Is it a wierd trait of 24v engines or something Kev? My Alfa sounded a bit similar - hollow and 'dry' - until I replaced the exhaust with a special pasta sports exhaust :) I'd think it would be more to do with the 4 valves per cyl as opposed to the 2v per cyl of the old VR. Only evidence I have for this is that the old mk2 8vs used to "bark" a lot harder than the valvers when they both had filters on... :?

I'm not sure that the bearings would ONLY screech in reverse, imho you would hear the noise the whole time?
-
aha :D I was replying to davidwort, but you were too darm quick on the keys! I guess being a student, I just consider what the engine will cost me and then sling that in whatever shell I have lying around! :?

Sweet Lord! Mr. Men books have more real engineering in than this does! I am upset and embarrassed for all of mankind. :(

Little slots with fluff in can control boost?! The jetta must be a DEMON then!

I was referring more towards _just_ the engine as opposed to a whole car, but interesting point!

Cannot re-iterate this enough. Don't go modding stuff until you know the engine is sound. Really is very very important. There's nothing lamer than a tricked out car that's broken down because the owner didn't keep it in good nick. Although i'm sure you'll take care of it :)

Someone once told me you can only have 2 out of the following 3 at any one time: Performance Cost Reliability If you have high cost and high reliability, you sacrifice performance (engine undertuned to be safe, overengineered parts etc) If you have high performance and high reliability, you sacrifice cost (paying loads and loads of money to keep the engine in high tune and as a daily for example) If you have high performance and high cost, you sacrifice reliability (frequent rebuilds, over stressing components etc) Would people agree with these statements?

the heavy duty one from GSF is quality. I had one of those on my valver, around £40-45 I think?

Engineering food for thought (4wd and Supercharged content)

   that's crazy! Sometimes it's the little things that you don't even think about that make the biggest difference. -

fair enough, no barn modding of 4wd to be tail happy then! :D @dr_mat, thanks for that update. Very interesting stuff! I am in the midst of buying textbooks for this year, but am hoping to get by on my olds and use the money to buy more interesting engine books. woot! -

with the 4wd setups, would it be ridiculous to convert one to RWD by blanking the driveshaft hubs at the front and just running the prop out of the rears? I guess you'd still get a lot of power loss and the system prob wouldn't work that great? I guess the mech one might be ok, but the Haldex might throw a fit with it's computer? -

Cheers John, that's some quality information. I was just thinking about it really. Ideally (and what an awesome if non-economical project...) I would like to play with a VR6 turbo grafted to 4wd system. But then this would be in the Jetta. New definition of boost-brick? It's all ideas anyways, I'm always thinking more than doing, especially with my Poverty Spec income! :( I will check out BBB's 4wd post again, it does make a good read. -

Cheers for the info, that's awesome. Any idea why the two sets of impellors spin (freely) with different frictions? I guess thig might be how a superchargers blades should spin at a governed and constant velocity, varying only with engine speed? -
Yes, that's right. I am going to put my university musings up on the interweb! ^_^ First thoughts were about 4wd. In my mind, it drives all four wheels and thus more power is lost from engine through the transmission. I'm 90% confident this is because of the friction/mass/drag of the system. If someone made lightweight props and driveshafts would this loss be reduced? Obviously lightweight magnesium alloy wheels will help reduce the mass and increase rotational acceleration, but can the 4wd systems be improved greatly....what is the new Haldex system like?, I hear it's electronically controlled as opposed to the old syncro / UR Quattro mechanical systems that I had in mind. On a sidenote, does anyone know if there is a roadgoing 4wd standard/high-performance (Evos, Subarus etc) transmission system with equal to or less than 20% of engine power needed to drive it?? Hope i'm wording this right, it makes sense in my head ! With regards to superchargers, do they leech power due to the increase in air pressure they are generating or is the leech purely mechanical drag? If it's purely mechanical, could someone make a carbon fibre pulley and a lightened woven-kevlar ribbed belt to overcome these issues? Do you see where I'm going with this? If it is purely mechanical drag too, surely the charger insides could be lightened / cast from different materials. If anyone has information from racing / championship supercharged engine backgrounds, I would be more than happy to listen! Hope this is a good read, Jon :D I am all about efficiency!

Retro cars did an article on their Capri V8 using these a couple of years back. You pretty much weld the threaded tube over the top of your shock and use it as a kind of barn-style coilover.

Have I missed some New Rules on Motorway Driving?
boost monkey replied to Jay2's topic in General Car Chat
Could the mods perhaps made a "Rant" section on the board so that we can file all these kinds of posts in there? -
That's a tidy oaky there, good work! How is your towing thing attached? the one on my mk2 is welded :(
-
Depends entirely on what oil he is using (grade and quality) but you're right on the basis that oil starts to break down at high temperatures. OP, what oil are you using and what cooler? 140dec for oil temp sounds a lot higher than a stock VR should be getting. When did you last flush the oil and do a change?

^^^ front N/S bleed nipple PWNT yesterday, so awaiting new caliper #3. :( :( :(
-
Go get an ISO replacement plug from Halfords. They'll be like £7. With regards to the wiring diagram for the Corrado, if it's the same as a mk2 I can help, otherwise I/someone could scan in the wiring diagram for the corrado perhaps?
-
looks sick...in a good way 8) what colour is it?
-
someone help him, else he'll be pinching my mk2 for work! :(

84 year old man still driving his first car!

Nissan Sunny's are obviously the initial car buying prequel to severe VW eliteness in later life
