Wheeler Dealers

I think there is a lot more interest than we give it credit for.... 8000 plus likes And hundreds of very positive comments. But more exposure has got to help. How can an escort mk 2 be selling for 3 or even 4+ Times what a Corrado goes for

The escorts are rally cars though aren't they? And you can't beat those old Citroens as long as they don't have rust or electrical gremlins...

Some escorts are but there is a 1.6 Harrier on eBay... Nut and bolt rebuild for over £20k Nut and bolt corrado may get near £10k but in every way is a better car

It seems any Mk1/2 Escort is worth strong money, make it 3 door and add RS/Mexico and you are sitting on a very tidy sum. Some of it may be down to rally pedigree but some of it is because they are cool, young lads who couldn't afford them at the time have them and now they are stashed away with no real need to sell = value goes up..

Exactly the same things happening with Golfs, 205s, Xr2s, 5GTTs etc.. Would be nice for the Corrado to make its way onto the list. Lots of the poor Corrados have been broken up now and i know there is a good few of us on here who would have to have offers that can't be refused for our cars..

Wheeler dealers wont do the Corrado any harm at all, I'm not expecting values to rocket but as I'm not selling or buying I'm not really bothered...

Yeah - I always regret selling my slightly untidy but mechanically sound MkII GTI 8v Golf for a song a few years back - would be worth a tidy sum now.

Typical. I'm away from home for a whole week when it's on.

Jim - do you have Virgin Media - if so you could load Virgin anywhere onto your phone or pad?

Just had an email from one of the producers to confirm the date :)

I hope this email finds you well. Just to remind you that the VW Corrado episode will premier Monday 5th October at 9pm on Discovery Channel. The show will be repeated all week up to Saturday 10th.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your kind contribution to the show.

Woohoo.

I was away last week and the place we stayed in had the benefit of Sky. I managed to catch a couple of episodes of Wheeler Dealers including the MK1 XR2 and a Porsche 911. The basic idea of the programme appears to fix up a tired example and then sell at a profit. However as far as I could tell they did not include any labour charges in their calculations, which in the case of the XR2 included extensive bodywork repairs and the removal of the engine. IMO they also undersold the cars at the end of the programme. I will be very interested to see how much they paid for their Corrado and what they spent on it. Just need to find someone with Sky!!

a good point me & the gf have often discussed Mark

if Ed put his labour on top they would always be making a huge loss, even if he did it at a discounted rate

imagine the total bill if he was charging say £50 per hour!! & that is way cheaper than many mechanics

do you have a family member or close friend who has sky m8?

they might be nice enough to lend you their SkyID - all you need to log in to sky go ;)

Mike Brewer answers this question on a near daily basis on social media, and has done for years. I think they need to include a disclaimer at the start of the show. They don't include labour as the idea is that Edd is a home mechanic. Yes, admittedly with a large workshop and a set of ramps, and yes they do occasionally have some specialist bits and pieces that they use (e.g. Teraclean) but the idea is that a lot of the work you could quite conceivably do at home. Hence no labour charges.

Some of the work I've seen people undertake on here (including full on, ground up restorations, engines out, etc etc)makes me comfortable with the premise of the show!

I understand the point you are making Jim but for most 'home mechanics' to kit out their garage with even a fraction of the tools he has & uses would cost an absolute fortune. never mind the cost of the ramp

a prime example would be the episode where he repaired a BMW front bumper due to cracks. the Wurth kit he used for the repair is over £200 just for the kit. add onto that all the filler/primer/stone guard/paint & it would have probably cost not much less for a replacement bumper

that said - I am pleased they did that episode as thanks to Goldie on here I now have an original Kamei front spoiler for the valver but it needs a repair similar to what Ed undertook. I wonder if I asked very nicely if he would lend me his Wurth kit to do my repair LOL

I think they could/should do a best of both worlds & include estimated costs for the jobs to be done if someone was paying for them - that could please all then

I don't really agree to be honest but we're both entitled to our points of view I guess :) I think you could easily take any of the jobs they do on the cars to restore them for the show, and treat them in isolation. The fact they do them all on one car is just so that they can make a TV show out of it. I'm sure you, like me, have spent substantially more than £200 on the parts or tools to do any number of jobs on your Corrado.. how much is a new, decent suspension kit for example, plus the tools to do the swap? For people doing restoration work even on something as humble as the Corrado, £200 is frankly nothing.

Part of it also showing you what CAN be achieved at home with a bit of practice and a bit of determination. They say it regularly, but if from watching them do a DIY repair on the show you're inspired to go out and work on your own car, then they've done what they set out to achieve - try and get more people enthusiastic about working on cars rather than getting put off because they're too complex or it costs too much to work on them.

They also deliberately try and show new & different types of repairs as much as possible (watch out for VAG-COM in the Corrado episode!) which is why sometimes it gets more and more elaborate or specialist as I guess there's only so many 'brake pad' level type repairs that can be shown before it gets a bit samey :)

Like most things on television, logic is absent. Remember it's a written and scripted show, not just a random car repair. If a car hasn't got anything wrong with it, or not enough to make a worthwhile episode, they make it up, create problems that wern't originally there.
