  1. Fantastic!!! you guys :) you made me laugh and not think I'm so stupid after all!!! I can still see me having three cups of coffee and maybe a few beers before I get enough guts to start it :)
  2. Thanks Joby, I'll give that a go. Thanks also davidwort, I have much respect for your knowledge :) and you may well be right! and this is what I thought might be happening but wanted to see what your experiances were as I havn't done this before so am unsure what it should feel like. cambelts have had a stigma for me for years and I wanted to do this to put that to sleep!!! Any ways I'll have A VR6 to do soon :) Thanks all again. Hopefully I can let you Know how wimpy I've been when I get another chance to have a go tomorrow:)
  3. Thanks. Volksworld, I,ll take the belt off again tomorrow and check the pulleys, Is there a way of checking the pistons/ valves are in the right place? maybe taking the sparkplugs out and putting a long screwdriver down to check the piston is in the right place (would piston number one be at the top) not sure about the cams being right, where they should be, even if I took the cover off (which I don't really want to do,unless I really have to). just pooping myself I've got the two in the wrong position somehow :( Vince
  4. Hi Volksworld13. I am a mechanical engineer by trade, so should know a bit :) I followed the Passat bentley manual, lined up the crank pulley with the timing mark on the cover and checked it was also lined up with the one on the flywheel, loosened the tensioner and took off the old belt, lined up the timing mark on the cam pulley (this did take a couple of turns to actually find the mark) and it did seem a bit stiff?. Slipped on the new belt whilst checking nothing had moved and then roughly tensioned it, with the twisting method, again checked nothing had moved and then tried to rotate. now s**t scared to even touch it! which is nuts!!!! Vince.
  5. Hi. Guys. I am in the process of changing my camelt, all went fine untill I tried to rotate the engine on the crank pulley after fitting the new belt to make sure the timing marks still lined up. well the crank pulley still turns but the camshaft pulley wont. any ideas what I have screwed up and how I can get this sorted. any info apprieciated, this is the only job i've never attempted on a car as I always knew it would go wrong, somehow :( Cheers Vince.
  6. Sorry should have said, Its the 9a 16v. 'doh'
  7. Hi.all. Happy new year to everyone. :) I want to do my cambelt and have looked through the search but can find a thread that describes the whole process, does anybody know of one and could put a link up to it. or does anybody in the know feel like writing one for the wiki :) Thanks. Best wishes. Vince. :salute:

  10. Hi Tim and all. I was wondering if anybody could clear up an insurance problem for me? My wife,s car was written off last week after being involved in a shunt on the M25,where we came off worst with front and rear damage. The person who hit us in the rear has admitted full responsibility. My wife's insurance company have come up with a figure of compensation for the loss of our car, based on its trade value, this I would readily except if we were at fault . but after doing a very intensive search for comparative models to replace our car with,we have found that we are unable to purchase a replacement with the compensation offered and would have to find at least £1000 extra to be able to purchase a car comparable to the condition of ours before the accident. To do this we are having to consider slightly younger models because there are not any exactly the same age and milage as ours was,for sale at this time. We are being told that these cars cannot be taken into consideration because they are younger, and are know getting a bit shirty. My question is, that if the accident was not our fault, should not ,we have the right to be able to recieve enough compensation to be able to purchase a replacement car as close as is possible to purchase, so that we can continue our lives as we were before the accident, seeing as we were the innocent party, and not be made to feel that we have to justify ourselves, or be made to purchase and drive a lesser model .We drove our particular model because it fitted our way of life, with children and luggage ,etc and was four wheel drive because we live in the country and get snowed in in the winter. We can't get our head round why her insurance company are fighting against us,when ultimately they will be claiming from the person who hit us and their insurance policy? Please tell me if I am being nieve. I know there have been case studies lke ours where the judge has ruled in the claimants favour. do I have to take this to court. My wife's policy was fully comprehensive. Thanks guys for any help on this
  11. Hi. the guide rings are still available, got some about a month ago when I changed my radiator. Think they were about £20 the pair. don't know aout the cowling as mine just got a coat of satin hammerite as was still in good nick. :) Cheers Vince.
  12. Hi. I bought a 'Ring' one from 'Halfords' for £100 has 12v power supply and roadside light and think it has 240 inverter but havn't used that yet. Its really good starts the VR no proplem with power to spare. Here is the web page address. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165629 Cheers Vince.
  13. I think they're pretty cool. don't think you can beat a five spoke ! speically if you got nice clean underneath, brakes, etc. Just my opinion, but then I am around your age

    fuel leak

    Glad I could help :)
  15. Hi. Yes the wire that is connected 'to' the alternator. Don't think much goes any further at that end of the engine?. If it is that wire, which i'm not sure what its for, it would have had to have been cut or pulled quite hard to free it from the loom, to be dangling on the floor!. Goodluck :) Vince.
  16. Hi. Had a look at my 16v,and think it is either the pressure sensor wire for the oil, the one on the right of of the filter housing, but then you would have lights and buzzers going!! But I reckon I found one that is into a connector just like the one you are holding which should be clipped onto the starter motor, and it then travels along insde a loom sleeve around the engine mount back up around the oil cooler and onto the alternator just behind the big gauge wire bolted to the back of it. hope that makes sense and is of help. Cheers. Vince.
  17. Hi. Sorry failed miserably at uploading picture as never tried before :epicfail: But, here are the colours to each plug: Male plug from loom: black with dark green stripe and light green with yellow stripe goes to female plug to pressure switch on drier with the green and blue wires. Second male plug from loom: black with red stripe and brown with orange stripe goes to second female plug to pressure switch on drier with the black and the white wires. hope this makes sense and helps? if not I can try to send you a personal message with an attachment!(reckon I could manage that :D ) good luck with that!.I might be asking you what some of the wires do on the relay end ,as I have one that is not connected to anything? do have printout of wiring diagram. Cheers Vince.
  18. Hi,am working in that area at the moment , will try to post picture,if no one beats me to it. have you changed the drier? as mine is looking rather old and rusty!
  19. Hi. thanks for reply. I have seen that Weitec and AP also do similar kits in more conservative colours and for different prices and was wondering what the difference in quality was between them? as I had heard all companies were part of the same group and they were manufactured alongside each other. I also don't want coilovers on my VR ,as have those on my 16v, and just wanted an improvement over standard on the VR with subtle drop. we'll have to keep looking. Cheers Vince.
  20. Hi. well done she looks awesome. could I ask what suspension you went for in the end? I remember you were asking about kw suspension kits a while ago. in which I was also interested. Thanks.
  21. Hi. all. Just in the middle of major coolant system overhaul, Crack pipe, hoses ,radiator. and am having a major clean and tidy up while front of car is off. while tidying up the looms across the front of the engine(vr6) I have found a white with black line wire with a spade connector on it that wasn't connected to anything? it is taped into a loom along with the wires for the knock sensor and the engine speed sensor. anybody know what its for? was wondering if it was a temperature sender or the like, cause they have spade type connectors, that was disconnected and replaced when the diavia arcon was fitted (badly). just wanted to make sure, before I tuck it away again.Thanks. Vince.

    fuel leak

Hi. I had this when I replaced the fuel pump last year. It was leaking where the plastic fuel lines under the car join the rubber ones in the bay. replaced original crimped hose clamps with screw type fuel line clips(jubilee) this cured my problem. put it down to the new pump putting more pressure out than the failing old one! Car whent faster anyway :D
  23. Hi. alarm gone mental after flat battery!!!!! think mine is the 918,is the reset the same? Can i do the reset palava with the siren disconnected as I am already annoying the neighbours every time I try this? sometimes when I connect the battery there is no activation of alarm but still shows 'activated' on the light on the dash and also car will start?
  24. Thanks for the help guys, No, there is no blue smoke and the wine isn't noticeably louder, Its probably using a half a litre every four to six weeks depending on use, does lots of short school run stuff during week, then longer distance stuff at weekend, loaded to the hilt with our band gear when were gigging . Will try the 5-W40 next oil change. Vince.
