I put my original flywheel and clutch in with my R32 lump (clutch was changed at 100k I believe, not sure about flywheel, but clutch has still done ~60k) and it's coping with the massive low down torque and throttle response just fine, no slippage or anything and it looked like new still even after Rotrex usage as well lol.

Oh right! So what actually needs replacing then? Any pics of said problem on yours?

Granted it would be a lot better at putting the power down and would be quicker top end but a mid range race (i.e. motorway!) would be in the corrados favor in this case I reckon. You can't just say this car has 377bhp compared to this one with 300bhp therefore the 377bhp car will win hands down as you have to take in to account the actual WHEEL hp and weight. My corrado for example is 280bhp at the flywheel, but only loses 40bhp through the transmission giving it 240whp. So if the corrado was a 300bhp turboed one then it could have say 260whp. So 260 / 1.3 (1300kgs) gives 200whp/tonne. The Lotus on the other hand is RWD and will have bigger wheels etc which mean more transmission loss (take an E46 M3 for example, 338bhp at the fly but they only have about 250 at the wheels due to transmission losses) so lets say it has about 300whp. That means 300 / 1.65 (1655kgs) gives the Lotus 181whp/tonne. So the corrado would have the edge!

:pale: I was hoping it would be a bit less than that! My engine has done around 7k now (supposedly!). I will have to check if I can hold the revs at 2k rpm in neutral, I think it can tbh but I'll check anyway.
-
Wow cheers for the Ian! That gives me something to look in to at least. How hard/easy/expensive is that to fix?
-
I've seen it He showed me it when I was there on the rollers, I was impressed as it's quite a big intercooler!!
-
To be fair though, your engines not exactly done that many miles has it ;) just the chassis and most of that would be new  Mine's on 160,000 now. The old engine was still perfect at that mileage as well, although we did do headgasket and chains etc. New engine's a bit less than that though 8)

Kev's the man with the plan! His interior is virtually silent, I couldn't believe it when I first went in it, I thought it was a different car!
-
Kev had his VRT weighed in at 1260kg with full tank!

No nothing yet mate, just been driving it. I'm skint at the min so haven't got round to doing anything. Should hopefully get it sorted soon though.

The definitive "What Air Filter?" discussion thread
herisites replied to CazzaVR's topic in Engine Bay
Like it 8) very pricey though just for an air filter! -
I was waiting for you to reply about my little moan Kev! I just got a PM off Leon about it as well  I'm not saying it's bad as like I said to Leon, the look of the engine in the bay, the exclusivity of it, the noise and performance more than make up for little niggles like over responsive throttle and vibrating etc etc. Kev, I already have a standard rear mount but have VT front and gearbox mounts. I originally had the MK2 TDI gearbox mount on the VR and that never vibrated with just the VT front so I think I will go back to that setup and see if that helps a bit. The vibrating just makes it difficult as the engine is quiet when not revving high as you know so when on part throttle at low revs it vibrates and my interior all vibrates like a b*stard now so I can't hear the engine  So I find I am putting my clutch in a LOT and then of course I pull it out and accidentally touch the throttle a bit too much and then the revs rise rapidly and I'm slipping the clutch! :brickwall: I'm getting used to it now though. My suspension isn't helping either, it's crashy as feck which isn't helping when you need to just breath on the throttle

Wings and scuttle I believe! And boot yeah for battery and big things. That brown one looks stunning! :luvlove:
-
Yeah 'Hard Work' is how I have been describing it for town driving. I am even tempted to downgrade my engine mounts as I have solid ones now and I don't think they're helping with the jerky on-off throttle and are certainly the cause of the vibrations when coming off idle!

Hmm that's interesting, mine didn't throw any errors for the MAF so don't think it's faulty. We noticed mine went flat when my inlet manifold switched which has led us to believe it could be something to do with that. We couldn't see any issues with the barrel. It's a weird one. I'm going back to Stealth soon to test with a new manifold to see if that cures the problem. I have to say I am in the same mind set as you. I didn't spend as much as I did all the engine work etc myself, all I got done for me was the wiring but mine's also the MK5 and has had problems etc. That's not bothering me as problems can be sorted easily enough. My issues are with it not being suited for the car like you say, I think it needs the full setup to be appreciated. It's not very refined at all, which I think is down to the throttle response and the fact it's only using a single mass flywheel so it's jerky coming on and off part throttle through town. The R32 with the correct gearbox etc has the dual mass flywheel which I think takes that all away and gives it much smoother delivery. When going through the gears on an open smooth road it's spot on, nice and quick (could be quicker for me personally ) and good delivery.

Have you found out what caused your flat spots at all mate?
-
I can't see myself ever selling mine! :nono: But then loads of people have said that before and have sold theirs sooner or later. I'm in the middle of buying my first house and have managed it without selling the car, I'm bloody skint mind but I was determined to have both! Good man! At the end of the day if push comes to shove etc you can sleep in the Rado but you can't drive the house... I said the exact same thing when looking at buying the house. Everyone was telling me I should sell the car but I said I'd rather sleep in the corrado than have the house if that was my only option

3 years 2 months 1 week and counting!

I was doing all the nerdy workings out the other night with my mate and it's quite surprising how little HP you need in such a lighter car to have similar power/weight as some of the real big boys. Kev, your calculations are on crank bhp as well remember. That 470bhp would probs be more like 370bhp at the wheels on that thing being RWD and having HUGE wheels and brakes etc etc! So would be more like approximately 185bhp/tonne at the wheels. My rado for example, only 280bhp but it's still 240 at the wheels, so mine would work out to be (assuming its 1300kg) 184bhp/tonne at the wheels 8) If going on your car being about 1500kg 3's up then you'd need about 275 WHEEL horsepower to keep with that thing, so yeah yours is on good power indeed!

I thought she had Grey leather in hers? I've just put the beige interior in mine and it does indeed look lush 8)
-
The Mk1's looking great mate! Looking forward to seeing it progress.
-
Oh yeah, forgot you had that. Oh well won't fit anyway. I'm not sure if the Mk4 R32 one is the same or not though.
-
Well I spent most of yesterday on Stealth's rollers and I now know what power she's kicking out, and the result is ............. 278bhp! 8) Not too shabby! BUT and that's a big round full bodied BUT, there is a HUGE flat spot in the torque curves at 2k! We compared the torque curves to a standard remapped Mk5 R32 and the torque shoots up straight away, then stays up and starts to fade off after 4k. Mine however shoots up but then at 2k it shoots down to hardly anything, then goes up, down a bit then up and fades out. So the only time my car feels like it's shifting is over 4k and then when the power is actually fading out! We noticed that it's when the inlet opens that the torque goes right down. So we opened the flap, we like a good flap opening ;), but couldnt see a problem with it, it turned freely and lined up correctly with the short intake and the long intake. We tested it by holding the flap open which should give us the top end power but no low down torque ... it did 278bhp top power to be precise on the best run. Then we held it closed which should have shot the torque right up but gave hardly any power ... it didn't the torque was exactly the same but had no top end power. So we figure the problem MUST be something broke inside the inlet manifold causing there to be no real difference between the long or short intake. I had many runs and we tried many things but just couldn't put a finger on it. So I got it MOT'd (which it passed by the way 8) ) and then I left. I am going to go back soon as Jon is getting an R32 lump soon to replace the one that fudged up in his Bora so he will have all the inlect etc available. So we're going to try his inlet on my car, run it on the rollers and see if that fixes it and if it does I'll have his inlet and then we are going to do a custom remap for my car as the ones so far have just been copied and they aren't the best for my setup. So it's getting there, at least it's not running on 5 cylinders and it's making good power! Just means I'll have to fork out for another inlet and more roller time, great! :( Vince and the guys have been awesome though, can't thank them enough :notworthy:
