i would place rather large money on this being your front engine mount. My golf did exactly the same - the engine has a large torsion (twist) force back towards the firewall (just watch any turbo'd engine on a dyno) which places a large tension force on the front engine mount. if the bolts has fallen out or the mount is dead, either the bracket (or bracket with mount attached!) will rise up, and then subsequently drop down with a thud or a bang onto the front cross member when you let off the gas or change gear. This is because 1st gear is so short and thus has the largest amount of torsion or twist force applied to the engine. hope that makes sense. Jon.

as steve said, easiest with the front end off but if you remove the bonnet you *might* be able to pull it all straight up and out. or if you're feeling low rent, you can drop it all onto the floor and then crane the CAR over the top of it!

17 inch rims and lowering - will it mess up the handling?

plenty plenty plenty articles on this mate, use the search. technically, it will misalign your suspension geometry unless you do something to correct it. -

looking good, why did you weld up the sump pan though? new ones are only £20 from AVS! -
possible electrical or sensor fault?
-
where did it snap, the head side (inner),half way along the shaft or at the nut end (inside the rear beam)?
-
hang on a sec, the avo suspension has snapped or the bolt? if the suspension has snapped then you're kinda fooked. If the bolt has snapped, you may well be able to still get it out depending on where the snappage occurred. More info required!

GKN make a lot of bearings, good quality ones too. Good luck, and keep us informed!

Crap, yeah course you do! It's even in my own picture  I need sleep :/

deffo replace the LBJ bolts, they always seem to be the hardest to get off and the lack of space around both ends doesn't help things. one thing you should know about the CVs is that the circlip is a one-use item (like so many other things!) and probably worth replacing for peace of mind seeing as they're about 13p each.

Bump Steer - Thoughts on upside-down track rod ends?

Kevlar seats :luvlove: -
David, see my project thread. I have done both those things in the last few months :salute: (Realistically, what haven't I done? :pale: ) Outer CV swap, page 30 ish Isn't the search a wonderful thing? ;) Edit: think the CV comes on it's own and the boot in a seperate pack (hence why I had 2 hub nuts), along with pre-installed grease so no messy hands, and also a new hub nut usually. See my thread for more info and pics.

awesome updates pete! Drive-Thru ratchets are soooooooooooo good :D yes it is a bit nippy outside at the mo isn't it! I'm wearing my boiler suit purely for an extra layer, let alone to keep the muck off! circlip pliers always seem to be that non-essential special tool, until you do your rack and CVs at the same time ;) well worth having in the toolbox I reckon, still not got mine (rack and CVs are zip-tied :pale:) -
bah, beaten by Rainbow.

Shouldn't have a problem with longer bolts there, I've just pulled out one of my rear discs and the ABS cage actually shys away from the bolt holes if that makes sense? Should have clearance for another 15mm of thread.

 good tip! there is an article in the Knowledge Base on how to change the filter too although I think it's for a 16v.

I don't even know what particular panels weigh in order to see whether CF panels would save a lot. Plus you'd really want to keep the car for infinity+5 years just to see the recoup off those! -
Any good? Just a vagcat screenshot really - all the rear beams are listed with this picture.

heavy cars suck. Kev and I were saying about how there doesn't seem to be much you can strip out of them either :/ -
Replaced PCV and FPR on VR6. What a difference.
boost monkey replied to aclwalker's topic in Engine Bay
I think they're mainly recirculated craig because if there wasn't any pipework, there would just be a hole in the engine? Obviously they're there to relieve increased crankcase pressure, and also may well be used to give the engine a warm supply of air shortly after starting the engine (off the top of my head!), similar to how the pipe off the exhaust manifold works. -
get out :| seriously though, glad it's working again. keep an eye on your fuel pump, if the whining gets a lot louder then it could well be on its last legs and will leave you stranded if it packs up.

CLEAN  ditto keep the small bumpers, looks a lot better. Mine had smalls cos it was an E-reg :salute:

pics look awesome!! :notworthy: to you for making up new shafts, that's very cool. They can be fiddly with the circlips though huh! Well worth it though IMO. Glad other forum members are taking on larger restorative / preventative works on their cars too :salute:
