Dan_Storm 0 Posted February 2, 2013 Sorry to dig up an old thread but has anyone else tried this? I'm in need of a new coilpack and I'm tempted to try the Saab coilpack as I don't seem to have much luck with the VW/Beru ones. Is there much of an improvement in engine smoothness/responsiveness? Jim Bowen 1 Posted January 16, 2014 My beru one that I always tell everyone is fine and has been for years broke the other week. Typical.
P3rks 11 Posted February 11, 2014 Just did this on my car and all I can say is, wow. It's smoother, sounds better (engine sounds like its gowling) and it pulls so much harder, especially at the top of the rev range. 100% recommend.
Jim Bowen 1 Posted February 17, 2014 Do i buy this? http://www.carsparkplugs.com/1x-0221503002-bosch-ignition-coil.html#.UwHgNPl_tik Then can i use my old Beru ICM part, think i have two. Or would i be better off finding something else for that job? Not sure i fancy the beru stuff. Also what is that bit of wiring with the four wires and a plug on it from? J.C 10 Posted February 17, 2014 I just fitted a Ford coilpack from a Couger (£15 ebay) works great, hasn't cured my lumpy idle but noticbly more top end plus more oomph with a light foot, I'm very happy all the info is here http://www.roflwagens.com/showthread.php?8271-12v-VR6-Ford-coilpack-swap-%28MK4-MK3%
science 0 Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) Do i buy this? http://www.carsparkplugs.com/1x-0221503002-bosch-ignition-coil.html#.UwHgNPl_tik Yeah if you want to buy new. The coil pack is solid compared to the fragile VR6 ones. Its commonly the plastic bits that fail and that bit goes in the bin with this mod. IMHO, use the Beru stuff but, you will need spade connectors and a longer pigtail, your terminals will be on the top. Also what is that bit of wiring with the four wires and a plug on it from? The pigtail is from an audi, connects to an ignition igniter control unit, 4A0905351, also see post #14. Found some useful info for those trying this from the used approach. J.C 10 Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) Wiring needed from ICM to Coilpack I think this is wrong, I've just fitted one to my 24V engine and followed this diagram, although my connector is at the top, I wired it up with the 12v to the pin furthest away from the blue sticker, the 3 remaining contacts are just controlling the corresponding pair of coils, 1&6, 3&4, 2&5. anyway started her up and splutered and popped, did some checking with the meter and found that the connector NEAREST the blue label is 12V supply, I ended up moving the all 1 place along, fired up no problem. So to sumerise, when you fit one with the connector on top, Just connect them to the corresponding terminals, far left ICU to far left coilpack middle left ICU to middle left coilpack middle right ICU to middle right coilpack far right ICU to far right coilpack IGNORE THE NEW COILPACK CYLINDER NUMBERS Edited April 24, 2014 by J.C
J.C 10 Posted April 24, 2014 Also, cheapest place to buy these (except the ebay seller who accepted my "offer" of £50, then sent me the wrong one, then couldn't find the proper one and refunded my money!!!)is http://www.vauxhallworldparts.com/vauxhall.php?partnumber=0221503002 Can't comment on performance yet as I cleaned my MAF a bit too much and cleaned it to brokeness

J.C 10 Posted April 25, 2014 No worries Science, yeah mines the ****ty Beru one, interesting that it's "Operating temperature range at outer core -20 to 120°C" gets quite hot in a vr6 engine bay and being bolted to the engine, I've ordered some phenolic washers to stand it off the engine by 7mm http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141263556397?var=440371780463&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 I might think about slimming down the heat sink as the ignition leads are tight (short) even without the spacers

Still no problem fitting the leads, maybe they are a different make/length.

J.C 10 Posted April 25, 2014 Yeah I saw a thread with that spacer featured and someone mentioned phenolic washers, they arrived today, not great quality but I'll fettle them, I'm running a 24 valve and there is less slack on the leads Good idea, I'm using one of these; http://www.verdictmotorsports.com/Volkswagen_12v_VR6_Coil_Insulator_Saver_low_temp_p/0137.htm You can see it's the brown plate in the picture above. science 0 Posted April 26, 2014 I'm running a 24 valve and there is less slack on the leads I think the distributer version of the leads are longer. Check this thread; http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?t=64245
