Yeah I'm definitely lairy, I can't imagine a decent excuse for the history being missing?? And if it was a legit reason, surely the current owner would have asked when HE bought it? I think you guys may be right, it's a lovely example but I'd rather get something perhaps off you guys here in the forums where at least I know it's been cared for.

Ha ha yeah! Well he wants £3500 for it, which is cheap but not a giveaway - I've seen well-kept VR6s go on here for a similar amount *with* FSH. Part of me thinks - you have no idea when bits are going to go wrong anyway, even with a car with history. The other thinks, the chains have almost definitely not been done (although I'd have to assume they're not overly noisy or the guys at Awesome GTI would have picked up on it) so I'd have to factor these in if I was planning on keeping the car for a good few years (which I would)... ideally I was looking for a VR where these large service items had been done (with receipts to prove) as it's just one less thing to worry about isn't it? Ooh it's a tricky'un!

Hi guys, general bit of advice if you don't mind; There's a C on Autotrader at the moment, VR6 on 105k with leather, air con etc etc. Just rang the guy up and he says he's got no history with it at all (god knows how). He says he bought it nine months ago, taking a bit of a gamble and took it straight to Awesome GTI who gave it a clean bill of health, apart from new rear discs and pads and water pump. The air con is apparently not functioning at the moment due to a couple of splits in the pipes. So my question is - would you consider buying a car with no history such as this, or would you not touch it with a bargepole? I'm not just concerned about the potential problems, but also the resale value. Thoughts?

Yeah I wonder about this all the time and I'm always on the lookout for cars I'd like to have ideally. The only things that look at all interesting is a Fiat Coupe 20vt (although I'm well aware about the horrendous maintenance costs), or an R32. I quite liked the look of the old Civic Type R's but I've never driven one. Basically I can't afford a modern car that's as fast as I'd like, so it's back to the well-made classics!

I secretly hate Porsche wheels on VWs. I think they look rubbish, apart from anything else! But as with everything else, if people like em, more power to em I guess...

Why? IIRC Corrados weren't built in Wolfsburg, so why do people insist on encrusting them with Wolfsburg badges, door pins, gear knobs etc? It really annoys me!

It was great telly, although I don't trust anything they do anymore - does anyone really believe they actually made it to France in the Nissank?

Hello mate, welcome to the forum! Not an expert by any means, but if you buy a VR that's already had it's engine rebuilt, they're not a lot more expensive than non-rebuilt cars and you won't have to worry about it. Similarly, make sure the cam chains have been done already - they can go on forever but having them already done is one less thing to worry about within your ownership at least! From all the VRs I've seen they don't seem to suffer badly from rust at all, I think inner wings is a spot prone to a bit of rot but easy to check. Petrol wise, I think you'll be averaging just under 30mpg so work that out - could be worse. Generally it seems the VRs that are left have been largely enthusiast-owned and respected, having always been under the boy-racer radar and hence not ragged too much. Seems like a good time to buy as prices are very low as well! That said, if you want a peachy Mk2 Golf GTI 16v, buy mine! :D

You guys with hibernating cars - how often do you turn them over/start them/get them up to temp? What problems can you expect if you don't?

Thing I don't like about new cars, is that they're too quiet and polite, and you feel totally disconnected from the actual gearbox/engine. Which is great if you do a lot of motorway miles or whatever, but if you like to have fun driving they seem to be somewhat lacking. That said, I've not driven an R32 or anything particularly new and fast!

Yup, the 16v engine is a treat! For me, though I want more power, especially as I'm moving to a heavier car. You can't really lose - G60 is tuneable and sporty, VR is powerful and sounds wicked. Both cars, for all their subtle cosmetic differences, look fantastic.

I'm keeping an open mind tbh. Low mileage, leather would be nice, the usual. I'm actually prepared to spend a bit more to get a C with a rebuilt engine or extensive work already done. I keep wavering between VR or G60, I can see the appeal of both - so I'm pretty much looking for a good example of a Corrado regardless of the engine. A bit like if you're having a baby and people ask if you want a girl or a boy and you say "I don't mind as long as it's healthy" :D

Wish I had a garage, so I could keep one car SORNed over winter while driving something I didn't care too much about, but I don't! Applied to the council for one of their garages just behind my house but that could take years! :(

Was driving my Mk2 Golf GTI around today after a engine flush and oil change and it's really smooth, tight, feels great for a car that's done 177k (!) but I was wondering how it was to drive when it rolled out of the factory, you know - what was the pickup like, without any cabin rattles/squeaks etc that I take for granted? What do you guys think about your C's? Anybody think they've got theirs back to a condition comparable to when new? Anyone think theirs now outperforms the original vehicle?

Yep, I was driving a colleagues Mondeo TDCI and while it was boring and plasticky inside, you could tell it was put together pretty well and with a bit of abuse got fairly interesting!

Hmm so are these laws new then?? I was thinking of getting some new (banded) plates for the GTI, as I saw another Mk2 with them on and they looked surprisingly good. Where's the best place to get 100% legit plates from?

Why are there so many top Corrados on either the south coast or Scotland??
