  1. using the tacho reading of 317 whole mile units, and doing the sums of how much petrol I just filled up with, the golf is still doing 34mpg average. Considering this is 98% on ring roads and motorway, shouldn't I be seeing a bit more? I'm planning to order a bunch of stuff soon to see if that will increase the mpg. tbh, I do give it the boot now and again when the traffic eases up, perhaps the mini hoons drink more than I think they do. I've BIN'd a 2nd hand centre box as I managed to track my exhaust hole down to a rusty weld between pipe and box inlet. Hopefully this will quiet things down and give me a bit more merpurguh (mpg). I'm holding off doing the stat until i do the belt, but tbh maybe I should just get the stat done. ---------- Post added at 01:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:51 PM ---------- I am playing with the idea of taking it up to DG (75 miles from Ox - anyone recommend someone closer?) for a tune up and seeing if they can discover something up with the engine. I really wish I had the time to do it, but I just don't at the moment. I need the car as a daily too so it'll be a weekend jobby.
  2. I love spelling things wrong. Grammer Trolling is so much fun  where has your profile pic gone? Pretty sure I recognised that guy from Emmerdale or something like it.
  3. looks like someone shat on it.
  4. ^^ for people without the brawn to lift a wheel AND locate it at the same time?
  5. porous rubber hoses may be letting air into the system. Probably worth swapping them out if they're not all braided.
  6. i broke a very good tap when trying to dig out a snapped disc bolt so IMHO it really isn't worth the hassle!
  7. just get new mk2 golf items. Much better especially the pump pulley which will be solid. ---------- Post added at 01:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:03 PM ---------- also I wouldn't use 2nd hand belts. Asking for trouble.
  8. I got the car washed and the new MFA stalk on last night. Gave it a quick clean and a lube of the mech and contacts and all seems to be well again! The steel pin OEM+ version may be for sale  Hoping to take a long weekend soon and do the Cambelt, stat, water pump and PAS/fan belts. Also need a centre box as it's blowing at the front end where the pipe goes into the silencer.
  9. i was thinking maybe some wings aswell :-) not for you. Unless you give me cake.
  10. Thanks everyone. My boss has got an original Quattro so we've been having good chats about old VW/Audi stuff which is nice. It's a shame there's about 20 2-post lifts downstairs in the factory, and all the tools you'd ever need (and Wurth products!) and no chance of using them!
  11. So the car was running like ass yesterday. It was really down on power, and didn't even have enough go for overtaking on the A34! I put it down to the air temp of 22deg before 8am :-o - these 8valves really are night and day with cool and hot intake air aren't they? I wonder if the two manifold locations has anything to do with that. I also picked up a mint steering column upper and lower trim panel (to replace the one which was siliconed together and after my stalk fiasco remains sellotaped!) for the princely sum of £1.04 plus postage. Gotta love it :D still on the lookout for a rear box in VGC as i'm still sure mine is blowing there. SOunds a bit too raspy with the windows down at the mo. I think i might goop some firegum over it though and see if it improves. I still have no front washer so I'm gonna have to wipe the windscreen clean tomorrow - god forbid I should wash the car! seriously though I will wash it when i have more than 7mins of free time.
  12. Oh, and FYI Fishwick and Neil, they use pretty much the whole range of Wurth products!
  13. oh sweet lord. Who talked him into this! I'm pretty sure you are a glutton for punishment or are aiming for a World Record here, Andy!
  14. cheers vag :D yeah not had an 8v before, I quite like it. very good point, I forgot about that one time and watched the MPG on #1 creep up into the 50s before I realised the tacho wasn't reading! annoyed I didn't fit my spare stalk this weekend, as the DIY'd one is playing up again and I had no washers on friday. Ugh.
  15. they're all over ebay! I know cos i've been looking for an early and only found one :@
  16. I refilled the tank tonight (ASDA - 130.7!) and the sums tell me i'm doing 34mpg. Not great seeing as that's 95% extra-urban but i do like to put my foot down when a gap emerges on the commute! The exhaust is sounding a bit raspy, so I'm hoping to find a decent rear box (i know this is corroded) which I'll swap first, and then work forwards from there. I'm worried about the stat. I just don't know when I will find time to do it. As we all know, having to work on your daily can be a bit worrying!
  17. Hey Crocodile Dundee! brake lines are fun, and quite easy once you see how they are laid out.
  18. Cheers, it's in automotive but slightly specialist. It's a mobility company which modifies larger cars/vans to accept wheelchair access via ramps. Commonly known as Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles or WAVs. It's a contrect to help with a feasibility study for a new model. As the middle section of the floor (and all chassis members) are cut out from right behind the front seats all the way to the rear, the compnay needs help with designing and developing things like cross members and subframes. Also considerations into fuel and exhaust systems as they are modified - fuel tank replaced with a S/S cell, and exhaust rerouted. Also handbrake cables rerouted and many other considerations so it's a lot to look at. It's very interesting, and plays to my strengths of design. I've even had to learn the Sheet Metal processes of the CAD package so I'm looking to use that on the Plum also, perhaps just to make something as simple as a new battery tray. It's cool to be able to draw something and then click a button and watch it flat-pack with all the folds and bends removed. Whether they'll keep me on past 6 months I'm not sure. Either way it's good experience.
  19. Thanks everyone. Group hug? No idea when the Plum will get finished as the wedding is now only 4 weeks away, I'm hoping after that! :D
  20. It's true, mathematically you can calculate the weight transfer both left to right and front to rear, with and without ARBs. basically, a negative number for a wheel load will mean that wheel is up in the air, and very high numbers will mean there's a huge load on that wheel (always the outside wheel in a corner). not got much time at the mo, but i will try to elaborate if needs be.
  21. Despite all my worrying, I managed to get a 2:1 which I was really pleased with. I landed my first engineering design job in the same day! Only downer is commuting 50 miles a day from Ox to Newbury, and the A34 can be riddled with traffic and even crashes due to being a regular commuter route. I just started today, and been doing tech drawings all morning with a view to modelling them in CAD this avo. It's just a 6 month contract but i'm hoping there's a chance of a permanent job at the end of the year :D either way it's great experience and feels good to have my foot on the bottom rung of my career ladder.
  22. Been a bit quiet lately, got my results and my first graduate job in the same day (last Monday)! so that was pretty cool. I've been temping all the time too, and just started grad job today :D I'll update the Plum with my life story  anyways, back to the golf. I been playing with the CL last night. I've found 4 hoses: blue running under the centre section of the boot carpet, pink running down drivers side bodywork, very short yellow (about 4 inches - thought it had snapped off) very long yellow, seems to go up into the tailgate mech? before I just had the long yellow going directly onto the CL pump which would just mean the tailgate opened from the key and none of the 4 doors (although key turn obviously caused drivers to open!) anyways, the blue had a T junction on it, so I connected the blue and pink and short yellow to this, and the other end of the short yellow to the CL pump. Now the 4 doors unlock from the CL, and the tailgate doesn't work off the CL. Much better than before but anyone know if I need to T in the long yellow line to allow the tailgate to open from the CL also? The front mount has made low speed stop starting much much smoother, got a bit of driveshaft shake now so gonna have to look into that at some point.
  23. I found the problem to the fact that the car seemed to lurch when on part throttle and jerk back again when off. It wasn't the throttle cable. It was the front mount. I swapped it yesterday with a brand ne.w one I'd stored ready for the Plum. The old golf one was a hydro one with the big metal cover. I got it off and it didn't seem too bad but I could easily move the pin which attaches to the engine bracket so I binned it and replaced with the new one. Now it doesn't lurch or jerk, and when the revs drop to around 1000rpm and you're slowing down the bonnet and front end don't shake violently! So I'm glad I got that done. I still have to do the thermostat and cambelt. Also the fanbelt and pas belt are a bit worn, so I think a stripdown of that side of the engine at some point will happen. I'll probably put the new waterpump on also, scavenge a few more parts off the old KR before it finally dies. Had some temping work in Banbury this week, spotted a dark red (Bordeaux?) Corrado and another Aqua blue one with crystal rears - anyone know them? I thought perhaps people would recognise me in the Golf but I guess that was a bit far fetched! old fella in the Bordeaux looked pretty miserable! Aqua was oncoming so didn't get as good a look at it.
