How to fit / wire / install obd2
Mike Edwards replied to C488ADO's topic in [Archive] Wiki Submissions & Collaboration
Has anyone down a before and after rolling road test to see what difference the OBD2 conversion makes? -
Just to be clear, I'm wearing a full flame suit as i type this… Brand new 288mm with genuine VW disks and pads are good on a 5-stud; Brand new 280mm with genuine VW disks and pads are great on a 4-stud; Ibiza Brembos on a 4-stud are epic (when warm). Anything else will require a new master cylinder to better stock for bite and feel...

Try resting the bearing on one of those top mounts to see if it fits.
-
Hmm... On the standard VR6 strut the bearing fits over the thread so that the centre seats against the end of the threaded section of the shaft (and is held there by a nut that goes on top of it). The upper spring plate butts up against the underside of the bearing, allowing the lower part of the strut, the spring, and the upper spring plate to rotate relative to the shaft. The top cap, and the washer are always going to be the wrong size...

Given that the last set of coilovers i fitted to a Corrado VR6 went on in 2007 (KW V1s), it's possible that my memory is playing tricks. However, I'm pretty certain that the original plate has to be there, so i suggest that you try: GAZ upper spring plate, spacer, original upper spring plate, bearing, top mount, nut. Fit this to the front upright and feed the top mount up into the strut tower. Once the car is back on its wheels, add the plate and lock nut visible in your original pictures. This is for a VR6 top mount BTW. And yes, this will do radical things to the handling compared to what you've got atm...

Rams, the parts diagram you posted is of an early 4-cyliunder, rather than a VR6 (No.9 is a threaded bush that holds the combined top mount and bearing on to the strut). In your pictures I don't see the upper spring plate from the original suspension that the bearing sits on. You will need this - in addition to the top spring plate of the Gaz coilovers - in order to run the VR6 top mounts. ---------- Post added at 4:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 4:16 PM ---------- That spacer in the photograph would probably fit between the Gaz top spring plate and the VR6 top spring plate. HTH

Is there an echo in here???
-
Rams, it looks like you forgot something. The top mount bearings perhaps? :)
-
Been there, done that. Not sure I agree...
-
Three things: 1. The motor is badly worn, and needs to be replaced; 2. The mechanism is very stiff due to lack of lubrication (but it tilts up so this is a contributory factor, but not the current problem); 3. The mechanism on the left hand side has worn to the point that it is jamming. To test, try manually cranking the mechanism in both directions (tilt and slide). If it's a lot more difficult in the slide direction, the roof is jamming and is going to snap a cable end shortly. To fix it the roof needs to be removed so the worn bits (or the whole roof) can be replaced. You're going to need a "Water Guide Plate Left" to fix your existing roof. Obviously if it moves smoothly in both directions, the problem is the motor. HTH
-
More likely the mechanism hasn't been lubed in years and the motor can't cope, but the effect is the same... :)
-
A word of warning. Gearbox related skulduggery.
Mike Edwards replied to Overmind's topic in Drivetrain
Look upon it as an opportunity to upgrade to the newer/older mechanism. :) -
Interesting. Can you remember how much and whether this was damaged, or patched up? Is it buried somewhere in the For Sale section perhaps?
-
Not bought it yet...

Something to consider: New discs, pads, hoses and fluid will give you surprisingly good brakes, regardless of size. If you do track days, bigger discs will be more fade resistant but that's it. I mention this as the most surprisingly good-feeling brakes on any of the 5 Corrados I've owned resulted from fitting new genuine parts to one of the G60s. This despite running 288mm and 312mm set ups on a VR6, and a set of Ibiza Brembos on the 16v (which were mind blowing when warm...). ---------- Post added at 7:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 7:50 PM ---------- Something to consider: New discs, pads, hoses and fluid will give you surprisingly good brakes, regardless of size. Nice to see everyone today - even though the breeze was a bit chilly. :)
-
Dan, You're selling my old car! I owned it for over 7 years, and sold it in 2008. What route do you take between Walsall and Wales? I'm in Herefordshire, just off the M50. :)
-
Hmmm... look at the signature block and advise me on which would be the least offensive vehicle to show up in... Okay, so how do i tell if the forum has actually logged my message? ---------- Post added at 9:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 9:38 PM ---------- Oh. £4.5k I think?
-
Yes... Now, Mods: Why can't I see the PM i sent him???
-
I did. Plus the brakes, exhaust, wipers, headlights, and... Bit worried by the starter motor - that was a brand new genuine part at 120k. Sunroof - oh well.
-
At that price it's a no-brainer. Plus, having owned a total of 5 of them, I know how to fix them... ---------- Post added at 8:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 8:55 PM ---------- Also, I can finally do the OBD1.5 mod that i still have the bits for (6 years after selling it...)
