resistancew across teminals on temp sender should be abot 250-300 ohms when warm or about 5000 when cold

hi. I had exactly the same problem with my corrado g60. it was seriously overfuelling. vw garage of hereford told me it was the ecu. i purchased a used ecu from a breakers, and got vw to programme it, and fit it for me. this solved the problem. it now runs fine again.

vw told me that the cause of the ecu failing was from using jump leads to start it. the jump leads put to many volts through the ecu and burn it out.

the point of my reply is that a second hand ecu will work on another car. good luck

Hi Does anyone know of a VW Mechanic or enthusiast who can test my corrado ECU within a radius of about 30 miles from Crawley / Gatwick

What symptoms do you have?
