    VR6 Oil Smell

PCV valve split and dropping a small volume of oil onto the exhaust manifold?
  2. It's a wedge added to the butterfly, it adds a slight restriction to the butterfly to make small throttle openings less jerky. Mine didn't have it either.
  3. If there is oil on the top of the plug, then it's probably some heavy handed oil filling or the rocker cover gasket. Remove the plug and clean it. Could be a dodgy injector too. Is it definitely No.6 that is missing?

You not putting pics of the C3 up??? :(
  6. Didn't see this thread before. Glad you're ok... ;)
  7. Started the VR today for the first time since January. Have worked out that it has an engine that was put in roughly after April 2001, probably done 70k guessing from the service history. The chain guide had snapped and the tensioner bolt was shot. Replaced these, and it started straight away, lovely and smooth, better than I remembered from before, so I guess the flappy chain has done it some good. But... There is still a rattle, and cyclic clacking sound. I've decided to treat it to new chains and tensioners all round, new oil pump. Leave the head on for the time being, as I don't have the cash or time to mess around changing it for the exciting one I bought earlier this year. The engine and box were coming out so I could put a new gearbox on it anyway. Just need to pop the new ggearbox open just to have a look for anything nasty first. In the mean time, I've begun rewiring the stereo, speakers and throwing sound deadening in. Getting a bit tired of it, well getting pretty tired of a lot of things, but I'll be glad when it's running nice and smoothly again.
  8. I'll look it up on the bentley when I get in, but I assume it's just foooooking tight.

    random smoke from a vr

Tired valve stem seals I believe.
  10. Were you thinking about me while you were doing it? I fitted a new chain guide to the vr and turned it over, everything seems ok. Hopefulyl will start it at the weekend now. Then drove home in the 16v stopping to pick up fuel and talk to a new scirroco owner.
  11. Is the cat light an engine warning light? just spelt in foriegnish.
  12. Cheers for the lesson in filtration. Do you actually think I'm a fecking idiot? The volume of air the engine consumes is massive, thousands of litres per minute at high revs, do the maths. I simply cannot see that that volume will get heated by a few mm of filter material, the air passes through the filter in micro seconds. The rest of the induction system is more likely to have an effect than the filter. Secondly, the VW snorkle is placed at the back of the headlight, where it clearly does snuffle enough air up. And the plastic guides have no effect on the airflow once it's inside the engine bay, there's loads of it being forced in at any sort of reasonable speed, so some will end up in the air intake. as well as flowing out under the car and out the back of the bonnet.
  13. Use your ABV 2.9 pistons and rebore the 2.8 block to 2.9....
  14. I must admit I'm not convinced about this... When you see how much air the engine sucks in, and the volume being shoved through the grille and around the light when you're doing a reasonable speed, I just can't imagine that the filter would get hot enough to upset anything? The design and flow through the filter would be more important. In traffic it would potentially make more difference, but who needs all your power when you're doing less than 10mph???
  15. I'm pretty sure it's not Quicky
  16. First of all the guy who aligned it is talking bollocks. Secondly he should have clamped the steering wheel in the dead straight position BEFORE adjusting the track rods anyway, you shouldn't need to touch it. Thirdly you should take it back, shout, and make them do it again, properly this time.[/quote:1fwqxk20] The rack has been off and the UJ swapped, so I guess it was inevitable that it would end up in the wrong place.
  17. Don't know if passats are the same, but the toledo uses the same door handle as the corrado. However the arm to open the door and the part that works the lock are different. One of Dave16vs door handle repair kits and the lock part from the rado handle will sort these issues out though. Just thought I'd share incase anyone had had their handle snap in a different way to normal.

    slow response!

defintely keep us posted with this one, i think im experiencing the same sort of problem with mine, it runs great but hesitates when i put my foot down. does the cam sensor age and become weak over time or is it a case of, it works or it doesnt work? Chris, is your diagnostic cable connected up? Can't remember if we talked about it when you popped over. I've got Vag-Com if you want to take a look at it. Tom.
  19. You could just connect the bits of pipe together for the time being. VW is your best bet for a new one, but I don't think they are supposed to make a huge difference. I don't think it's uncommon for these to pop.
  20. Right. Dom came down today with a sack full of goodness for me, Took the end cover off, removed the bits of guide (1 bit has ended up in the sump or stuck part way down) and tried to fit the new guide. Sadly the guide was changed in 1998, I have a 1997/98 guide, the engine is probably later than April 2001 judging by some casting marks, therefore the guide wouldn't fit.... I'll now be getting another guide from VW to try this week. Bit frustrated with it now. The timing all looks ok judging by setting it up tonight ready for putting it back together. I suppose that is one good thing.
  21. It's connected to the carbon canister as mentioned above and will affect the running of your car.
  22. No worries. That is stunning. I wish I had a tenth of your ability...
  23. That looks foooking gorgeous! Really really good work there...
