  1. got new dizzy changing this soon. will update once changed. thanks
  2. cheers guys. very very clear on how to do it. haynes mentions setting it to tdc first then taking apart but id rather hear it from experience than a manual anyday. im trying to avoid doing the timing as i dont have a timing light as yet!!!!! can't do it today anyhow as ive got to drive the car tommorow and dont want to muck up the timing when the cars needed coz once it starts its a beaut but im very sure its the hall sensor that messing me a bout. got a new dizzy cheap so fitting the whole thing next weekend :D once ive got all this done i just ahve to work on some bodywork come spring .... yeee hah thanks again.
  3. fiiting a new distribitor on a 1.8 16v , anyone done it and know how to do it again? or is it a garage job? im quite interested to try and do it (rather than just cvhange hall sender) and then do my own timing but ive no experience in this area at all. thanks guys. ps couldn't find what i wanted on search
  4. ok now i had the opportunity to do some work and testing. new plugs, dizzy cap rotor arm (wanted to do this anyway). new coil. runs a beaut once started but still having starting issues def points to hall sensor but how do you change these. mate at a garage says fitting a new distributer would take no time at all compared to replacing hall sensor. any ideas and any ideas on prices thanks guys... ive tried the search.
  5. btw i am assuming 16v. Firstly listen to hear if fuel pump is primiing and turning on..... oops didnt see previous post. Try bleeding your fuel pipes in engine bay . Supposed to self bleeding but sometimes air bubbles will occur. Undo bolt for each one (one at a time) and prime it till fuel is showing (be careful), repeat. once you have done this try again. If its still not running take a spark plug out connect it to a ht lead (clean the ht lead if poss) and put it out of the way and get someone to keep an eye on it whilst you crank to see if there spark. if no spark check earth lead between coil and engine block, clean dizzy cap try again. if still no joy doublecheck battery and post more details.
  6. thanks for the help will be testing ahoy once i get some goodish weather. Please refer to my wanted list if anyone can help. on the main list is a cheap coil , newish leads, and now possibly a hall sender. (will be buying a new dizzy cap for all the cost).
  7. please read later post in this thread thanks  soz could not find straight answers to help using search. no spark / starting issues 1.8 16v :( batterys ok. compression is good engine is turning over. no spark/ not starting first time. can someone please list logical steps for diagnosis bearing in mind the batt is ok have even tried giving boost. Also note was starting first time , then took few attempts to start but once started ran fine. Now no spark? (have taken ht lead and spark plug out to check if spark across plug). Need help on where to go from here? ________________________________ My car is being such a twisted *******.
  8. It is possible it could be overfueling and under fueling causing theses issues. check for strange noises( or it even turning on) when your fuel pump is priming try it a few times to see if it sounds healthy and watch out for the buzzing sound which means its not long to go. Lambda is also a possibility.
  9. ok update: loosened off both ps belt and alt belt and retightened slowly. Now no noise... so must have been too tight. PS belt slipping on full lock though and wont adjust well enough to stop so time for new PS belt i think. Changing that tommorow. For info: costs - alternator belt £4 ps belt £3. Will keep people updated iun hope that this will help someone else.
  10. my mate got 5 years for manslaughter after crashing and his gf died (no alcohol , just an accident). enough said. :(
  11. I did have those symptoms once could hear the solenoid click but no starter. turned out to be dead cell in battery wouldn't start even with a jump cause the cell was causing it to short or something. Could also be an immobiliser playing up if its between the solenoid and the starter circuit but thats just a stab in the dark really. if you think it may be an old immobiliser try hotwiring it to the negative to see if the starter starts. I think you should def check the battery first though. borrow a mates or something to try it. good luck.
  12. ok no replies so no one is sure. ill try trial and error disonnecting the belt again and checking for play in each pulley etc... wish me luck.
  13. having changed my belt im now greeted to a ratchety noise when i try to start it and i think my starter motor is under strain. Waterpump? it was working fine before the belt snapped. Belts too tight? Airlock? have no idea im really clutching at straws coz im hoping i dont have to do a pump change. dont think im good enough a mechanic for that and i aint the money to spend. Any ideas/help appreciated, I've ran out of time to work on it further for today . thanks davidwort you werent kidding about that nut being fiddly. ta.
  14. now postponed till sunday will try and take pics for help section.

  17. anyone else able to doublecheck im thinking of agreeing with supercharged about it being too long but its to go round 3 pulleys so i may be wrong. Also anyone know about whether it has to be ribbed or not thanks
  18. anyone able to check the part no to make sure that the spare belts the right one and any more detail on how to refit this? thanks
  19. emm talking rubbish meant two belts not under covers. ahem
  20. is ther any other way of doing this without unbolting all the bolts on power steering pump and it woul appear i only have two belts unless im mistaken (its a bit dark to look) oh arse.
  21. just found original pakaging part no 060 903 137 v belt
  22. belt now changed. ratchety noise further help needed. plz see later post assistance please: belts the one coming off the alternator 16v Can comeone please confirm the name of this as im not sure. Id call it a fan belt. This has broke on my way home from work (broken part sv8 10 950 i think its kinda worn). I noticed its ribbed does it have to be ribbed? I have a spare belt (non ribbed) part no c00 060 90 137 contitech fo 9,5x1013 la 147 is this the right part as i though it was a fan belt but it seems bigger (unless the belt split in 3 places and ive lost a bit). Any help would be greatful the cars a 1,8 16v also any help on how to adjust the pulleys to get the new belt on would be greatful. thanks ps couldn't find this when searching.
  23. dunno whats the worst insurance as my valver was pretty cheap compared to my xjs which was £850 3 party fire theft (tft). Valver was about £500 tft when i first got it but has now plummeted to 260 with 3 points on my license and 5 years no claims on the street in a city (thats with adrian flux) :D . Think the most ive ever paid was a volvo 440glt which was over the 1000 mark for 3rd party lol
  24. take it your running on the spare then. lol emmm... oops
