  1. Think coilovers have the advantages of height and recoil (don't think most allow the rebound to be adjusted, think thats the right way round) adjustment, are are more compact so you can put bigger wheels on without fouling the suspension. Differing openions but when I was looking for coilovers I was warned that even on the softest setting they are generally harder than normal uprated kits. This plus the cost put me off.
  2. Don't buy a house, buy a Corrado.. Top gear, sure as hell difficult to sustain both. I'm waiting for the classic status to push the prices up.. Shame you can buy VR6's for £3500 now, can't see that happening for a while.
  3. I live between Eastbourne and Brighton on the coast. Have tried loads of searches on the net, only found one and their not answering. Seems to be loads in the london and kent areas.
  4. Anyone know where to look for a mobile auto electician? Have used them before, they have a van with all the diagnostics gear etc. Thought there would have been a national company, can't find any numbers for one though.

    OIL COOLER

I think that connector is the spare for the air conditioning if you don't have it. Not sure about the relay box. The MFA should be thin vacuum pipe that connects to the back of the dash, not sure where it goes in the engine bay though.

    front spoiler

When you lower it be careful of the sump aswell, mines down 40mm on standard 15" and I nearly went through it. Had to get a plate welded on to the sump just behind the drain plug. Cat cover plate used to hit occassionally over the bumps aswell.

    box problem

Does the clutch slip now? Ragged my old 8v Golf and the diff shot one of its bolts through the casing and into the clutch housing. Didn't hear anything, just noticed the clutch slipping, got home and I had left a trail of oil all the way home. Was going to sell it aswell, not really a good advertisment for directions.. 'just follow the trail of oil from the main road'. :) Changed the box and kept it until the oil had dissappeared in the end.

    2.8 v 2.9

Good point, that's why we all need to be enthuasts (or try and stay enthuastic) to put up with the problems older cars will have I suppose, especially performance cars. Must have been good jobs to get them as CC's.

    2.8 v 2.9

The 2.8L is a 81.00mm bore and the 2.9L is a 82.00mm bore. I think on the Vortex forum they were saying any bigger than 83.00mm bore (3.0L) and ovalisation problems can really start. Not exactly thick cylinder walls to start with.

    2.8 v 2.9

Can't see that the extra displacement gave an extra 12bhp on its own as mentioned on here before. Does the 2.8 run as hot as the 2.9 standard? Why would the thinner walls of the bore create more ovalisation unless its down to the heat warping them? Me no understand, except mines been rebored so I've only got about 75,000mls going by that before I need the next one.
  11. The engine has been running since the rebuild, sounded lovely, even had that whistle which I never had before. Mechanically I think its sorted. The hydraulic lock was probably down to unburnt fuel cos there was no sparks. I towed it away from the garage who got the hydraulic lock, took it to a local garage and it started there, he drove it into the workshop then it went back to not starting again. Starting to loose it now, want it sorted so I can sell it then get a 16v mkII which is what I should have done to start with. Problem is I'm struggling to find anyone who wants to know. Baring in mind I need to tow it wherever so I'm looking for something local, otherwise Sealth or such would have been called a long time ago.
  12. I need to get hold of the bracket which has the ignition switch and steering lock mechanism in it which the stalks also mount to. Is it possible to swap the lock tumpler from my old one into the new one so I still only have 1 key for all the locks in the car.
  13. Anybody know of a specialist near the Brighton / Eastbourne area to sort out a few little niggles I have with the VR. All the usual garages I use have asked me to tow it home again. Anyone had any experience with these mobile car electrician things?

    VR6 ECU dead!

Trying to find out the price, waiting for a response from an email. Its dated 3/93 which is the same as mine so its probably worth a go as you say.

    VR6 ECU dead!

Cheers Storm, thought that site had closed. Got a response, theres one going with the same number as mine except its AF not AG. Any ideas whether that would work or not?

    VR6 ECU dead!

Apparently the later VR6's also use an air flow sensor different to the earlier hot wire type, so immobiliser units can't be decoded and used on earlier cars. Grid or something? Tried ATP Electronics with no joy. The original one had an unrepairable fault, doing all kinds of things resulting in blowing that little black box for buffering the air up. Got a reconditioned from stock, that intermittently cut signals to the coil pack. Sent that back, they said a fault was found although when I refitted it the same started happened. Now have nothing, but they are going to give me an ECU for exchange purposes only.

    VR6 ECU dead!

Thanks for the advice as always people. Tried Ebay, Stealth and AmD, all haven't got one. VW want £550.00, how much do you think I can sell a L plate '93 for without a brain? Would be abit difficult to test drive but looks good and won't rattle. The search continues...

    VR6 ECU dead!

Anyone know where I could get a replacement ECU, part no: 021 906 258 AG for a '93 VR6 (which happens to be a '94 engine). After trying getting the old one repaired, then exchanged for a reconditioned unit, none have worked and now the supplier has said they can't do anything but refund my money. :( It's the usual, well it is a rare car and we don't keep much for them etc. Not even sure whether a second hand unit is worth the risk, just want to put off asking the stealers until I know there is no other option. Waited two weeks to find this out. Not much on a car that hasn't run for over 6 months now though I suppose.
  19. I'll add the MT90, VT's and bushings to the list of things to do, maybe it'll help stop the occassional crunch into third when giving it some serious stick aswell. Do use the clutch by the way before anyone says it. :)
  20. Synincal mode again, maybe the lack of grease was another cost cutting exercise like the lower quality castings for the inlet manifold etc compared to earlier cars (when I got them sand blasted this was the owners comments), head light wiring loom, no oil cooler. Another thought, why use a cable change gearbox? Does anyone prefer that to a push rod system? I still don't feel as confident flying through the gears cos it feels like its going to break. I know we should all expect things to go wrong on old cars, just don't think their as rock solid as some like to believe. I think thats more down to luck than the build. Well interesting what people think without getting to emotional about it.
  21. Any ideas where the knock sensor is on a VR? Is that the one which changes the timing if the engine starts pinking or knocking?
  22. Is that the round thing near the multi-connector for the engine sensors? Mine sounds rattly, thinking that might be the electric coolant circulation motor though (remember reading somewhere they have one to stop air pockets when the engines off after a run).
  23. And talking to one of the mechanics at a open evening Porsche had (mate blagged invites from an invitation for the old owner of his flat :) ), they don't work when cold which is abit scary.
  24. Just wanted to start a list of hates people have had with the 'future classic', please add yours.. All to often the bad points are forgotten, and I think people should know what they're getting themselves into. I made the mistake of thinking a Corrado would be a refined mk2 Golf with better handling etc. No doubt faster round the corners, more fun?? Not so sure after driving my old mk2 about at the weekend. Built better, better sensation of speed, lighter, less to go wrong, cheap to fix. I hate rattles.. The Corrado is built like s**t. Windows, behind dash, centre part with the handbrake. Pretty much everywhere really. Makes me laugh when I tell people and they go 'but its a VW'. Realise that doesn't mean anything now, good old Karmann. May aswell change that badge for Fiat. Sunroof. Say no more, poor poor design. Spoiler. Given up working automatically now. Oil consumption and running temperatures. They managed to put a proper oil cooler on the mk1's, why couldn't they sort something out on this. Price of parts.. Again thought being a VW I would be able to get things at similar prices as the Golf, not a chance. Remember someone on hear saying its comparable to Porsche prices, should have listened to that. Don't get me wrong.. I'm very dissapointed with this car but it does go alright when it wants to. Is it worth all the grief though, thats what Im asking myself.
  25. Not sure whether this is relevant or not but had a problem with a Polo overheating and blowing the expansion tank every now and again. Radiator and thermostat were up etc. Turned out to be the head gasket leaking between one of the bores and a cooling channel. That didn't smoke, but gas was getting into the cooling system and over pressurising it. The garage found this by using a sort of bung fitted into the expansion tank with some sort of liquid in it which changed colour if gases were in the system. Abit vague I know, but might be worth you getting that done just to make sure.
