mlyon89 0 Posted September 1, 2009 Hi. I was driving home last night and the old beast just died. It did a slight misfire then a few hundreds yards futher it just stopped taking throttle and came to a stop! Now it wont start it just judders like hell when i try to start it. as if all of a sudden the timings out or something?!? :? Any body got any ideas/advice on where to start? Its had a new coilpack and leads just 1000 or so miles ago. Hope somebody can help me in anyway on this one! Cheers Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

mattnorgrove 0 Posted September 1, 2009 Sounds exactly the same as when the fuel pump gave up on mine. Try the fuel pump relay first (you'll be able to find the number of the relay from a quick search). Could be a multitude of other things though. VAGCOM might also help you diagnose the problem. mlyon89 0 Posted September 8, 2009 Well i Plugged the beast into My dads Ethios Snap On code reader and it came Back saying its the Engine speed sensor that has packed in so got a price from VW And its 83 quid plus the vat which aint to bad i suppose. But i was Wondering if any1 Knew if it came under another name? As in like the crank sensor?! would be the same thing or not because theres plenty of them forsale on ebay and their a good 30-40 quid cheaper.!! Mawrick 0 Posted September 8, 2009 I would check out other things first, as the engine speed sensor will throw errors if the car isn't running.....:) And it's not a crank sensor, it is called the engine speed sensor and it's located near the oil-filter area on front of the engine...;) Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
andy 0 Posted September 8, 2009 Just check the obvious things, sparking at the plug and fuel arriving from the tank. Ditto what Mawrick said about the engine speed sensor, ignore it for the time being. Once you've confirmed ignition and fuel, maybe try a compression test. fla 9 Posted September 8, 2009 do the easy & cheap stuff first, like relays and cleanng contacts, checking leads are connected and that you are getting fuel. Check the ecu relay 109. mlyon89 0 Posted September 9, 2009 Arite ok cheers guys i wont jump in feet first to the speed sensor fault code then! Its not firing at all. Turning over no bother fitted a new starter not long ago u see!lol! It also threw up another fault code which would maybe explain my previous problem. 00518 Throttle position Sensor G69 Short with ground intermittent The problem before was it would rev and pull like a train fine throughout one gear and then as soon as you changed gear and let the clutch out and throttled again it would misfire/kangeroo as bad as it felt like it would rip an engine mount!! But if u backed off and waited for a second or two then gently eased on the accelerator it would be fine again. After this started happing i gave my throttle body a clean with carb cleaner and the inlet pipe aswell etc. This seem to cure it for a while then it started doing it again but very rarely....... then it just died about a month after as i already said. Hope this can help with you guys giving me more ideas. im offshore at the moment so cant investigate further. mlyon89 0 Posted October 4, 2009 New Update on the Situation! It was a fuel pump that was the problem. I removed the small allen headed screw out of the injector rail and turned it over and there was no fuel present. Then check the fuel pump relay was working by removing the cover and checking it. worked fine. then i checked that there was power going to the pump Which there was so no broken wires! :) Removed the fuel pump and checked by connecting to a battery. only buzzed three times then didnt work again. Straight onto ebay got a new one complete and delivered for £65. New one from VW Trade price = £108! So a good saving there! mlyon89 0 Posted October 8, 2009 Yeah Your right there! Got more things to fix yet though! 1 thing after another with this thing!lol! Center exhaust heat shield has fallen dwn on top of the exhaust(not like its a big problem :lol:) drivers wishbone bush is knackered and theres something not right with my strut top mounts after fitting cheap raceland coilovers or watever the hell their called! Theres serious up and down play when you jack it up. checked my mates corrado which is also on coilovers but their Weitec ones and theres no play in his wat so ever so i'll have to look into that when am doin the bushes at the front! Got a set of freshly refurbed audi A3 wheels to go on aswell as a new set of samco's new 6 branch exhaust manifold so im guna be a busy bunny like! :) Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
craigowl 0 Posted December 15, 2009 The nightmare happened - conked out in the most congested bit of our High Street! :bad-words: People held up behind were tooting after 10 seconds - tw@ts!! Good thing was Britannia Rescue got there in 40 minutes. The guy (top man) diagnosed fuel pump after we turned over engine and no fuel came out of appropriate pipe. Taken on trailer to VAG specialist only about a mile away, where diagnosis was confirmed. Pride myself on hardly ever having breakdowns as I look over our cars a lot. With hindsight, I should have replaced this 14-year old component some time ago. It can let you down when you least need it. Could be a threat to you and yours' life and limb if, say, it happened on a windy rainy night on a tricky, busy fast road. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
