Corrado Engine Q's

Recommended Posts

Hi all I have recently bought a 94 Corrado 16v and am planning on taking it to the ring this year. Having been last year I think the car will perform great. I am going in August and there are a few parts I need to buy and would really appreciate some expert advice and knowledge.

Firstly I have uprated the anti roll bars with eibach replacements and I would like to further stiffen the fron of the car with a lower and upper strut brace. Where is the best place to get these items and are there any particular makes or styles I should look at?

Secondly last year at the ring the temperatures soared and I would like to get a good oil cooler and breather to keep temps as low as possible. Is there an oil coller kit available for the 16v and where will I be able to pick one up from?

Lastly I have uprated brakes on the car and green stuff pads, I would like red stuff pads if possible, I use them on my skyline and have found them pretty good, I cant seem to find a part number for them for the corrado only part numbers for the green stuff. Do they make red stuffs for the corrado or is there a better alternative

If there is anything else I need or need to know for the trip any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Is making the front end that much stiffer not going to make the car really understeer badly.

I am not sure. The anti roll bars have made a real big difference to the handling already. I can only compare to what I have put on the skyline, I know its a completely different car and the handling caracteristics are very different. A lot of the local golf's I saw last year have bracing and I couldnt believe how fast they go round. I am not an expert by any means and would welcome any advice.

Thanks Chris

Yu can buy Mocal oil cooler kits from most specialists such as G werks and Stealth, i would leave the original water-oil cooler in place and plumbed in to help with oil cooling in traffic and with getting the car up to temperature, and fit a thermostatically controlled oil cooler plate in addition.

Have you fitted bigger disks/callipers to the car? you can fit g60 units which are larger and help with braking, redstuff pads should be available for them.

Have you fitted a rear strut brace? apparently these help more than the front ones, although as a package (front + rear) they're supposed to really help. Not sure where to buy them though.

I dont think the discs are bigger, they are vented and grooved Brembo discs.

Thanks for the heads up on the oil cooler a mocal kit should be perfect for what I am looking for.

I havent ordered a rear strut yet but will be as soon as I have found a good front.

Is there anything else I will need for the ring??

Thanks

Chris

I would say its not a problem bracing extra on the front so long as you do more on the back as well.

I will definately brace the back I have considered putting a rear cage in the car but I dont want to ruin the driveability on the road so thought the strut braces would be the next best thing

Thanks for that. I will take some spare pads with me. We are going for 5 days so I am sure the pads and brakes will take a hemmering. Engine wise is there anything else I will need?

off the top of my head i'd go with an oil cooler (as has been mentioned) service, health check, give the car a good rest between laps and make sure you have absolutly no leaks of any kind, if you leak oil/coolant on the track and cause an accident you will be charged for everything. The repairs to the track, the closing of the track, the recovery of the cars/bikes involved and their repairs and as most insurance companies don't cover the ring it gets very expensive. Have a real good look through that website and it will tell you all you need to know. there is a forum there too full of regulars that are nice and helpful.

I know how expernsive it can get, Last year we got talking to a guy who had a big off on the ring and his bill was astronomical!!!

Have had a look on stealth and G-Werks still cant find any braces listed. What are the best handling options for the Corrado?

other people here know far more than me about suspension, but i suppose new bushes front and rear (poly on the front only is recommended) new top mounts and koni ta shocks and H&R springs are also recommended on here. personally i have poly bushes all around and weitec coilovers and it sticks like glue. no strut braces but i'd go for a rear first and front if i really think it needed it.

Sounds good, I have the suspension side sorted and I have some nice wide borbet wheels with good tyres. I will order the rear brace first I think then go from there.

When I went last year my pals VR broke down as the radiator hose split.

Make sure all your hoses don't have any cracks in them, maybe bring a few spare if you can.

Enjoy they trip...................love the Nurburgring :notworthy:

Thats not a bad shout, do you think getting a samco hose kit is advisable? or are the standard hoses up to the job. we were lucky with the weather last year and the temperature was in the high 30's!!

Std hoses are absolutely fine, it's just that they get old and perished.

Yes, standard hoses are absolutely fine - but if you are replacing more than two or three original hoses (due to perishing/cracking) then a silicon hose kit may be cheaper - at least it was last time I checked!

After finding three bad hoses, I replaced the lot, figuring that they were all the same age and all on their last legs
