can alternators from different makes of car fit my 1.8 16v? my crappy 65 amp one is not up to the job of keeping my battery charged ( due to ice install) also what would happend if a high rating alternator eg 120 amps was fitted? would it fry my electronics?

my central locking pump acts strange sometimes. both doors and the boot lock as they should. somtimes though the pump runs on for like thirty seconds or more, this is when locking and unlocking.there are no leaks in the system as ive checked that over. is the pump on its way out? im also still having mysterious battery drain problems and was wondering if this could be the cause? if it was the pump can i use a pump of a mk2 or mk3 golf?

was poking around under the engine bay today and found this stray wire.its on the left side of the engine bay next to the suspension turret (just behind the airbox) its just dangling there. its a brown wire with a terminal on the end but it has a black sleeve around it see pics its the wire furthest to the right the wire im holding (furthest to the top)

had a look at the car again today. the idle screw was turnable by hand! is it meant to be as loose as this? i adjusted the idle and the car runs perfectly, however the the 5th injector is stil disconnected

i just cleaned the throttle body, has made the car less lumpy on idle but the problem still exists where is the idle screw? have been suspecting this was at fault because when i first had the car it used to idle at 800rpm cold and about 1000rpm when warm. are the o rings available to buy?
-
i cleaned the isv thouroughly last week and there is no difference whatsoever
-
i have trouble starting my car from cold. most of the time when you turn the key it will start and then pack out. If u give it a bit of gas just after you start it it will keep running, but as soon as you come off it the idle will be very low.it will usually pack out at junctions as well. it will idle at at around 500 rpm .once warmed up i dont get any trouble and it will idle at around 800 rpm today i went out and disconnected the connector from the cold start injector. When i turned the key, i t didnt pack out although the idle was still at 500 rpm. i connected it again straight after and it packed out when started. what does this mean? by the way it has had new leads and a new distibutor, rotor and cap if that makes any difference

some one must be able to help me? been doing some searching on other forums and i have gone and got myself a 5 wire door lock motor.I am trying to wire this to my alarm so that i can use the motor to activate the central locking whe the remote button is pressed. when i got the motor there wasnt a wiring diagram , i have five wires - green, blue, black, brown and white. i know the black wire is earth. i hooked up the brown and white to the lock and unlock wires of the alarm and the black to the chassis. pressed the alarm button and i got nothing. i then found out that the alarm gives out a negative lock and unlock pulse. if i was to connect the black wire to a 12v positive would the motor work as it would be getting its negative from the pulses off the alarm? ( basically reversing the polarity) or woould it screw the motor up? Some one please help me as it is starting to do my nut in! cheers

ok ill give that a try, is it a case of just cleaning out the breather pipe? do u mean the fuel lines undeneath the car? ive done that before n petrol went everywhere lol is there a way i can de pressurize the system first?
-
yea ill probably change it to be on the safe side. im sure thats where the petrol smell is coming from when im driving aswell.how do u mean by difficulty filling the tank? i dont seem to have any problems with that though. where abouts is the breather hose? is it difficult removing the tank?
-
ive got an auto watch alarm , which was fitted on the car when i bought it.its a good alarm, the only thing that lets it down is that it isnt connected to the central locking so i cant lock it remotely. i have managed to get a wiring manual for the alarm and it says that the brown and brown/white wire can be connected to the central locking.does anyone know where i should wire this to? (i tried once but it didnt work - the alrm just kept goin off every time it was armed) i also set the central locking pulse to 3.5 seconds due to the central locking being vacum operated. cheers

the cap is a genuine vw item. ive only had the car since november last year, theres no evidence of the tank being removed. Is the valve you are talking about easy to change/obtain?

I dont know if anyone can help me with this.Recently ive been smelling petrol intermittently when im drivng, there arent any leaks because ive checked. even stranger though is this mornin after i got out the car i shut the door and i started to hear a hissing noise from the petrol cap area. I looked over and you could smell and see the fuel vapour.Ddoes anyone know what could be causing this? Its a 1989 1.8 16v\ cheers

i know its not my battery because its less than six months old and when i disconnect the live wire goin into the car it does not go flat.well im not too sure im doing the test right, do you know how to do the test?
-
i have a corrado 1.8 16v (1989) and my battery cannot hold a charge for more than a day.i know its not my starter motor or alternator because they are new and i have also left them conected to the battery and it didnt drain. i have heard of a test that can be done to check for a drain with a multimeter in series with the earth wire, but i get no reading. some one please help its driving me mad!

today i drove my car.the rev needle started to go crazy, i mean like up and down erraticly. after a while it stopped. later in the evening it did it again, the car packed out and hesistated start. when it did start it couldnt rev and made pops and bangs like a misfire. i left the car for 5 mins and all was good again. what could this be? ignition coil maybe?

i took the motor out today and powered it. the little black knob starts to turn but very very slowly and it doesent go all the way.does this mean the motor is shagged? can i rebuild the motor or do i have to buy a new one? are they expensive? sorry for all the questions, just got the car and this is the main thing that annoys me cheers
