L Plates and 6 Points, Insurance? as if!

Recommended Posts

so this is how it all started for me,

:*

i passed my test

started off driving with a 1.1 metro

then bumped up to 1.8 Escort GTI

then discovered a Corrado 2.0 - :D

2 weeks after bribing my mate to sell it to me some git decided they would give me a hand in writing it off. so back to the escort - :(

"oops was that a camera?" - 3 Points

and then the week before having my licence 2years "oops, was that another camera?" - 3points "NOOOOoooooo........"

back to a provisional licence with 6 points

then i see a Corrado VR6 for sale and cant not buy it, as Corrado's are so frikkin cool - :D

start looking at the insurance ....£4200.00 on average.

so eventually i found a policy that will charge me £3700ish and pay it monthly and its only got a £50 cancellation fee just so i can keep it on the road, at least untill i get my full licence back (test date Mid October)

I could realy do with something a bit cheaper so i ask,

has anyone got themselves stupidly in to a similar position or have any idea on what i can do?

Best advice I can possibly give, start your driving life in a slow car and lump it. My first car was a 1.3 8v suzuki swift, I still own it but now in GTI form and its a little pocket rocket for a 17 year old. If your into cars and just passed your test theres no doubt you'll end up with a heavy right foot at some point, and people can argue all they want that they drove sensibly but there will always be that 'occasion' when some kid in a corsa etc cut them up and they just HAD to give him a race.

My little swift did brilliant mpg, it was fun to drive, started up first time everytime, insurance was a bit daft (£1200 first year) but I had the usual exhaust, alloys and lowering springs. It would barely go past 100mph but was fast off the line and thats all I needed. I still have a clean license *touch wood* and had a load of fun, I now own a VR6 and consider myself quite a sensible driver, got my daft years over in a slow car without paying stupid money on insurance.

My first car was a 1.3 8v suzuki.

Now on the list of potential first cars for my daughter along with Fox, Lupo, Polo, or a low power / older Golf.

She doesn't quite grasp the fact she is going nowhere near my VR6 or the R32! My first car was a burgundy Polo (EUD 69V) that was less than a litre engine if I recall - was SOOOOOO long ago now - but it was mine and it was great (until I ran into the back of a 5 series).

(and now we know where your forum name came from)

4200, wow I could have insurance on 22 years for that money.

Good advise, don't bother with cars over 1,2l or put a brick under your accelerator pedal.

VR6Pete - Im 24 ,

i figure that if i can manage to lighly stroke the accelerator for the next couple of months and keep my lead foot at bay i'l be alright cos 3 points drop off in November, by then i should have lost the L plates again too,

ive waited too long to settle for any thing less so getting a little 1.1 or 1.2 motor just aint going to cut it.

I will Just have to Lump it for now i guess, if i want the car i just have to pay the price. and one hell of a price it is

Up to you if you can afford the insurance. Factor in running costs though, and be prepared for when things break!

So what should I really be expecting to become an extra cost with a VR6 thats done 175k+ because I haven't really thought about haveing to fork out any more on it for a while.

I have just enough funds to cope with the insurance and general maitanance, just not too sure about what to expect if and when something breaks :s

If i were you id be patient and wait a year or two, i waited 10 years to get a vr6 and what i have is 12 years of driving experience (and still learning) insurance that is is less than a 10th of your quote.

If you wait you will have cheaper insurance and in two years thats £7400 you will have paid on insurance which to me is £7400 you could spend on a bloody nice car, granted if you get something cheaper you will have to be paying for that.

With regards to maintenance a 175k+ plus car is going to have issues unless well maintained,i had a gear box die on me, second hand box new clutch and fitting was around £500 it can happen to any car but these cost quite often come out of the blue.

Not trying to put you off buying a vr, but one thing i know about cars is don't over stretch they have a habit of biting you in the arse, have a think plan what your going to do and what you can afford.

Ahhh bless, youthful innocence. Not sure if your innocence is heart warming or worrying though. Let's have some pictures either way.

My first car was a Nova which i sold 10 days after passing my test, got a corsa 1.4SRI, sold that after 11 months and bought my first VR6 when I had just turned 19 :-) not cheap, but that was nearly 10 years ago, insurance is a different ball game now.

at 175k if the chains havn't been done that will be the main cost and it isn't cheap to get it done! At £4700 for insurance, I'd run a mini for a year if I had to to avoid that. Bear in mind if you ran the slowest car possible for a year with insurance at say £1000, you could get the chains done, get the engine rebuilt and probably have change for a supercharger/turbo! Out of interest how many no claims have you got? I'm 24 with 7 years no claims and im paying less than £700.

I got No no claims. I got a few weeks at stupidly high insurance then ill cancel it once ive re-passed my test and pick up a cheaper one ,ive now found a few insurers offering 1400 -1800 once i lose the L's , if i keep searching i might get it down to 1k from some obscure insurance provider..wich i think is not bad all things considered.

Is it easy to cancel insurance mid term (i.e. after the cooling off period)? Curious! And are you going to do your test in the rado? :norty:

I can cancel the insurance for a fee from what I just had to double check on its going to cost me between £27 and £150 to do it.

I have been really tempted to use the corrado to do the test in, but I figured it might be worth popping down the test center in the car before hand and have a word with a couple of the test guys about the suitability of the car for the test. I cant help but think that the guys wouldent be able to cope with it,

that and im sure the guys down there all seem to be quite old and quite large, I wonder if they can actually get down in to my car. :s

Best advice is, don't do the the test in the c,if anything, park her up,work on her slowly restoring and making her mint..buy a polo for £500 and get some no claims...wait a year or 2 and you'll be fine.I'm 27 and pay £170 fully comp under classic car policy.

Thanks all for the advice to get a cheap lil motor to use for now. It's a good idea but its not going to happen.

My minds made up on that one and thats to have and use the rado as a daily motor, what ever the cost (although I am doing everything I can to keep the insurance down).i am already looking for another to have as a project car but that's for another thred

Hi Mate, firstly good luck on getting back on the road.

I have a 1990 1.8 16V, which i love to bits. An insurance policy on my name as a new driver aged 26 with no NCB was a whopping £3,900.! I actually already had the car before even thinking about insurance. When i passed just over a week ago, i was calling round for insurance. Luckily for me, and the nice parents that i have, they sold thier third car and had a policy with 5 years NCB which they no longer needed. When i bought my car, i put this in my mums name, and took out a policy with Halifax with me as a named driver which set me back £750, happy days.

If you can, try and do the same, got a policy out in your parents name. Most insurance companies are cutting down on this as they have caught up with it, not the best thing to do but im legally insured to drive.

So if you get 6 points in your first 2 years, you have to go back to a provisional and re-do your test?! Blimey things have changed!

My first car was an Austin Allegro 1.3 which had a measly 54hp and a light dusting of torque to match. I used to get up to far more stupidity, pranks and dangerous driving in that than I have ever done in my 20s and 30s. We all hate insurance companies and we all like to think we're different from the next person, but their trend analysis is c0ck on and they were right to charge me £1300 TPFT on an Allegro because I drove like a tw@t!

I remember kids my age in 1990 passing their tests, getting bank loans to cover the £5000 insurance (TPFT!) for their Escort RS Turbos and then duly wrapping them around a tree the same night. £5K for the car, £5K for the insurance, to paid back over 5 years and nothing to show for it. It's really, really not worth it.

Buy the VR6, spend the money you would have wasted on insuring it on doing it up instead and in the meantime drive round in an old beater and build up some no claims and insurance maturity....

i passed the test yesterday (and i did it in the Corrado too) and finally got rid of those L plates that wernt doing my rado any justice. "yay"

went to tell my insurers that i passed (insured with the halifax btw) they said i can but it will cost me just over £900 to change the licence to a full one.

so i asked to cancil the policy they said yeah thats fine that will cost you £35, 10 mins later in the call thire telling me that its actually going to cost me £595 just to cancel the policy.

Bastuards!

i went out and got another quote from the kwik-fit platinum insurers they quoted me £2200 fully comp with break deown cover and loads of extras thrown in, "Awesome"

so now i got my full licence back and i can afford my insurance.

ALSO

last night i hit a fox, when he went under i lost all power, turns out he managed to snap my fuel line just before the filter, started ****ing out petrol every where. so thank god i had that the break down cover :D

If I had to pay more than 600 quid for standard corrado I would drive a bus, sorry. Basically I will not pay more than 1k on insurance for any car till I start earning more than 50k a year.
