    Steering rack

What's it worth to you? Recon units have short warranties, and there's lot of stories of them failing again in 6 months. But if done *right* i.e. all new moving parts and all new seals, a recon unit should be just as good as a new one. Reason I'm so vague is that a brief description of the symptoms isn't really enough to decide what the problem is. Looseness can obviously come from anywhere in the system, but notchiness usually indicates rack itself - particularly if it's in a particular spot each time. The garage can't know one of the teeth is chipped on the rack, you can't see the rack itself. That's just their assumption. A fair one, if you have notchiness or looseness at a particular spot in the steering..
  2. Have you replaced the lambda?
  3. No, buy a G60. Ha. If you're worried about economy buy a 2.0 8v. Then lament your lack of power at your leisure.
  4. It's when you get a bill like that for a single visit that you ought to have your head examined.. Um.. (Well half of it WAS for the Schrick manifold ... ;) )
  5. Hold on, I'm talking crapola again - you said you'd got B12+ voltage issues, not valve issues...? Right well it's gotta be wiring/relays/fuses/earthing then.
  6. You're right that it's highly unlikely to be TWO ABS controllers that are faulty, in the same way (they both showing the same error code)? It's much more likely to be the pump/valve unit. Much more expensive (though I found a web site indicating that many of these were failing "early" and offering recon units at a shade under 500 notes).
  7. I don't add up any more, Jim. It spoils the party...
  8. Four figures? It's not "stinging" unless it reaches the four-figure range...
  9. The suspension travel is for the evil potholes and speed ramps that swarm around my area...
  10. It's facing up a slope, so it's standing up on the rear suspension because of the handbrake slightly. It's all standard suspension, nowt wrong with it... Back end is actually pretty stable with new shocks, bushes and bump stops.
  11. It was so muddy that as I was driving along (on a ROAD mind), the steering was constantly light (no grip), the wheels kept spinning on the slightest application of the throttle, and there was a stream of mud running down the sides of the screen where the (lupo) wipers managed to scrape it off the middle of the screen. And as for the headlights (no street lights on this road): uprated looms and +50% lamps are no bloody use when there's an inch thick coating of mud on the glass are they!? It was an interesting trip, I can tell you.. :)
  12. And I thought everyone ignored me.. Hehe.. It's all mine mate, every nut and every bolt. And yes I WASHED THE BLOODY CAR! :) I actually had to stick a sign on it the other day that said "this is a car", just so some passing farmer didn't think it was a field and try to plough it...
  13. Miaow. I still like it. And art is in the eye of the beholder, anyway. ;) Enough off-topic bitching for today, I think.. :)
  14. It's a picture of a transporter isn't it? It's a dirty VW grill on my C. Cars get dirty, tough shit, life's like that. I quite liked the picture too... And I *did* wash the car afterwards. That's why I took the picture in the first place. Dunno why Kev has such a problem with the mud on MY car ffs.. If you wanna wash it you're more than welcome...
  15. I know, Vince is like everywhere all the time in that place. Given that he's always either answering the phone or available if asked, you have to wonder how he finds time to do any actual technical work aswell...!

    Oil level on VR

Yes it's true, Corrado owners are not *quite* anal enough to want brand new Corrado owner's manuals to go with their brand new badges and trim items. (It's no wonder VW are running out of spares when the owners are so damn picky!!)
  17. Jim is confused I think. He's talking about the gear STICK end, not the BOX end... But he's a mod, so he can edit all our posts and make it look like he knew what he was talking about anyway... ;)
  18. "Looks like a duplicate post to me doctor, is there anything we can do for it? No, I'm afraid it's terminal. Best to put it down now, humanely...."
  19. Ahem, they're £130 + VAT. The standard item is £50+VAT. Not certain on the "last longer" front either - they need the insert replacing periodically. That said, I've got one... :)
  20. *** waits for Kev to swing into action with the Vibratechnics sales pitch...
  21. I have an LUK on my VR. They're fine too, also do OEM for VW. The books usually reckon on three hours for a clutch replacement..
  22. Do you have 30% more power than standard? (And even the standard VR clutch is happy with up to 250-270lbft, so you'd need to be running serious power before requiring an uprated clutch..)
  23. SACHS is what it left the factory with. What's special about the black diamond one?
  24. Sure you're not stuck with just 1st and 2nd?
