My new Job working for a Lamborghini GT3 team

Yeah it's really cool, had a great time last weekend despite pulling 12-hour days (which I'm told are short ) Smelling like rubber/petrol/fumes all the time isn't so great though. They got the better of me on Sunday and I had a raging migraine for most of the day, but had to soldier on and take down the awning in classic Scottish rain which was about 5 degrees! Whilst we're not racing, I'll be helping out at the base in High Wycombe. They have just moved out of the workshop which is shared with the Lamborghini Service side of their business and into new bespoke premises across the road which has enough space for 5 cars and bays, much better! Couple of the guys have met Jay Kay as he gets his cars serviced by them. That's kinda cool :D -
My new Job working for a Lamborghini GT3 team

lolololol! :camp: Two, we're hardcore :D Well at the mo I'm the wheel man (in a non-getaway driving kinda way) so I make sure the tyres are in good nick, the wheels are clean, they are balanced properly and have to make sure we have enough slicks and wets for each track session. I also measure tyre pressure and tyre temperatures at pit-stops and relay the info to the team boss. Avoiding smoking 8-pot front calipers is another thing I managed to learn quickly! Sometimes you have to have gloves on just to change the wheels cos the heat radiates out of the brakes to the hubs and to the wheels themselves  In the paddock, I pump out the fuel tank and refill it so we know exactly how much fuel we have for each session/race, plus help the mechanics do the tracking and toe-in etc on the car and generally do other helpful stuff really. In a non-bitter kind of way, I'm actually more mechanically minded than the 2nd Mechanic on the car, but he's the guy who got me into the job as I know him from uni so I guess I should leave the hierarchy as it is! Hoping to be able to do more stuff as I work for them more, interesting seeing the suspension geometry on a supercar though. -

British GT Championship - Knock Hill

LOL, some of us don't HAVE to centre of attention all the time Andy! My job thread -
Dear all, Yes it is true, I have been employed by Team Modena (Website) part-time as a race engineer although being the new boy I am mainly doing basic stuff at the moment. My first job was last weekend at Knock Hill for the Scottish round of the British GT Championships. It was a really good experience and even though I've had plenty of access to pitlanes and paddocks before through various friends, nothing really prepared me for how hectic a race weekend can be...I mean they only properly race for one hour a day, so how hard can it be? The team have the Lambo which races GT3 and will be getting another one shortly so they can run 2 cars each race. AFAIK, I will be working on the brand new one. The Car: Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 Engine: 5l V10 Power: 530hp. ^^ This is the one I was working on last weekend. (For those of you who are following the team, this is the lease car from Reiter Engineering which we used for the weekend as our Gallardo which rolled at Oulton Park is not quite back together yet.) Modena also run an Aston Martin DBR9 (this thing is the sex :notworthy: ) which races in LMS and GT1 IIRC. The Car: Aston Martin DBR9 Engine: 6l V12 Power: 600hp. I think I will be doing Rockingham at the end of the month, and then be working for them full-time after that for the duration of the summer. :salute:

Way to let the cat out of the bag dude! I'll start a new thread.

You're really gonna have to explain the campness, I just can't see it! -
The spare KR on 80k still has all it's hoses so i'm hoping that I could pinch most of those and try to change them one at a time whilst the sillies are on the way
-
Cheers for the input guys. Even though I'm not gonna be keeping this engine in the car long-term, the replacement is a KR also so any partsi have to buy to keep ron working through the restoration phase can at least be re-used (if applicable). I think I will be ordering a water pump and a set of silicone hoses then. Just a shame the hoses take so long to come, and I'd have to get a Mk2 GTi set and then make up the other two! Ho hum.

No-one remotely interested in GT racing huh. -
it's definitely not coming from the flywheel end of the engine, that end is bone dry. the alternator was dripping with coolant last night, so definitely crank pulley end. I don't think 16v engines have a hose that goes into the head above the exhaust manifold, but thanks for the input.
-
Ron threw a water hose tonight. At least I think that is what it is, lots of steam pouring out from underneath the alternator? Can't see directly for obvious reasons. Anyone have any ideas? Used a torch but still couldn't see what was creating the steam, top rad hose is fully empty now though if that helps diagnosis. stat housing? plastic flange of doom? just a pipe that has finally perished? Any thoughts welcome, Ron is now on sabbatical for the foreseeable future!

yeah for sure you can swap the inners, you will have a good rack once again!

btw, it's 330lbft not lb/ft (lb multiplied by ft, not divided) it's all about Moments. -
ha ha cheers matey! you actually read my posts? I'm so honoured...

Quick update: bought some Waxoyl to do the wishbones in so that they can go on soon, started to prep and paint the spare ARB, got a job with a Lamborghini racing team, given up on the subframe so i'm gonna grab another one from a mate and use that, lower ball joints arrived, starting to put stuff together which will be cool! Pics as and when :D
-
Hi team, did anyone go to this, or has anyone been following it at all? Starting to get into it now, and was wondering if anyone had been following teams / drivers throughout the 08 season.

if you have the cover plate for the fusebox, it lists all the fuses and their locations on the back of it, so you should be able to find the fuse you're looking for in no time. welcome to financial hell btw :salute:
-
Why? if you're jacking on the subframe mounts then you're jacking up on metal plates so the underseal doesn't come into it, therefore no need to worry about tears/damage. Yep, rear axle mount points. they're the HUGE ones.

It's alright if you're not going to work on a car, but I wouldn't recommend going underneath one on four stands. General concensus is that 4 stands is dodgy: if you start hitting something or giving it any kid of lateral/horizontal force, the car has a high risk of toppling. Putting the wheels under the sills is a good safety measure, but nothing is as good as 2 stands / 2ramps combo. Read this, looks quite useful and easy to do: Make your own ramps
-
i think it weighs 1.8 shedloads so probably needs a nice gob of power to get some good acceleration out of it. That is possibly my most untechnical post yet
-
btw, you should never use 4 axle stands to put a car up on, always 2 stands and 2 ramps / blocks. Not that you would, but just for reference
