VR6 Engine Rebuilds

I've got a 93 VR6 with 107K on the clock. The engine smokes a bit and plug number 6 tends to oil up over time. I was told by one of the specialists that the engine is ok, but that I should consider a full rebuild, 'cos by the time you have taken the engine to bits to check it over, you may as well replace any items that would otherwise need replacing in time.

 

Anyone got any thoughts? Anyone had this done before? How many banks will I need to rob?

 

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Go to Stealth for their complete head rebuild/timing chains/tensioners/clutch package @ £1300. You can get it done cheaper but may not get the job done properly, as I'm just finding out!!!

My 92 VR6 oils up on plugs 1 and 6 after about 5000 miles on the same plugs, it's done 120k but very rarely smokes and I have been recomended a head rebuild by Stealth by other forum members.

 

But like I said in previous posts, the car runs fine and does everything it should, performance and mpg wise, so I'm not really into spending loads of cash at the moment till it gets worse.

Probably worth doing something if your oil consumption is getting significant, or you're a bit @n@l about your car, but otherwise, wait for the headgasket to blow or the timing chains to rattle. That'll be your prompt for starting expensive work...

Hey, how about I wade in with "bloody corrados are so damned expensive to maintain, if only VW weren't so rubbish", and Kev rounds off with "buy some VT engine mounts they're really really good".

We're all getting typecast here... :)

I didn't spend that getting mine done, but I'm paying the price now, with more problems to sort. All in I think I've spent about £800, but I have used genuine VAG parts & I got a new recon head aswell rather than getting mine fettled, so I should get a bit of cash back on that.

VT mounts are rubbish. The squishy OE rubber is the best there is, VW designed them that way for a reason and I'm loathe to fork out so much for VT, especially as they transmit too much noise into the cabin.

Now I come to think about it, VWs are fantastic. Really reliable cars! Cheap to run and maintain too!

And the quality of service from the dealerships is second to none! ;)

and I love whate wall tyres and 2 tone paint.

 

I think I'll take my 24 year old derby to the main dealers for a full service..........

Mine has been a near complete rebuild included oversized pistons, rebore, all new bearings, oil pump, timing chains / tensioners, lifters, guides plus all the seals / gaskets etc. Other things cropped up as it went on though like the belt tensioner, blowing downpipe replaced, alternator, crank position sensor, ECU, oil cooler kit. Must be more but can't remember now. :?

 

Mine needed the lot. Off the point abit but it turned out the inlet manifolds had been ported and the ECU chip wasn't standard although the soldering looked very original. :| My engine is also a '94 in a '93 car. It's been played with and treated badly by the looks of it. When I bought it though it was dyno'd at 194bhp and no signs of smoke. Within about 4 months it was smoking / plugs 1 and 6 were getting fouled, getting through 1 litre of oil per 1000 mls and understandably running like sh*t. :(

 

Originally thought the burning oil was the guides / seals (done 80k by the way :| ). If that's all your problem is then probably worth doing with the timing chains and tensioners. Roughly think that would come to £600 for the bits and the machining work for the head if you fit it yourself.

 

If I ever get round to it I'll list exactly what the whole lot cost, but overall it must be near £5000.00. Probably can be done alot cheaper but then you get into the, 'well, if you're doing that you may aswell do this', which makes sense but things can get out of control.

 

I think for this sort of money I could have got a ready done lump for a lot less than this, and then done the swap. Well worth looking at the options, and I'll add a few grand into the equation next time for hassle.. 6months off the road so far..

Rpmayne, you have my sympathy! I think I got off lightly with mine at about £800. Thankfully the bottom end was ok.
