blue95 0 Posted February 5, 2008 Can't get through to the dealers!!! :( So have a quick Q....... I need to do an oil change and I have been offered Castrol GTX high mileage engine oil (15w/40) 5 litres for £11.73 is this a good price? Just wanted to know how much the VW stuff was? Cheers

Critical_Mass 10 Posted February 5, 2008 heh i can get synta silver for £16 inc vat from my cheery local VW specialist :D That Castrol does seem cheap though.
chubbybrown 0 Posted February 5, 2008 Because my local dealers are arseholes and dont give discount, I pay £21.86 for 5 litres and a 'free' oem oil filter.
Jim Bowen 1 Posted February 5, 2008 i'm going to send a bomb to my local VW
ProdigalSon 1 Posted February 5, 2008 After my local VW dealer messed up ordering a replacement caliper last year, he gave me 5L of Synta Silver for £8! Reckon that must be cost price  More recently they've been charging around £18 with my discount... Need to work that 'guilt trip' angle again!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted February 5, 2008 Just been reading reviews for Castrol, think I'll stick with OEM LOL Castrol is a very good brand. GTX is a bit old school for old school engines. Apart from Magnatec (why would you want oil clinging to con rods?! ), they don't have any bad products. Their Edge 10W/60 is incredible stuff for VR6s. Critical_Mass 10 Posted February 5, 2008 i'm going to send a bomb to my local VW Id be careful saying that on a puplic forum  Is it the Synta gold that is the fully synthetic?
Guest Posted February 5, 2008 I used to be able to get synta silver for £6.88 5 litres  its gone up a bit now to £9  + vat of course :D if you go to a VW TPS they will sell you 25l drums or even a 250 litre drum :D it works out far cheaper if you have somewhere to store it and you service cars on the side :)

Agree it is a good brand, however Castrol seems to have earned there products a poor rep, by claiming products are synthetic when they are not: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/Beware-o ... elling.doc http://autoviews.blogspot.com/2007/11/t ... -oils.html I know this may not be true for all Castrol products etc, makes you wonder why they would want to tarnish there rep? Supercharged 2 Posted February 7, 2008 Prices change daily but currently it's £18.60 + Vat retail and you usually get a free filter etc if you ask, Trade is £9.12 + VAT Gone are the days of paying a quid a ltr at GTi Inters!
dinkus 10 Posted February 7, 2008 Duly noted for my next oil change. Do you need anything special to buy stuff from them, or can you just walk in off the street?

Rado16v 0 Posted April 3, 2008 thought i'd resurrect this thread as there's quite a saving to be made here, here’s a website for the guys in Bletchley blue95 ( :salute: ) used: http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/ And the best bit, they have stores all over the country. Called 2 places, one near where I work and one near where I live. Both quoted £18.62+vat. Just tell them that you normally pick it up for trade price £9.99+vat at the xxx branch and they will match it. Retail price is shocking!

May be cheaper than using the stealer for VAG original parts!
