Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 20, 2014 And a boring 5 door one at that. I don't care how few miles it has. It's still just a boring MK3 Golf that handles like a shed riding a space hopper, and
Jim 2 Posted January 20, 2014 Heheh.. though must say I never got the hatred that some people have for five doors. The car is the same as the 3 door, just.. more practical. Is a 3 door chassis more rigid?
bristolbaron 10 Posted January 20, 2014 quite the opposite jim, a 5 door chassis is stronger, due to the B pillar. [delta intergrales were only 5 dr for this reason] 3 door just looks so much better from the side on pretty much everything. I was going to buy the mrs a mk3 ibiza but couldnt bring myself to buy one in 5 door form - so ugly!
Jim 2 Posted January 20, 2014 It's a weird thing - I never even notice whether a car is 3 or 5 door most times.
Portent 0 Posted January 20, 2014 The interior of that takes me right back to 1998 when I bought an R reg Golf mk3 Highline. That was such a nice car. Personally I like 5 door golfs as the whole point if a golf is practicality and a little performance in GTI or VR6 guise. Apart from the mk1 and mk2 the three doors always look odd to me. Maybe I'm just weird.
jamie_300 0 Posted January 20, 2014 I've always had 5 door every day cars, then weekend cars have been three doors! whats the point in standing out in the rain while everyone else is getting comfortable! Looking at ST170's now to replace my current daily 1.6 Focus, luckily the only low mileage ones seem to be 5 door :)

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 20, 2014 Yeah 5 doors are stronger but not by a huge amount. The stiffest VWs are the 5 door saloons, hence the Jetta / Vento / Bora race cars :) You've got the reinforced B pillar as Bristol says, plus a nice big peice of steel bracing the rear turrets. 3 door hatchbacks are a soggy blancmange compared to a 5 door saloon. To be fair, only a small percentage of people would actually notice the difference during normal driving, but throw both hard into a tight bend, the 5 door will feel structurally better. jamie_300 0 Posted January 20, 2014 I have noticed as well that if you blackened the B pillar and colour code the door handles you don't notice it as much!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 20, 2014 Alfa mastered the 5 door coupe look with hidden rear handles!
Yandards 0 Posted January 20, 2014 Sadly this looks like another case of someone buying a car sat in a garage on the cheap and then sticking it on eBay for small fortune, its obviously not currently garages so can't have been sat outside long. Sorry for getting back on topic!!
C5 OEM 0 Posted January 20, 2014 this is nice, shame its an auto but look at the leather.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-2-8-VR6-Highline-3dr-Auto-/231112283665?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item35cf5d9611

coullstar 0 Posted January 21, 2014 Yeah I dont get it to be honest, especially not at that price. Its good to have nice expamles of older cars around but on the whole on something exotic or rare, A Mk3 VR6 is not rare.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 21, 2014 I think Yan makes a good point. The seller seems to think he has a 2670 mile MK1 GTI or a MK1 Escort or something. Sure it's a time warp car, but there are certain periods in history that aren't worth time travelling back to!
Jim Bowen 1 Posted January 21, 2014 Indeed you would be better off buying a mk4 tdi
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 21, 2014 I would prefer a MK4 TDI. It's faster :)
Yandards 0 Posted January 21, 2014 I would prefer a MK4 TDI. It's faster :) And has more torque..
