Hmm... the VR6 is a bit toothless these days and I'm always pretty wary of going against hot hatches given how easy it is to remap them to over 200BHP and beyond!

 

That said I think my friend was rather disappointed - went out for a blat and he was in his Impreza WRX... and my old Corrado not only kept ahead but even started to gain some ground in a little sprint on my private road! :) I'd always heard their gearing and 4WD flattered them, but I guess beyond the traffic light grand prix, that holds some truth!

I've heard so much recently about fiesta st's being very quick. The one I destroyed without even trying too hard must have been one of the bad one's

They are very quick James for what they are, but the numbers will never lie - an R32 is 260BHP'ish? And ST's are only 197BHP, even on overboost. The chassis is *excellent* though - I think it might be a closer match on a twisty back road or a track :)

 

Not had an occasion to put a friend in my Corrado, and see how it compares to my ST side by side yet though. Must try sort that out.

The R32 is 240 standard . A remap will take then to 270 . I agree with Jim , you just don't know what's been done to these Corsas and Saxos . Most are just standard with a Halfords big boy exhaust bolted on the back box though . I've had plenty of them giving it large at the lights . I just pull away normally , it's them that looks a right plank then . However if there's a dual carriageway ahead and it's clear I will give it some , just to let them know whose boss lol . These people obviously have no idea which car is what , it's doesn't take a genius to work out what VR6 stands for . It's a bit like me trying to race an Aston Martin or something like it ,you just end up red faced !

Had similar the other day where a guy was fawning over my car and saying how gorgeous it was and how he had always wanted one - followed by how he has always loved the Scirocco haha! - oh well! at least he loved my car ("A Rose by any other name.........")! Tis funny as well as tragic lol!

I don't really entertain young boy racers as the're more hassle than the're worth and generally can't drive and take unnecessary risks. I had recently a young guy in one of those new fiat punto arbarths something or other. Right on my rear end as I cruised along in my G60. Let it go past and he still couldn't pull away from me and I remained in 5th gear on the bends while he was taking wide lines into them and really struggling to keep his fat french piece of scrap on the road. I think jealousy causes these people to do irrational things when they see a corrado.

Had one lad in a BMW series 1 get angry I had overtaken him on an fast A road, sat right on my arse at 80-90 for a couple of miles. As I slowed down as we approached traffic he spotted his chance, committed to overtake me and all the traffic into a blind bend, as he did two cars came round the corner, lots of tyre smoke and sqealing tyres as a head on was only just avoided.

Sometimes I think bhp should be restricted for younger drivers (or those with too high testosterone levels! ) like it is in bikes

Had a girl in one of those volvo c30's wind me up a while ago, decided to undertake me on a roundabout. Was the top of range one, about 230bhp and £15k, was pretty quick... But not quick enough.

Her face was not impressed as I went past her while she was flat out, I like to think she'll be kicking herself all the way through her 5 year finance deal

I must admit though when I was a lad I thought I could take on anything in my 1.1 Mk1 Golf. And pull off over takes I wouldn't even dream in the G60 nowadays. Even if i had a 400bhp subaru i'd still not attempt them lol. I remember having a go at an escort cosworth on a road I knew well in my Mk1 and although it obviously had me in the straights I still managed to get past it as we approached 3 slower moving cars. The cossie backed out of the overtake but just kept the momentum going and done him and the 3 cars in one sweep and drove off into the sunset. Well until two minutes later when we all backed up behind another row of cars. But I cruised into town in front of that cossie so job was well done in my opinion. Nowadays I just see it all as pointless and find it amusing the risks people take to shave 30 seconds of a journey.

It's not the same, but I have to say I love beating more modern high power Jap/Ford type stuff on the race track. 26 year old car, no ABS, no TC, solid rear beam, no active yaw control nonsense etc. They also spend more time with their bonnets open than closed which pleases me greatly :)

This used to be one of my favourite bits of Corrado ownership. Especially in an auto, it's only a light car and really a lot faster than they expect :lol:

 

Now I have the R32 the class of blowhards has improved slightly, but beating the "it's only a Golf" brigade is still satisfying. The last one was a short guy in a Z3 who looked very upset as I disappeared in front of him!
