  1. if its the HG, is it serious coinage then? or the piston rings for that matter
  2. the plugs were oiled up a few months ago, one of which was worse than the rest, don't know which one though, the vw specialist just replaced them & told me to keep an eye on them!
  3. my vr came to a juddering halt yesterday with blue smoke bellowing out the exhaust....lots of it.....now i know this ain't good, but how bad will it be? i managed to cosy it home (about 4miles) still with smoke pouring out, let it cool down then checked the oil level which did'nt seem too bad as i was expecting nowt in at all. i rang the guy from my local VAG specialist & he's mentioned...head gasket & piston rings...now i am definately no mechanic but i've got a feeling my wallet is going to suffer :( anyway he says he will come out this afternoon & take a look & a listen....fingers crossed it ain't terminal!!

  5. so sorry to hear that about your dad andy, having lost my mam recently i can understand what you will be going through right now. my thoughts are with you & you family at this sad time. regards andy
  6. very interesting, i especially like the bit about it being 'cheaper to insure 2 cars than 1', i need all my powers of persuasion to make the mrs understand why i want to do this as it goes a bit like this at the moment..."what the bl@#dy hell do you need 2 cars for you can only drive 1 at a time"  women eh !!
  7.   hope you have given your interior the steam clean treatment :)
  8. i am swaying towards looking for another motor, i have had both the golf mk 2 & 3 8v, loved the mk2 & even the mk3 was pretty good. get the c tucked up in a nice cosy garage & save putting on those thousands of miles on as i use it every day & probably manage between 12-13k miles a year. was thinking of sorting something out with the insurance company where i say run the corrado for 6 months & the other one for the same, 6 months tax on each aswell. yeah i know what you mean goldie i work right in the centre of newcastle & have staff parking so i actually go up that road everyday & have to battle my way round the toon...
  9. i'm thinking of getting myself a car to see me through the harshest of the winter months, maybe a golf mk2/3 valver upto about £1500 & get my vr tucked up in the garage for the winter, or on the other hand i could lavish the cash on my c on maybe a new suspension set up & some nice alloys??? pro's & con's for both really, any thoughts on what i should do or if anyone else runs a winter car & how that works out for them i'd love to hear about it!!

very true mate, its just a bit daunting pulling your pride & joy to pieces when you don't really know what you're doing!! i think you're dead right again about replacing all the above parts & as you say at the very least these can be eliminated & piece of mind for a while from them. i just need some friendly sole to show me the way then there'll be no stopping me....munich is'nt that far away ..is it

unfortunately i am a mechanical/electrical retard co checking themostat switches & different clocks is'nt really on the cards for me....not exactly an ideal combination for someone with a passion for 13 year old perfomance cars i know   will pass all this valuable info on to someone with a bit more skill than me under the bonnet!!

dr_mat everything was as i said until today  on a journey back home this morning the water temp shot through the roof, coolant was all fine....no fans though. just been to pick it up tonight & it just about got to 90degrees when i got home again checked & no fans let it run up tp 110 & still no fans, turned the engine off & the fans kicked in  could it be t/stat open as you previously said, temp senders us, electrical gremlins or all of the above, could they be connected or coincedence all going together...? oh & forgot to mention my speedo keeps intermittently go off as of today aswell

    low oil temp

i'm afraid i need to ressurect this thread...been to my local vw specialist yesterday but can't get it seen till next thursday, but he seemed to think it was more likely a problem with the electrics than the engine, but after today i'm not sure....drove about 10 miles to see my dad, same thing low water temp low oil temp, fan comes on after stopping the engine, came out about an hour later after driving for about 5 mins noticed the water temp flying up so stopped at a garage & the coolant level was fine , sat for about 15 mins & started back up & the water temp was still sky high, limped on a bit & pulled over & have left it on the side of the road about 7 miles from home. while sitting for the mrs to pick me up (30mins) i started up again & still the temp went straight to the top...should it not have cooled down a bit in that time even??? sorry to go on a bit but i'm well unhappy especially where i've had to leave it, not exactly one of the nicest area in newcastle!!
  17. yeah thats what i thought too. looks like the coilpack jobby then :D
  18. hey thats brilliant steve @, thats half the dealers prices inc. postage, i'm sure the VAG ones are the same make! one question though....how do i know which ones to order distributor/coil pack as mine is a 93 vr  , infact 2 questions...do i need a specific tool for removal & fitting? what about magnecor? any good? cheapest place to get them? cheers
  19. need some new leads, been to the stealers & was quoted £140 for my vr!!! :gag: what are the other alternatives but want to keep the quality, love to hear any views on what you've got, how they are & how much? cheers

would that be expensive to replace bearing in mind i definately won't be doing it...will it be causing damage if i keep using it before its done?

it normally takes a good few miles to start moving up and never really goes much if any above 80 infact it moves between 70 & 80ish most of the time. i'm going to halfrauds soon to get some oil been reading an oil thread & a few recomendations for gtx 15w 40 high mile stuff,my motor's done 117k what dya reckon & do you think this might be part cause of getting no oil temp reading?...by the way thanks for thinking about this anyway. :) just thought about it & not long had my car back because it was running crap & apparently my plugs were covered in oil, had them changed & told to keep an eye on them, running well now apart from the temp. problem, related do you think?

the water temp has stayed fairly much the same as normal around 80 degrees...although saying that is that normal because its never been over that since i've had it, about 4 months, even in traffic as far as i can remember. could it have anything to do with the oil level as i've just checked it & its just on min. mark?

    low oil temp

yep, the last couple of days since i've noticed the oil temp the fans have been kicking in as soon as the the engine is switched OFF not before....bit weird like. i have had a check on the wiring as far as i can see & it looks ok to me, mind normally the only time i lift the bonnet up is to fill the washer bottle up....so i definately don't know my way around an engine bay

i've got a vw specialist just around the corner, i presume they would have one but everytime i go there it takes about a fortnight to get get it booked in, other than that i'm a bit snookered as far as vag- com is concerned :( i was hoping it was just a fault in the mfa but with the fan kicking in i'm thinking not....hope i'm not cooking something !!!
