Am dubious too, 550hp is pub banter unless there's dyno plots from somewhere other than Uncle Jim's big power mopeds  I know it can be done from an engineering POV, just wanna see how this guy did it. No doubt if he's involved with Jabba it will be some awesome kit!

Wow, what elite axle stands you have and such a nice person who helped you that day! This was me and him playing, I'm pretty sure Daz wouldn't use £10 a pair Halfords axle stand! 8)

remember the rolling radius of the wheel is increased now, so your speedometer won't be as accurate. but it's a small percentage anyways ^_^

That is an awesome car.... but the amount of cheese in that article! can't find anything on google about it, perhaps some one will scan the mag article...

Anything past K reg should have a catalytic converter installed from the factory as per government legislation. Perhaps this was an early 92 or late 91, who knows? see if you can get pics up or link to the item online somewhere then people should be able to help a bit more :)

Lots of poorly designed / manufactured radiators from GSF it seems! I found the plastic pipe at the top for the cylinder head hose to be porous too, seemed to be a fair bit weaker than my original rad.
-
Thirded. GSF rad didn't sit in the crossmember dimples properly, as such kept popping out of one side despite being clamped at top by slam panel!

omg, my mum 'wrote' this one off too! she hit a pothole in reading and the LBJ came out of the wishbone and the wheel tried to do the folding under trick like on a DeLorean. one wishbone, LBJ and driveshaft later and she was back on the road. So I kinda inherited it really. Never seen another atlas jetta too although there's tons of golfs about. problem i have is that my theory and knowledge outweighs my budget and skills! Might have to make it a long-termer. tbh, might even turn into a Uni course project car! who knows.

sucks :/ i waited ages for a pump on mine only to be given a digifant one! cue one wasted weekend of engine rebuilding. the stealers are rip merchants, but sometimes you'd only go to them for a certain item and the rest you can get away with at the factors :)

yeah it's a true story. the 16v does really come into it's own on cam and hasn't much go up until that. makes me wonder why manufacturer's have spat out a number of low capacity (1.0 to 1.4l) 16v engines? I guess people who pootle around town don't care about power bands? Agree with the MFA statements though, I got mine to read 70mpg by doing the oxford ring road at 50mph....hmm.

lol yeah! if i was being a super geek, I prob have the equations somewhere to work out the engine output.. _if_ i was a geek.

lol!! I'm the same, I'll do something and just hope it doesn't break! I replaced a KR in my mk2 golf in about 6hrs once, that was an adventure. Literally spurred on by the one day crane rental to get it all finished! Got pics somewhere... Yeah, I didn't realise compression was 8:1 too, seems really low. I wouldn't wanna drive a G60 when the charger goes, prob makes about 70hp! Yeah thanks, looking forward to getting stuck in too.

I had yeah...it's currently winning being the lighter boosted as standard engine of choice! The Jetta is late spec too so has the handy CE2 electrics :) but yeah, just trying to work out the real engineering behind it, i.e. lateral acceleration through corners with different engine specs / weights etc.

My old valver used to fluctuate a lot too. In general terms, a 16v driven frugally should return a decent economy to the driver due to the design of the cylinder head. The sixteen valves allow twice as much air to flow into the combuistion chambers as it's 8v brother, encouraging a much cleaner burn cycle and producing air to fuel ratios consistently closer to the stoichiometric ideal. The 16v head is also cross flow so it won't absorb heat from the exhaust manifold once it reaches normal operating temperature. In my experience, although the inlet manfold wraps across the top of the rover cover, the air gap inbetween is enough to keep a large percentage of the heat inside the rocker cover from 'soaking' into the intake. Cheers, Jon.

Hi mate, Yeah I'd definitely replace that especially if you got the block apart at the mo. I left a dodgy pump in my valver about a year ago, next time I took it up the motorway the thing just gave up at 4000rpm! Cue oil buzzer, tim guage reading 20psi and me pootling home and stalling LOTS. Imo, not even worth the risk of leaving it in, and i'm a penniless student! hope this helps. Cheers, Jon.

Thanks for the welcome :) Course isn't going too bad, I'm 24 and have a fair bit of messing about with cars under my belt over the last 6 years so I do alright. Averaged a B+ last year... Have been thinking of a VR for the Jetta but don't particularly want it nose heavy (Firstly, I know the Raddos came with VRs and are hailed as awesome handlers and Secondly, not looking to start a debate!) so am looking at blown 16vs or perhaps the ubiquitous 20v... but that's another story. I get roped into playing with Prodigal's G60 anyways (I OWN the tools!!) which is a good laugh and his blue one a few years back was real nice. It's funny, cos the 1.8 8v in my Jetta looks pretty similar to the G60 lump, although with the obvious exceptions! Was gonna see if I could find out what the differences are, but probs won't bother. Thinking of swapping in a milkfloat motor to double the power sometime soon.

Hi guys, My name's Jon and I'm an engineering student (see sig). I haven't got a 'raddo, I roll in an older dub. Here's a pic of it: Oh wait, that's an old pic...here's a more recent one: It's atlas grey and not in too bad condition. As you can imagine, It's hard to find on a cloudy day so I haven't driven it for a while :( I'll probs be loitering around the forums (I'm Prodigal Son's younger brother) and inputting on proper physics / engineering based questions as best I can :D Not huge plans for the Jetta at the mo, still at uni so really just collecting info and saving up money. Look forward to getting stuck in! Cheers, Jon.
