  1. Surprised to hear Jabba getting such bad press - but then again I've been a bit 'out of the loop' recently. Having said that, when I spoke to them at GTI International a few years ago Mike had stopped doing the rebuilds and had hired another guy to do them for him. I wasn't so keen to send it to someone with unknown credentials, and when I spoke to the guy he was fairly off-hand (bordering on obnoxious) and downright unhelpful - I asked him if I could just take a day off work, drive over and have it done in a day. Not a chance - I'd have had to stay overnight :( Funny, since BRM rebuilt my charger the same day (the day after I bought my Corrado). That was 34K miles ago (in 5 years), might be due another rebuild soon if I'm going to keep it I guess!
  2. Going back to the original problem, I had that on my Mk1 Golf (same basic engine block with different internals but in this case maybe similar enough). The oil filter seal let go and sprayed oil everywhere. I replaced the oil filter, same thing happened - the seal just popped out! Turned out the oil pump had gotten clogged internally, so oil was being pumped only one way - ie. oil pressure was building up. Fortunately the cheapest component (other than the damned oil pump!) went first :) Might not be that, but it sounds like it...scared the crap out of me at the time, at first I thought the block had let go.
  3. Just an update - picked up a new motor on Friday lunchtime, nipped into the house for a screwdriver, whipped off the undertray, whipped out the old motor, transferred the resistor pack over (sheer brute force required here!) and put it all back together. 20 minute job + 58 quid = working interior fan :)
  4. Thanks...was wondering if that was the case, but the fact that it works fine sometimes made me wonder if it was something else :) And no, it's doesn't just work on speed 4 - it works on all of them (when it DOES work!) Will give that a go. Thanks! :) Oh by the way - I have no idea how to change it. Whereabouts is it?! Ta :)
  5. Hi all, Hopefully someone has an answer to this, it's getting a bit annoying :) My heater fan is playing up - sometimes I'll start the car and it's fine (I leave it on full so I can tell when I start the car if it's going to work or not). Other times it just doesn't work at all. When it DOES work, it's only for about 2 minutes - then it gradually slows until it stops altogether, and won't start again. Other times I'll notice that it's just started by itself... Weird one eh? I replaced the bonnet earth strap to no avail...any other ideas?
  6. Nice workmanship though, check out the continuation of the body contours along the Golf's doors and rear quarter. Looks like they've welded on Corrado panels over the top of the Golf ones and shaped to fit. An excellent piece of work, but (speaking as a Mk1/2 Golf GTI freak) from my perspective a bit of a waste of time :)
  7. Yep, I've got it somewhere, will try to look it out. Might be able to put it onto CD/DVD as well, but not before Christmas most likely (off to Oz on holiday in a week :) )
  8. Cheers for that, will give him a call :)
  9. Hi all, Anybody know of any decent bodyshops in Warwickshire? Just want to get a few quotes for the work mine needs, which is basically: - small dent in the front panel, under the grille -hit by bit of wood at 90mph - driver's door looks like a kid had dropped their bike down the side of it, a few deep scratches and pressure dents that need sorting - o/s rear quarter needs tidying - small bubble of rust on leading edge of wheelarch, small patch of bodywork on the seam that has clearly been filled before as you can see variation in the seam line. - passenger door/rear quarter have a gouge running across the door shutline (hence both panels need repairing & paint) - Front bumper needs blowing in, but will probably get the whole thing done Then the rest of the car mopped to match :) Got my first quote at lunchtime - about £450. Couldn't see any of their "work-in-progress" though, so not sure about that place. If anyone else knows of a decent place around here (without comedy prices - Bizzibodies are good but wanted £1200) I'd appreciate it :)
  10. To be honest, looking at the pictures (which of course isn't a guarantee :) ) the damage to the rear quarter definitely looks repairable to me - a DECENT bodyshop (ie. one that has a skilled guy who knows how to use a hammer and dolly, as opposed to filler and a spatula!) should be able to knock that out. Add on a new/secondhand door (painted of course), repairs to the front wing and I reckon you'd be back on the road again :) Having said that, still go for the full value of the car from the buggers...there's no guarantee that it IS repairable. But ask around, see if you can find a decent place in your neck of the woods. I can't tell from the photos if the sill is damaged (if it is, I wouldn't bother repairing it myself) but if the sill's OK (and there's no other structural damage) then it shouldn't affect the way the car drives. Like I said though, worth getting an expert (a proper one :) ) to look at it and quote. Got any classic car restorers round there? That's the sort of place that would have the skills you want.
  11. That still strikes me as an incredibly good price :) Nice one - mine actually has a little less damage and I wouldn't be after de-seaming and de-badging, but I was quoted £1200 by the local place, and that wasn't even a full respray!!! I might start shopping around then, could be worth investigating it again... Anyone know any good value (decent quality) bodyshops in the Warwick/Leamington/Coventry area?
  12. Difficult to tell really from a photo, but it definitely doesn't look helios blue - looks more like the colour of Scott Lester's old Mk2, which was a factory colour I cannot remember the name of :)
  13. OK, let me find the receipt for the work I've had done, that will at least give you an indication :) By the way the garage is "Wedgnock Car Sales" on Cape Road in Warwick. They're a small place, of the old-fashioned variety (as opposed to the "dodgy geezer" variety ;) )
  14. Definitely NOT Moonlight Blue :)
  15. Hi all, Hopefully someone can shed some light here... On the motorway, sometimes the speedo just gets a mind of its own - it never jumps DOWN, but often leaps up in speed momentarily. I don't know what's causing it, but at the weekend I tried coasting and blipping the throttle - the rise in revs seemed to trigger some sort of "induction" into the speedo as it seemed to correlate. Weird thing is it doesn't do it all the time..just sometimes. Any ideas?!?!? Ta,
  16. I see you're in Coventry - I know a good little garage here in Warwick who are very reasonable. They changed one of my wishbones last year for a ridiculously low price (they had to change the entire wishbone, apparently you can't just change the bush..?). Can't remember how much it was, can find out if you like. But they're friendly, efficient and cheap - never had a problem with any of the work they've done (but then I always get BRM to do the major stuff I guess!) The only thing is you'll need to take it elsewhere to get the steering and suspension geometry set up properly again, they don't have the kit to do all that.

    Scraping clutch

Mine has been doing this as long as I've had the car (4 years) and doesn't seem to have gotten any worse. Exactly the same problem - just does it the once, then it's fine. I stopped worrying about it after a year when it didn't get any worse (and BRM didn't think it was anything to worry about, having checked it over) :)
