Mk3 ABS System

I've got the complete mk3 ABS system i'm thinking of fitting to my C as part of the rebuild. The only differences I see are that the Servo's have different attachment methods, I can go ahead and make the MK3 servo fit, but I don't want to fight the old servo out (it's a pig with a 24v in the way!).

 

Question is simple, can I fit the mk3 master cylinder to the Corrado (VR6) servo? What are the pro's and cons of doing this?

 

​The rest of the fit doesn't bother me too much and I need to replace the front rear brake lines anyway so that's not a problem. I have searched the forum but nothing concrete comes up.

But yeah, shouldn't be an issue to use the Corrado servo in place of the mk3 one, with the mk3 master cylinder as long as the mounting is the same however you'll need to blank off the port for the ABS pedal position sensor as that is no longer required.

 

I'm only speculating on that thought because I've fitted (and am using again) the system from a B4 Passat rather than a mk3 Golf so I can't be 100% sure on the master cylinder mounting to the Corrado servo.

The Corrado Servo / MC has a 45 degree bolt axis IIRC and the MK3 has the more normal horizontal axis, so not sure it would work.

Kev is right, I took it apart this afternoon to have a gander and was met with said 45' angle.

 

I got over it by popping some man pills and swapped the servo over and ran a die down the mk3 pedal attachment to allow the stock corrado attachment to the pedal to work.

 

I've now removed the mechanical side of the abs system and now need to figure out how to mount the mk3 pump. Any ideas?

 

As a side note, ill be selling on my fully functional abs system later this evening if anybody is after parts.

Just did this in mine.

 

I ended up welding the Golf ABS bracket to the Corrado bracket as a simple fix.

 

Any questions shoot away.

Nice one mate! I don't have easy access to a welder so will have to try and find another way for now!

Yeah, I had easy access to a welder so I simply cut the original Corrado bracket so I retained the three studs and welded it to the back of the Golf bracket. Alternatively I couldn't see why a decent nut and bolt arrangement and cutting three well positioned holes in the golf bracket not working? That was my back up plan.

 

Just to confirm its a late mk3 VR6 ABS system right? Teves20?

 

As for tips:

 

*You need a late Passat B4 ABS light and ABS light loom (single loom going from ABS light to position X in fusebox - Plug and Play). The Corrado one will not work correctly - The lights always on and dimly at that - there is no way to reverse it. The Golf one works but is too big to fit in the Corrado Dash and the circuit board is too wide to make it fit. The Passats light is the same size as the Corrado's so you can simply swap the fascia's so it looks original. Look for the ABS/Airbag duel light and it HAS to have the double suffix after the part number such as "AB" - The single suffix (such as "A") works the same way as the Corrado light.

*You can use a Passat Servo, ABS or non-ABS with the Golf M/C. Which I would recommend so you can remove the need for the position sensor.

*You can retain your original front speed sensors and the Golf loom plugs right in.

*You need either 6n2, late Passat B4 or late MK3 golf rear sensors. I used MK3 golf, although I had to extend the wiring some what; But I feel that was my error for routing the ABS loom within the car.

 

Wiring:

 

grey/white (Pin 16) - Goes to fusebox plug W2 which I believe is for the ABS warning light.

grey/white (Pin 13) - Is the diagnostic connector which goes to the diagnostic block behind the centre console.

black/red (Pin 12) - Goes to fusebox plug W4 which is connected to the brake light switch - There is also a same coloured wire coming out at the W4 connection going to a single female terminal which you also connect if you have it - That'll connect to a single terminal at the fusebox which is a brake light feed (i.e. live when the brake lights are on) - it's a grey or green terminal (different colours to the Golf loom anyway).

black/yellow (Pin 23) - This goes to fusebox plug D7 (via a single terminal I believe) which is an ignition live.

 

Connected to the W plug is a blue/white wire (W1) which is a VSS feed and plugs into the VSS block.

 

As far as I'm aware it's plug and play, no real messing about other than tidying up. Thinking about it I may have spliced the black/yellow wire because on the Corrado it's a solid wire and on the Golfs loom it's a terminal, or vise-versa. Simple enough.

 

And thats it. Simple as that.

 

Oh, don't forget to remove your rear brake compensator. The Teves20 system works the rear pressure within the pump/ecu.

Cheers mate, I've got a full TEVES 20 system that I bought from Kevin Bacon a few months ago. I've already fitted the mk3 servo, I just ran a die down the servo shaft to allow the Corrado fork arrangement to fit properly. I don't have a ABS light though, I'll go on the hunt for one!

 

The wiring looks simple enough which is a nice change after fitting the 24v lump!

 

The front/rear brake lines are corroded through and I was in the process of replacing them when I decided to just bite the bullet and fit the mk3 system I had in the garage. The valve has long since been removed! This on top of the 288 brake and full braided lines means that the entire braking system will be replaced!

I did exactly the same. MK4 GTi 288's up front, MK4 estate rears (larger piston), braided hoses and then the Teves20. It just feels better and has better bite.

 

You can use the Golf ABS light to make sure everything works as it should for the time being, it'll throw up codes without the light.

 

Just make sure the Passat light and loom is from a late B4 with the double suffix part number (single suffix is the early part) - I went through three until I got the right one. They are hard to get hold of. I contacted so many people breaking Passats with no luck, then "Zed." on UKPassats posted me one for free! What a hero!

I don't even have the Golf light at the moment! I'll just keep an eye out! There was a loom a few minutes ago on ebay, but it seems to have disappeared already!

The loom has to be from a Passat too; they are different to the Golfs. Just a heads up.

 

You're best off looking for a Passat breaker.

Sean - think your questions in the PM to me have been answered! Only just got home to view your message.

 

I'm going to start fitting the system to my VR6 tomorrow however I have obtained all of the parts from a B4 Passat so won't be able to advise much on the mk3 Golf incompatibilities although it sounds like EnthusiastOwned has covered it all anyway :-)

I have received the late passat loom and plugged it in, does anyone know where the male black/red feed that is separate from the green x plug goes? I've tried looking for a late B4 wiring diagram and they don't seem to exist for some reason!

 

One end of the black/red wire is on the 6 pin connecter that goes into the back of the abs light assembly and the other end is separated on its own male plug. I'm not sure if its a constant feed or a brake light feed? The rest of the abs loom is plugged in and working and I can scan it with VCDS and all is well, It's just this abs light and loom that I need to crack!

Sean it's a brake light feed. There should be a black/red wire with a grey male connector somewhere in the loom behind the fusebox which will plug straight into it. If not then just splice into the brake light switch wiring itself.

As above.

 

On my loom it was a duplicate feed. The black/red wire went into W plug then a second wire came from the same plug location with a single terminal on it.

 

I purely checked for a brake light live feed using a multi-metre on all the loose single terminals behind the fusebox.

Ah thanks guys, I thought it would be. There is a spare plug for a brake light feed coming from the 'f' or 'g1' plug I think from memory! Handily for me, I thought this might be the answer and left it accessible when I was tidying up the fuse box wiring last week.

Next question, does anyone know what the circuit in the b4 light looks like? I may just make the circuit board up myself!

Thinking of doing this conversion as I am having a load of grief getting my C back on the road after nearly 2 years of been stood. ABS light comes on at about 15mph and stays on. Have changed sensors numerous times, no sensor codes coming up on VAG-COM. Just the one outlet valve out of specification code.

 

So just a few quick questions:

 

Does the donor B4 Passat have to be a specific model or can it be any model,engine size etc.?

Does this delete the ABS ECU in the passenger footwell?

Is the majority of the wiring plug straight into the fuseboard?

I used the mk3 setup in mine, just cut the ball of the servo where it connects to the pedal and run a die down the remaining shaft and transfer the fork across from the Corrado setup to connect up to the brake pedal.

 

I'm not sure how the passat setup connects to the pedal.
