Biggerbigben - mates 'Project Lambo Killer' .. update Oct 09

Is that all you're going to show us?! You are a tease! -
Can't wait for the R to come out. 8) :D
-
Short answer? Yes. I want to keep this car as standard as I can really. Mainly because not many other people have. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing but someone has to keep it as VW intended I feel. :D I know it's only a counter weight or whatever but it might as well stay there. Got loads of bits ready to go on at the weekend. Got all the bits to overhaul the front brakes and steering rack. And I stole another one of these from work today....
-
Oh cool, that's not bad! Mind you me and Steve (supercharged) were thinking last night that there isn't really much to a bottom end. Still I had visions of the bearings being ridiculous money.
-
Thanks for all the positive comments guys. Really appreciate it! :D Threat not gallanting young Sir Toad of Winchester. Ye olde steering column is coming out. There was always too much play in the steering for my liking so I want to get the column out and inspect it for crapness and overhaul as necessary. I see what you're saying Pete_Griff, would have been better to do it all in one go. But it won't be too much bother with the engine removed as you say and sticking the wish bones on with the frame in place will be easy too. Another update on Sunday!

I can't help but to not un-agree with that I'm telling a mod on you. You're deliberately trying to antaganize me in to an argument. I totally disagree with that kind of behaviour. Or any other kind of behaviour for that matter.

My G60 is exactly like the one pictured. March 91 registration.

After a bit of torque and copious thread lock the sub frame is on. The new ARB bushes were a reassuringly tight fit. Can't wait to try out the handling when it's done. Also today I tidied up the loom and painted the calipers, carriers, hubs, and drive shafts. :D Need to sort out some new brake lines next.

I disagree with everything that has been said so far.

Who knows what it had done! I know soooo much about this car now. It's had a really colourful past! But I quite like it. It adds to the character of it. 8) I have the name of the first owner and he was putting 20k a year on it and owned it for three years. So when it went for it's first MOT it was actually on 60,000 miles but the cert says 20,000! I think the fact that it was clocked is the reason why it never went back to VW for a service after that. It had its first and second service at the supplying dealer but that's all. It also explains why the original service book is gone (the one in the pack is a replacement with no stamps in it!) and there are no receipts from the first owner. After that it's really just the history you can piece together from all the invoices and stuff. I've not noticed anything about the replacement wings and respray so that is still a mystery and will probably stay that way! The work was obviously carried out by the supplying dealer (650) so it must have been done about 15 years ago. Amazing that sticker has stayed there all that time!

And you guys are saying that most of the comments are fair? The engine was revolutionary for the time, and the Corrado is still raved over by some of the most respected car magazines out there.. a 15 year old Cavalier or Corsa aint going to be getting the same kind of love. Best to just ignore it mate. Reading that reminds me why I visit only two forums....
-
Works for me.
-
There are always quite a few things to do in the next 12 months when you have a Corrado!

I have a day off tomorrow! Picking up the stuff from the powder coaters. I've just finished cleaning up the calipers ready for paint tomorrow. Need to clean up the hubs and carriers next. Got some new tie rods, boots, and ends coming tomorrow ready to go on to the steering rack and some new bolts and screws for the arch liners. :D With any luck I'll be able to but up some pictures of me actually putting something back together tomorrow! :D 8)

Yep, should defo have been sealed to the car. So even if it didn't have the sticker on still I would have known they'd been replaced. Whoever did this spray job was a bodge merchant anyhow going by the amount of overspray and orange peel. Dealer 650 on the sticker is the same dealer that supplied and serviced the car. I forget exactly where it was now. Think it was in Wales. The other thing as well that I've found out is that my car was clocked. I did an HPI check and it said there was a mileage discrepancy but didn't give any more information than that. Now I have access to Dialog I can see that it went in for a service in 1993 with a recorded mileage of 40,000 at which point it disappears from VWs radar. I have in my possession the very first MOT certificate which records the mileage a year later in 1994 to be 20,000. So I'm guessing as it has a digital clock that it's swapped clocks at some point with a scrapper or something or had replacement clocks that haven't been recorded properly in the history. It was doing 20k a year from new for the first two years at least so my 120,000 mile G60 is potentially a 160,000 mile G60. Not that it really matters now anyway!

Don't tell me. I don't want to know. It's probably best that I find out after I've stripped it all down otherwise I might be put off from doing it!
-
I'd keep your eye out for a pair of tornado pink wings on the forum. I wouldn't want to put rusty bits back on. At the very least, wire wheel the rust off, stick some rust killer on and whack a funk load of underseal on them. They may be salvageable in the short term. Putting the old ones back on is not ideal. But as long as I clean them up and seal them properly no lasting damage will be done. Hopefully it'll only be for another couple of months after the rest of the car is finished. Not yet bud. Bit scared to if I'm honest! :pale:
-
As long as you all wait for my car to be finished! I'm sick off missing out on things all the time. :(
-
Cheers dude, I'm really enjoying the work. Think once the loom is tidied up it will make a huge difference to the bay. I have Wednesday off so will finish cleaning the arches and bay, finish the calipers (got some matt black caliper paint) and hopefully tidy up the loom then. :D And find some more pictures.... Yep, defo. Not right now though. Just going to refit them and worry about them later. I can't afford to start getting things sprayed at the moment. I have an engine to rebuild which is my priority money wise! Probably won't move onto the paintwork in a big way until next year at which point I'll replace the wings.
-
Yeah, the wings came off no problems at all. Guessing that's because they are replacement ones.... Doesn't appear to be any damage to anything but the inside of the wings are rusty as hell. Check it out: Was going to take them to a bodyshop to get sorted but they are beyond redemption. Will be looking at some replacements I think once I've saved up for the repsray I want. There is overspray everywhere. :( Oh well whatever happened couldn't have been too bad as the car has never been written off.
-
Didn't get as much done as I had hoped. But pleased with what I did get done. Started to clean up the arches and the bay. Not concourse by any stretch but a vast improvement. Here are some pictures: So.... This is my life.... Again.... :( More evidence of an accident on the back of the offside wing. I'm guessing B/SHOP means bodyshop. And I'm guessing it's not the kind of bodyshop where one would buy ethically tested cleansing fluids. Started on one of the calipers too. She's called 'Pure Dee' - clue is in the filename. Google is your friend.. (if you turn off the Safe Search!) Err, one of the Mods told me. Err, yeah, that's it.. Liking your work. :norty:
-
More pics please. :) Mate, this my rebuild thread. Of course there will be pictures. Maybe even some pictures of my car!
-
Agreed. My car is red too and in desperate need of a respray but that's the least of my worries at the moment! I still use my front splitter. I'd rather scrape that than my sump. I do spend a lot of time wincing though.... :pale:
-
Which means I can work on the car! I plan to remove the last few things from the bay, tidy up the engine loom, clean up and paint the calipers, clean the bay, remove front struts and clean the wheel arches, and clean up and paint the hubs. Should be time for all that lot before I meet up with some friends in Ipswich for the afternoon. Got a bag full of replacement bolts ready for when the sub frame is back too. :D I love Sundays! :luvlove:
