changed wheels now drives bad at speed

ive put my bbs reps back on ready for the summer.driving down the bypass at 70mph the steering feels very light like the front wheels are not touching the road.my winter wheels are 205/40/17 event tyres tt reps .my bbs reps are 205/40/17 avon zz3 with a 3mm spacer on the front so they dont catch calipers.it drives much nicer with the winter wheels.any ideas cheers

I wouldn't have expected much differences as the tyres are the same size. I'd check the pressures for starters, but could be due to different brands having different stiffness in the side walls.

 

I ran some 17's with 205/40 tyres for a while and can honestly say I was glad to go back to 15's as the ride on 17 wasn't nearly as good.

probably not related to your issue but did you also torque your wheel bolts up properly? 110nm I believe

No I just guess,ive never used a torque wrench to tighten wheels

£25 at screwfix for one could save your life

 

I have had a wheel bolt come loose before & it is not a nice experience, I would hate to think what it would have turned out like if the wheel had come off due to more than 1 loosening

Did the wheels return to the same corners that they were originally fitted too?

Checked tyre pressure's and put 30 in them all.still feels crap.i might try and swop the wheels around

What spacers are you using? Have you had your alignment checked. Given that the tyres are not old and gone hard, running at the correct pressures, the wheels are in good order, then you need to go deeper into the issue. The sensation of a light front end, that feels unplanted is indicative of an alignment issue, if all other factors are sound.

Not sure if it would make any difference to your problem, but that pressure is much too low. With running 17", you need to go a couple of psi above standard. I always inflate to 35 psi personally, as you obviously have much shallower side wall which could lead to large bumps/potholes impacting the rim or slicing through the tyre if it compresses too much.

And "standard" is 36 psi on the front so I say go higher. I run standard 15" wheels and it's soggy as hell if it's less than 34 psi on the front.

 

I would suggest it's the spacers, but could also just need rebalancing.

hi i was using cheap universal spacers but have bought new hub centertic ones.i should get alignment checked but need to change an inner cv boot first

I wish I could gather every "universal" wheel spacer in this Isle and stick the blooming lot in the melting pot. They are responsible for so many issues of this kind.

As you have said, buy yourself some quality hubcentric spacers, specific to your PCD and then get your alignment sorted by a specialist who knows what they are doing and I feel sure your issue will be gone.

Thanks for offer but it's a bit far for me.I am using heliocentric spacers only 3mm.just thought I've not got them on the rear do you think that could cause a problem

Ideally you should balance the front and rear to keep the track relative front and rear.
