Not good, have you got any photos, like of the damaged sump etc?
-
Well the one just coming down the hill from the A3 heading into Bordon was me in my Blackberry VR!! Cool. Welcome to the Forum. Are you local to Bordon?
-
2 on the A325 between A3 and Bordon, I think they were both Blackberrys but possibly one was a Sherry Pearl. I was in my other half's Blackberry, so there may have been 3 Blackberrys within 1/2 mile of each other at the same time. What are the chances!

VR6 timing chains. Few questions from the chaps that know.
andy replied to MonkeyVR6's topic in Engine Bay
Looks like I jumped the gun then :( Sorry Chap! Its a shame they didn't design it so you could remove it easier. Its kind of the point I was trying to make earlier in the thread. Its such a ball ache to change the thing, you're kind of opening a can of worms by checking it. When in all probablilty it will cover many tens of thousands of miles even with wear on it. Mine had deep grooves in it fifty thousand miles ago. Even if it does wear right through it has a dirty great metal surface behind the pad which I would hope to hear if the chain was running on it. I know for a fact that I will probably have my engine apart for worn bores and valve stem oil seals at some point so I will look at the chains then. Whilst it is all apart, not because it has reached some mythical milage figure. -

You can't replace the upper tensioner pad by just removing the rocker cover etc. Its a gearbox off job. Also the only thing you can check by removing those things anyway is the upper tensioner pad, which ironically is the thing you can't change without further major work anyway. -
Sorry if this has been discussed already but how can do you get a card?
-
Either you were wearing one or you weren't, you are the only one who knows for sure. If you were then you should contest it, if you weren't (but your p1ssed off about the whole thing) and letting off steam, then you should let it go. I know there is no way on this earth I would let a copper tell me black was white.

Have you run the tappets in, as I described. It honestly makes the world of difference. I cringed when I put new tappets in a few years ago, it sounded awful. Then I read about running them at raised revs for a few mins and it went silent.
-
Obviously their proirity is to sort the misfire out. You need the thing to be running properly before you can comment on any other strange noises. One thing worth noting is that new tappets are noisy generally. They will chatter for a while, there is normally a running in period, ie so many thousand revs for several minutes, then they settle down a bit. I'm not sure that is your problem though, not quite sure what 'chapping' is. :)

Clearly not. No one is saying that and I for one am as keen on preventative maintenance as the next man. I just don't subscribe to the paranoia about timing chains on VR6s. As I say, through personal experience, not reading forums. Thats my opinion on the matter, I am allowed one. You and I both know a worn out tensioner pad will not, on its own, cause a chain to slip. I would be far more concerned that the tensioner bolt itself was doing its job, I have known these too fail, and for the sake of £30 that is where I would be spending my money. -

You can worry about it all you like. It won't do you any good or change anything. I have owned three high mileage VR6s myself, have several friends with them and my other half has owned two, all maintained by me. I do know a bit about it thanks. I don't rely on everything someone else, ie Stealth, have told me or listen to scare stories on forums in order to gain an informed opinion. There is even a moderator on this very forum quoting that headlight switches should be replaced every few years. Come on. Just because yours was worn down to the rivets at 93k means what exactly. If I choose not to change my engine oil, and rape the car senseless everyday from cold, I expect I would wear the bottom end out fairly quickly. It doesn't mean VRs are predetermined to wear out bottom ends regularly. Every car should be taken on its own merits, taking into account previous maintenance, general history/condition. -
If you have checked for air leaks, I'd get the car checked out on Vagcom. It could be so many things.

Sweet! Think how many cambelts some cars would have had in that time! -

They are not due at any mileage, if the engine has been looked after and its running fine I seriously wouldn't worry. There are far too many scare stories about VR6 chains. My VR6 has 148k on it and the chains are original, as is the clutch etc etc. I've known countless VRs with that sort of mileage with no chain work. If the engine gets noticeably noisier then check out the upper tensioner as described. Until then....enjoy it. VRs are incredibly tough engines. -
because they may have watched another one previously.... Hmmm, just watched it, VR6 all the way for me, no comparison, good work Kris!
-
How could anyone not want a VR6 after watching that vid!
-
Your symptoms sound the same to me, its common for them to run fine but have stalling issues. If you've checked the ISV, check the whole air intake system for air leaks and also the device that comes off the top of the cam cover and feeds into the intake, they commonly break up and leak air.

What? "I wasn't speeding, I was doing 50 in a 40." "I didn't have a missing number plate, it was on the dash." Come on chap. You were obviously unlucky, I'm not saying for one minute I'd have done anything differently. But....you were in the wrong. As you say, take the hit and move on
-
Oops. http://www.the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewto ... 7&start=30 Look at the post by fla on p3, maybe that guy can help?
-
At the end of the day, they've pulled you for speeding (which although they have no proof of, they were sure enough to stop you). They haven't fined you for that (as they have no proof). The fact you didn't have a number plate properly displayed EITHER has counted against you further. Its all about the Police forming a picture about people, speeding.....no number plate....lets pull it. I think you got off lightly, you knew you shouldn't do it but you took the risk, and got caught. Just pay the fine, you had no number plate displayed correctly, the police will have a field day. I'm sure they've heard a million people who say its just happened but have been driving round for months like it. Why should you be treated differently.

Saved .....Cheers. :) -
Is a CDTi not a diesel then?
-
Where/how did you get them rebuilt? I could be up for some of that!
-
Hi Chap, Do a search for ISV and/or ISV cleaning, its very common and there is loads of info on here about how to solve it :)
-
I do that a week just getting to work and back! Yes of course but where's the fun in being sensible? You did buy a Corrado VR6 after all. Maybe you should have bought ...... Simply not an issue. This forum is full of scare stories about chains. Mines on 146k on original chains, no excessive noise means I'm not worrying about it. There are even people on here that think a Headlight switch should be changed every three years.....seriously! Yes, and enjoy! Get those V1s settled in!
