ger040 3 Posted November 9, 2020 (edited) Called to my local vw dealer to buy my usual synta oil for the g60 only to be told its NLA They ordered it for me through TPS - but that is only while stocks last Pity because my car has had it its entire life they sell 5-40 as a replacement but they agree that its to thin for an old engine like mine The parts guy was surprised as it still sold well today was cheap as well which is unusual for anything vw - they charge me £17.00 all in for 5 litres Edited November 9, 2020 by ger040
fendervg 33 Posted November 9, 2020 They (Quantum) still seem to make at least 3 semi-synths conforming to VW 501.01/505.00 at 10w-40 https://quantum-oils.com/index.php/en/products/lubricants-cars#VENTUS Maybe one of those would be a suitable replacement? I've been using Liqui-Moly 10w40 recently from my local German car specialist, an seems to be fine.
fla 9 Posted November 9, 2020 Good link Fendervg. Oils is always a funny one - i generally see if the oil conforms to 510.01/505.00. Used fully synthetic in mine on the last service but tbh its not really been run as its still sorned so only goes around my dads estate. Also used Mannol recently in the Audi which had pretty good reviews.

Did not know quantum made other oils - i actually thought vw owned quantum tbh. - years ago the name was everywhere at dealerships i have never seen the quantum name on any other oils bar vw i have learned something new today thanks fendervg Edited November 9, 2020 by ger040

Grande GTi 11 Posted November 11, 2020 Hi There mate I work within the TPS Network, and 10W40 isn't going any where any time soon. So perhaps try a TPS Centre 🙂

It think the Quantum Silver has gone through a few name changes anyway, but 10w40 will always be in demand for a long time to come. Pity we don't have TPS here in Ireland. seanl82 23 Posted November 11, 2020 Yeah VW just sell Castrol Edge now. Makes it easier to purchase elsewhere much cheaper, as the Synta Silver was actually a very good price from VW. I've moved to Fuchs Titan pro race 10w50 now anyway though it is much more expensive, but a modern fully synthetic oil will be much better for our old and well worn in engines I think.
