3/8 torque wrench much use?

Recommended Posts

As per the subject, do people find they use a 3/8 torque wrench much on their Corrado?

I have a 1/2 and a 1/4 one, but I havent done a job that used a 3/8 yet.

Although the net seems to think a 3/8 torque wrench is the most used on cars...generally.

i guess it depends on the sockets you have most of, or use mostly. I use the 3/8 mostly, but 1/2" for bumper bolts etc

I only ever use the 3/8 wrench apart from piddly little stuff and big sub frame type stuff that requires the use of the 1/2 torque wrench. Nice and sturdy! 1/4 stuff breaks too easily when working on old or under maintained cars!

I use 1/2" for wheel bolts, chassis bolts, head bolts and general big stuff.

I use 3/8" for spark plugs and most fasteners on and around the engine.

I have yet to find a need for a 1/4" torque wrench! Really low torques like 10-15nm I generally do by feel. No issues to date :)

Do you actually mean torque wrench or are you talking about ratchets?

Has there ever been a situation where 1/2 or 1/4 wouldn't do the job?

99% of the time I use 1/4 or 1/2 ratchets, I have a small 3/8s set on standby should access be tight, I only use a short low range 1/2 torque wrench, sometimes with a reducer to downsize to 1/4.

1/4" is useful where a torque is specified in in/lb or cm/kg (or what ever the metric equiv' is) but in my experience there are VERY few bolts torqued to such a low figure on VWs.
