Loss of power with BMC / CDA .

Recommended Posts

Evening chaps .

I have recently fitted a BMC , I had a KnN fitted before. To me it seems like I’ve lost excelerating power. It’s like the opposite of a placebo effect. I’m sure it’s lacking in power . I can’t think of any reason at all why ?.

Any help or info would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Rob

Strange, as these are supposed to be better than the K and N aren’t they!? I had a K and N cone filter fitted to my VR and it wasn’t very good at all, like you say, loss of power. Have you got all the connections, jubilee clips and the like, fitted securely?

Did it happen in the last two days? If so, it's entirely down to 30 degree air.

Is it possible the MAF can’t cope with the change in air flow??

The engine isn't though. It will always make less power in hotter air.

No idea bud , the KnN was fine in the heat and there are supposed to be prone to heat soak .

I think if it was me, I’d put the standard air box back on or even the KnN and see if there’s a difference. At least then you can rule out the CDA.

That’s what I was thinking. The temp is supposed to drop tomorrow, I will give it a run then . I even thought about taking someone with me to compare the two , it takes minutes to swap them over .

Sounds like a plan. If I was more local I’d be more happy to join you for a spin!

A little up date and more questions.

I took the car for a spin on Saturday morning and the response was a lot better as it was cooler . I also noticed how quick the temp dropped when you are at speed from when it was stationary in traffic and the fans were coming on obviously the cooler air is rushing in . So do I really need to run a pipe from the filter to the grill ?. 1 it won’t look very nice . 2 it won’t do anything unless you are at speed anyway and as I said it’s cooling nicely without it . I also noticed it seems to get hotter quicker in traffic than when the KnN was fitted ?.

In general the standard air box is one of the best for maintaining cool air intake and avoiding heat soak. It draws air from behind the bumper rather than inside the engine bay.

That said, a big engine in a small engine bay tends to heat everything very quickly anyway, not much you can do about that and once all the ancillaries are steaming hot too there is no relief until you start doing some speed and forcing outside air through the system.

No, you don't need the corrigated pipe. Just leave the BMC as it is, the responsiveness is a lot better. It's a really good filter on the VR6, so I'm surprised your responsiveness hasn't improved. Probably a bad MAF. VR6s are notorious for it, as are most cars using the stupid over sensitive sensor.

I think I will do some trial runs today . I will have my son with me and use the stopwatch , hold it at 4K and floor it , standing start etc . Then swap back to the KnN . I just need a safe place to do it really . It might just be me Kevin.

Is the red cone inside the correct way round?

I would have thought so Jim , it came off a members car on here . Engine side is front , air side is to the Maf , correct?.

Its A long shot but a few years back, on my G60 when wanting power it faded, after many unsuccessful trips to VW specialist I decided to investigate: I found On the fuel Tank top cap where the pipes go into, inside the fuel tank the rubber hose that goes to the pump had a split so pressure wasn't there and leaking fuel back into tank.

good Luck

I thought engine side would be to the maf and air side to the air

Yeah it’s the right way round Jim . I just wrote it wrong . Once the traffic dies down I will go for another spin in it . It’s probably me , it was a really hot day the first time I used the car with it fitted.

I pulled my K&N filter a few months after buying it. I noticed no increase in anything but noise after I installed it. After 6 months of use, my car seemed to be slow, so I pulled it out thinking it might need cleaning already, and put my old, dirty OE air filter back in during the ridiculous 24 hours it takes to dry the thing. Immediately noticed more power with the dirty OE filter than with the only 6 month old K&N. I threw the K&N in the garbage and never looked back.
