  1. I've been finding 199lbft of schrick-induced goodness rips the wheels off the tarmac in 2nd gear too in this weather ...
  2. But the law dictates the *exact* font that must be used. German plates don't use it, therefore are not legal ... (Whether they do or don't use "crazy illegible fonts" is not important.)
  3. Sounds more like you're spinning your bloody wheels to me, it's a bit slippery out there!!!
  4. Spooky! http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/29 ... st_fiasco/ "..Mercedes engineers knew the radar technology wouldn't work in the steel warehouse.." I may not have been 100% right about the reason (not that we yet know the true reason), but it sounded too stupid to be completely legit.

    406 coupe

Ignoring the above OT, a lot of reviews said that the 406 coupe was best with the big diesel engine... I really like the styling of the 406 coupe, sooo much better than all those other boxes out there.. It would be a potential swap from the VR, if it weren't so damn loooong ..
  6. This story mostly sounds like a troll to me .. I can believe the crackdown on illegal spacing/font etc etc, but I can't believe the taking private plates away from you thing.
  7. And that's thanks to the variable inlet design, not the 24 valves! (God can you imagine how much it costs to recon the head on a 24v ..??)

    air flow meter

Careful now, you don't wanna go suggesting Vince is fallible round here, they'll tar and feather you before kicking you out of town .. :) Comments in other thread...

    air flow meter

300 miles on £60 is not that bad ... Particularly as you're counting the RR session in the middle, no? What's the MFA saying for mpg overall? Weirdo thing is you're showing good torque, and poor bhp. What's your torque curve/power curves look like?
  10. Mine didn't rattle. Till I put some tapes in the glove box ... :)
  11. Your camber angle has not been checked, I take it.. When you lower the car, the camber needs properly re-setting.
  12. .. round and round this thread goes ... where we stop? ... well, we don't ...
  13. Don't know about aftermarket ones (I HAVE heard of a couple of aftermarket ones - one from supersprint I think?), but even the VW one is about £300 + VAT ..
  14. Plus a few of the people who run silly amounts lower will attest to how much extra strain this puts on CV joints and driveshafts! Minor drops won't make much difference though.
  15. No, old VWs spend the summer blowing decrepit hoses due to pressure build-up instead of letting you down in the winter..! ;)
  16. In that case, they're muppets! :) But I'll bet this whole thing was set up by a bunch of marketing execs.. The techies who designed the system and know it's limitations probably never even knew it was happening till they got utterly embarrassed by the press coverage, despite knowing it wouldn't work under those circumstances. Anyway, Merc should be used to major pre-release embarassments, following the A-class debacle..
  17. The sensors probably rely on some RELATIVE range data. You're in a building, the furthest distance it can see is too low for it to get a decent fix on what's "far enough". Anyone who drives without thinking in fog deserves everything they get. It's the poor sod they drive into the back of I feel sorry for.
  18. "You get these kids, maybe 14 or 15, wearing hoodies and causing a nuisance." I blame the hoodies ...
  19. You have no reason to do any of the sort, simply call your insurer and/or the police, and they will trace the bits and catch the miscreants ... or something ...
  20. 500-700 ohms, according to bentley. But I would doubt it's this. Crank sensor probs usually result in a non-running engine, not a badly-running engine..
  21. Can't remember now, but I thought the Golf VRs of that age got the later-style (far superior by all accounts) solid polymer chain tensioner?
  22. Erm.. I would say they're more at the mercy of the marketeers working for manufacturers .. The scientists generally aren't in the business of misdescribing things..
  23. Do you consistently get this shift, no matter what the road surface is like? Checked your tyre pressures recently??
  24. Good point- you say it doesn't happen when accelerating or when in neutral, but does it also only happen when you're braking? I had graunchy noises at low speeds due to iffy ABS sensors on an old Cavalier once. The ABS was kicking in for no apparent reason.
