  1. Hmm, how much would a new VR6 have cost if I hadn't found and replaced your dodgy front caliper bolt, eh? Yeah, gave it a good blast on the way home - drives really really well... and still got 34mpg! 8) Yes, that's right, officially twice the fuel economy compared to one month ago, and arguably twice the fun to drive.  *happy sigh* I love my C
  2. Fitted the driver's side door handle repair kit supplied by daves16v at the MOT garage and got the car re-re-tested - it passed! Total cost was around £450 including a new lambda, new cat, two new wishbones, one CV joint boot, a wheel alignment, labour and a handle repair... Was totally worth it as she is driving even better than when I bought her last July :D :D :D
  3. Emissions results: Fast idle at 2850rpm: CO = 0.01% (pass is HC = 12ppm (pass is Lambda = 1.01 (pass is >0.97 Natural idle at 880rpm: CO = 0.01% (pass is PWNED! Whole MOT did cost me about £450 though, but it feels good to have got all those bits sorted and have the car running better than when I bought it last July :D
  4. CV boot fixed, and just fitted the repaired handle... they just need to re-re-MOT it  It's still at the garage but I had a quick look at the new emissions printout and those bad gases got owned hard! Numbers to follow... Just hope that the obviously 'detail oriented' MOT inspector is feeling generous this evening and I don't get a phone call saying "About your car..." :pale:
  5. I did manage to get my hands on a password-locked PDF of the Bentley, but it was limited in what you could do with it... :? So, I've just ordered a copy of the printed Bentley, will scan it using the work's nice scanner and then get it into full Acrobat software to do optical character recognition on the pages to reduce the PDF filesize, and create a searchable database of words and terms :D A bit like the CD but working, portable, and able to search and print pages at A3 size or larger. The indexed and optimised PDF will end up being kept on my laptop, plus I will have a hard copy for those rainy days when you need to be under the car... 8)
  6. OK, a really leftfield suggestion... Could it be that the ribbed V belt for the charger is slipping and 'shrieking' (for want of a better term) when you're caning it? Reasons being: i) At WOT, there is no recirculated air to 'help' the charger to spin, so it is being forced by the engine to compress air without any assistance (unlike when it is on part throttle) EDIT: your sig says you have a deleted boost return - so your charger will always be spinning without assistance from pre-compressed air... scratch part i) ! ii) If your oil feed is/was poor to the charger, it might have further internal friction to overcome as well as the air's resistance to being compressed iii) If you don't have a wide V belt (often fitted with the 68mm upgrade) or worse still no toothed pulley + belt, the friction/resistance of the charger to spinning could exceed the friction offered by the belt, causing it to slip and chirp at you? These would all be factors when driving hard with your foot to the floor. Perhaps the change in oil (and filter) has improved things now, but they may reoccur in time...? Just some ideas in case it does happen again and the oil pump is not the cause  My money was on the wastegate initially, as it makes a sound like an old kettle with a whistle on the spout :D Would love to know what it is when you've nailed it! :thumb right:
  7. And you know you've got to call it "The Legend of Jon Burgundy" Heyo!
  8. It's official - daves16v is a legend :) The repair kit for both door handles was waiting on my doorstep this evening *win!* Will fix the driver's side tomorrow for the sake of the MOT, and will do the passenger's side as a precautionary measure in the next few days. Also have a pair of handle repairs on the way for my good bro, boost monkey, just to save him the hassle! May just be the first mod he does after collecting the new C... 8)
  9. Recently got a Milltek stainless cat back system fitted by JMR in Littlehampton for about £320 including all new hangers and rubbers :) Then realised that the cat was also duff (failed MOT emissions) so bought a 'stock' (400cpsi) replacement cat from http://www.sportcats.co.uk It was delivered in 2 working days, made from stainless steel and has good solid construction, and at £125 delivered, was a no-brainer compared to the £485 VW wanted!  Passed MOT emissions beautifully *phew* 8) Edit: I like the OE style of the Milltek's oval tip, and it was pretty quiet but with a nice deep note - can't really hear it so well now my airbox is drilled!
  10. Good news and bad news: Got the local garage to fit the new cat and lambda - passed emissions this time  :D apparently the original lambda was duff and the resultant overfuelling killed the cat (and I always thought it was curiosity did that!) But it failed the MOT re-test due to a broken driver's door handle  I have a repair kit for both sides on order from daves16v, I'm just awaiting delivery... Also failed on a split CV boot, not sure which side, but that's being replaced now. So, looks like it just needs a fixed handle, and it can be road legal again  Then there's road tax due at the end of the month :( Expensive times, but I'm glad she'll have a new lease of life
  11. Andy, Please drop me from the list - I have made up a kit myself, mainly because it's something I could do to console myself after a few expensive problems occurred! I can fully sympathise with the hassle involved in making these kits, I must've spent over 20 hours designing and wiring up mine (although it is a dual circuit that will upgrade the headlights and the spots)... Will make final connections as soon as it stops raining! If your kits take nearly as long as mine did, then I would consider charging a bit more for them! Cheers.
  12. Hmm, following some minor but expensive bad luck with my C recently, I decided to crack on with the headlight wiring upgrade, which I started a couple of weeks ago to give me something positive to do! Finally got around to checking the voltage at the headlight connector: 6.9V on sidelights and 10.7V on full headlight (the voltage for the spots wasn't much better!) Although it was raining on and off today I fitted the unit, all boxed up and watertight, to the O/S of the radiator air ram (inside the engine bay) and ran the power connections across the top of the rad to the battery. This is a dual upgrade, so has two complete circuits (relays, fuses, etc.) allowing both the headlights and the spots to be improved :D Didn't want to cut into the existing loom in the rain though, will wait for a dry-er day  All leads are carefully tie wrapped out of the way for now, and as I'm now running the Philips Extreme bulbs, the headlights are acceptable. I can't wait to see how bright they will be with all the battery's 14V across them  8)
  13. Parts ordered from the local dealers, about £50 all in... [Edit: Thats for the long, under-body send and return fuel lines, the in-bay ones are about £10 each] Just need some time to fit them :D
  14. OK, pretty dull this, but if anyone replaces their windscreen and the old screen catches and breaks the headlining trim strip, you won't be able to get another from the dealers. VW part code: 535 867 551 (colour 1DH) Internal headlining plastic trim strip, grey. Like I said, dull.
  15. WE fitted the N/S wishbone  Credit where it's due I guess, but you're right, it was a team effort - equal amounts of genius and idiocy on both sides, eh bro?  Ha ha ha! That's funny. You're a funguy :D So I'm told  Must get you a forensics all-in-one waterproof - it'd suit you 8) Needed 3 showers? Dude, you should use Swarfega for shower gel, it's super fresh and exfoliatory! D*mn straight, skippy. 8)
  16. Fitted the N/S wishbone today, plus flushed and refilled the oil, and checked all the sparks were OK. The old bolts in the wishbone were pretty rusted and needed some beef to get them shifted, then the new wishbone was awkward to slip into the subframe mountings - I recommend that anyone going to do this puts the car up on a lift, as doing it at knee level is hard work! That took about 5 hours in total, outside in the steady drizzle :( (note to self: get a garage, preferably heated) The replacement cat arrived yesterday, but didn't have the time or the bolts/gasket to fit it today - once again it looks like uber-oxidised bolts will need some attention from a hacksaw. Think I might have to get my local garage to do the cat and a partial MOT on it on Monday :)
  17. Had a long list of MOT-related things to attempt today, but due to inclement weather and some seriously stubborn bits of metal (mainly rusted bolts), my bro and I ended up achieving: 1. Oil flush and change, 4L of Synta Silver put in with OE filter. 2. Removed rusty bolts for N/S wishbone and replaced it/them with brand spanking new units (rubber bush had split that side) - it was a PITA to fit back in, and we gave up on replacing the ball joint as well because the retaining bolt was molecularly bonded to the back of the hub! 3. Checked plugs for signs of a leaky injector (all were perfect), in case recent emissions failure was also due to excess petrol. Noticed the gearbox was very sticky both before and after the work... Need to check the oil.
  18. Anyone ever done (or seen) a 4wd Corrado conversion? Synchro transplant from a Rallye perhaps?
  19. [Edit: see Supercharged's post below for full 16V and VR6 info] Hi folks, Just recently bought this OE Bosch Lambda probe for my '92 G60 for £85 including next day postage, having been quoted £125 by VW. Wasn't able to find any reference to its part number on the Forum, so thought I'd post pics here for information: Bosch part number: 0 258 003 165 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdf13012008(001).jpg[/attachment:3bds4c16] 4-wire lambda probe (power, signal, screen and earth): 13012008(005).jpg[/attachment:3bds4c16] Hope that helps someone in future
  20. Why yes they are  Grrr. :bad-words: Well.... done... mate. Very... happy... for... you. :x
  21. You think I should stick to a normal cat because it will last longer than a sports cat? I get the impression that the sports cats are cheaper than OE because they have fewer cells inside (hence they flow better), but as a result they tend to wear out faster? Thoughts & opinions welcome
  22. :( Failed MOT on emissions - Daz at G-Werks did a great job of tuning the engine to get rid of the overfuelling, it really feels way more responsive and powerful now. Unfortunately, it looks as though that period of too much fuel has knackered the cat. Pants. :| I had the following CO emissions: Fast idle 1 = 4.5% (limit is 0.3%!) Fast idle 2 = 7.5% Slow idle = 4.1% (limit is 0.5%) Will order a sports cat tomorrow, probably Milltek to match the shiny new exhaust :D Also failed MOT on the N/S wishbone bush which has too much play in it. O/S was an advisory for the same reason... Two new wishbones with integral bushes on order, and will replace the ball joints at the same time - much easier and cheaper than buying bushes and trying/paying someone to fit them. Right now, to cheer myself up, I am sorting out a wiring upgrade for my headlights and spots. Biggest problem is working out where to put the fuses and relays where they will be reasonably accessible and out of the elements... Will probably do the wishbones and get the cat fitted and re-MOT'd on Friday, as I have the day off.
  23. Hi daves16v, My driver's side handle did the dreaded 'crack-plink' thing last night - the MOT was at 11 this morning  Please PM me PayPal details (I want to replace both sides please) and I will get payment to you asap  Thanks mate, Andy.
  24. Quick update following a day trip to G-Werks and JMR: John fitted a new Milltech stainless cat-back exhaust system with new brackets and rubbers (and gave the old girl a good steam clean -thanks!) Darren diagnosed my overfuelling problem and tuned the engine back to rude health :D A quick test drive confirmed that it was back to its usual responsive characteristics 8) He then stood around with me and my bro talking about suspension, gearboxes, engine tuning, etc. for a good hour after the work was done  Thanks Daz - you are the man! Looks like it will now pass the MOT on Saturday *crosses fingers* Watch this space...
