How does a knock sensor work?

Recommended Posts

So it looks like I'm missing a knock sensor. Got one on order but how does it actually work?

I know which plug it clips into but can't work out opposite end. It has a donut shape on the end with a cable running through it. I'm assuming that's a HT lead, is that right? If so how would you fit it through the hole. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Apologies if these are all massively obvious questions

Its basically a microphone for your engine and picks up 'knocks' during the ignition part of the stroke. It then sends a signal to the ecu to advance or retard timing. The critical thing is torquing it correctly! Otherwise it won't pick up anything or the opposite -too many things!

On earlier models yes, donut is located on the king lead for the dizzy. The VR6 has two and are bolted to the engine block. One front, one rear.
