Nugget 1.8T

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, after a few years off from owning a Corrado, I decided to buy this '91 1.8T that I found on Pistonheads. The interior wasn't in great shape and the Bilstein coilovers had seen better days. The engine conversion was carried out by Voodoo Motorsport and is running DTA standalone ecu and K04 turbo.

Stripped the car and bought a late spec interior from a friend, who turned out to have my Corrado about 10 years ago.

Didn't really like the rear lights, so went for a set of full reds.

Had a subframe and cross member lying around from a previous Corrado and had it shot blasted and painted black. New ball joints, wishbones, discs etc installed. The car came with Audi S2 front calipers and I fitted a set of HEL braided brake lines.

Full Vibratechnics engine mounts, wishbones and rear trailing arm bushes used, along with Powerflex for the cross member.

Heat wrapped the K04 downpipe and bought a few Forge goodies - DV008, turbo inlet pipe, EGR blankig cover and carbon engine cover. Also installed Lupo front wipers.

To help the suspension, bought Wiechers carbon fibre front & rear strut braces, along with the front lower brace.

The Bilstein coilovers had seized solid and couldn't adjust the height, so a set of KW Automotive Clubsports coilovers with adjustable top mounts were installed.

8x17" Calibre Vintage with 205/40/17 Kumho V70 track tyres to finish it off. ET30 front and ET25 rear.

I do car detailing when I can and gave the Corrado a 3 stage machine polish, topped off with Auto Finesse Illusion wax

After doing a few track days at Silverstone and Bedford Autodrome, I managed to strip 3rd gear of some of its teeth

I can highly recommend Abbey Transmission Services in Nazing. The gearbox was fully rebuilt with new diesel gears, Peloquin limited slip diff and uprated clutch fork

Wanted to make the most of the new refurb gearbox, so bought a GEMA short shifter and will be installing the Gruven short shift for reduced side to side.

My rear number plate holder was broken, so the Corrado got treated to a carbon one from LWS Design

On the way to the ferry for DMPD 2015, I managed to get put a rather large hole in my Forge sump by catching a speed bump.

Thankfully one of the guys at Auto Finesse had a sump on one of his cars at home and with minutes to spare we made he ferry.

Thanks for the comments guys, she's a labour of love!

rado20vT what intercooler do you use on your 1.8T?

I was running it with a renault traffic cooler but that was very wide so I will be changing to a smaller one, something like this

Busy time working on the car recently. Unfortunately I had a issue driving 1 day, when the front near side wheel felt like it was going to fall off. A few mechanics told me the gearbox was causing the issue, which was worrying after not long having the gearbox rebuilt. After refurbishing my dirveshafts and fitting new inner and outer cv joints and doing both front wheel bearings, the issue has gone.

While the car was on axle stands in my garage, I decided to tackle a few jobs

First up, rusty fuel tank straps.

Looking a lot better after being shot blasted and then treated with a zinc coating to help stop rust.

While getting the fuel tank straps done, I had my rear caliper carries shot blasted and coated, ready for the MK4 Golf rear calipers
