  1. yeah, VR wishbones / track control arms look a fair bit different to the 4-pot ones...Maybe I just read too many VR build threads :/
  2. there's a change early to late spec: 17 to 19mm IIRC? actually that might be Mk2s! Can anyone confirm?
  3. Legend!! yeah, it can be hard work but I just love doing it. Both prod and I have been out underneath cars in the most insane weather just cos we want to get something finished! Maybe we're just loco :cuckoo: yeah, very similar to the mk2. In fact that beam is a mk2 one. Just some subtle differences to the corrado one which i've investigated and won't be a problem. From what I hear BPRs are a PITA in general, think I lucked out by finding a newish one on the back of the plum.

  5. The beam is now bushed! Woo hoo :clap: I got it back from the garage today, thanks to ProdigalSon :notworthy: :king: Shame I didn't leave the Metal Ready treatment long enough to cure, as you can see how it's bubbled a little through the first layer of paint. Luckily, it is still rust proof. Offside Bush, obviously eased through with some copper grease. Looks like it might have needed a little smack with a hammer! :ignore: Nearside bush, also has some grease left on it. Well chuffed with the work done by the garage although the owner did ask me how many more press jobs I had for them (So far it'll be 1 wheel bearing, 2 cross members with 4 bushes each, and now the 2 rear beam bushes! :lol:) They're a good garage though, and I'll be taking the car there for the MOT :salute: Other bits from before waiting to go on. Both stub axles on the left, then the rear brake pads on the right and both spring top plates underneath those. The big febi box at the bottom is one i've had for ages. Has the front engine mount in, plus the CM/RSP bolts in for the front end, and also random bits and bobs like new brake hoses etc etc. New sachs shocks at the back, box to the front has 2 bags pretty much brimming with probably all the fittings you'll ever need for a rear beam and some other little bits for the front end too. Also has stoneguards for rear beam, and discs in febi boxes underneath. Bag to the left has handbrake cables, bump stops, rubber top mounts and bellows in. :eek: Did a bit of shopping today too :nono: :lol: Prod and I went halves on the Waxoyl kit (my carpets are still out, so I may give the sills a little waxage), black hammerite is for my other rear caliper, and possibly the rear beam brackets (if I do have to keep them on afterall :pale: ) and the little pot is Aubergine Hammerite! I am thinking maybe colour coded front 280s? 8) I'm not one to detail a car, but it was only £2.50 for the pot :nuts: What the cool kids are reading nowadays. Bound paperback on the top is the Grp A Mk2 Golf 16v Tech Specs :norty:
  6. Yeah, you could end up with a sack of crap too. If the OP isn't mechanically minded, he could probably get his mechanic to find him a reasonable engine? I just buy engines from whoever and they've all been fine so far (apart from the one in my car - but i didn't put that one in) but they could easily have been dogs, that's true. Yeah, it's fair points. I guess i'm just more aware of how insane engine rebuilds cost after thinking long and hard about whether I'm actually going to do mine now. Seems a helluva lot of money. Do VEGE still do 16v engines?

  8. Yeah VW will still do the switches I'm pretty sure. Very good question with the light, not too sure myself as normally high temp and low coolant level will be at the same time as it starts to boil off! :lol:
  9. yeah completely jay, as mentioned twice now(!) a few hundred will be labour. I'm not against anyone rebuilding their engine, I just think it's a false economy. I picked up a 10,000 mile showcar engine which just crawled everywhere so the bling didn't get dirty for a few hundred. Unless you have a specific engine that you want to build, I'd recommend buying second hand. There are a lot of good engines out there, as Jay has found.

Ditto waynos, temp switch is bottom right corner of rad when looking at front of car (side nearest battery) but how did you check the water when it was 104 degrees? it would have spewed out everywhere in your engine bay due to the pressure of it :scratch: did you leave it to cool down first? you might have an air leak too, your radiator fan should be coming on before 104 degrees for sure, but remember that the MFA temp is oil temperature and not coolant temp. the nice needle to the left of the readout is for that.
  16. Keep going with it Kate, tbh seems like you're looking for a reason to give up on it? :shrug: mine's out of MOT now, hence why I am doing tons of work to get a nice new green VOSA sheet :grin:
  17. springs / new suspension generally settles lower than it should do. not sure about -20mm springs. is there much point? this last line doesn't make sense to me, but then i'm quite tired!
  18. You mean because the plate is squashed against the mount, or the plate is sitting high? all of my VWs have plates that sit like that, pretty sure it's normal.
  19. for a temporary fix, you can still tilt the seat forward (think that's what you mean?) by releasing the hook at the base of the seat with your hand.
  20. you could strip the paint back a bit and then retint after the test perhaps?
  21. yeah, VR box mounts are hydraulic but dave has a 9A so he's right in thinking that box mounts are all rubber (as far as his car is concerned!) Try VW Spares / AVS . Febi parts (who supply VW) but without the huge markup. Most of my car has their stuff on and it's top notch. Many people on here will recommend them to you. Just looked and they're £16.95 + VAT + Postage.
  22. Sorry, didn't open the pic and the thumbnail looked like they were braided! :nuts: AFAIK, C VR6 CMs are different to the Mk3 ones so treat it nice! :grin:
  23. Parts are gonna be easily £500 if they replace crank and pistons (let alone the rest) and the labour is eeeeeasily another £500 normally! sound like an average price to me.
  24. if you don't torque the front suspension top nuts up properly there will be play in the top mounts, regardless of age.
