Tricky one to do a how to for. It takes a lot of trial and error. Basics though are to strip the ash tray down to nothing but the tray and the flap, remove all of the springs and damping mechanism along with all of the gubbins holding the front button in place. The a4 ashtray is basically exactly the right size to slide in to the tray, all you need to do is remove the plastic from the back of the tray, junior hack saw and pliers work well. I found with mine that the cup holder is gripped just a bit to tightly once slid in, this stops it ejecting smoothly. To free it up I shaved a couple mm from each side of the ashtray, down to a depth of a cm or so, this means the very bottom of the holders is still gripped tightly but the rest of the sides aren't under pressure. I filled this gap later with hot glue. Then it's just a case of playing with position until it lines up and is in the right place to allow the push to open to work. Use hot glue gun and super glue in as many places as you can to get the holder stuck in there good and strong.

another trip the body shop today: also made some progress on a second set of rear lights that I am going to go all read with rubbed down and lettering removed masked up and ready to spray with tint later car should be getting 'wet' this week so hopefully so pics with new paint towards the weekend

are you using the car at all? once you've put a new battery in it will need to be driven a bit as the battery may not have full charge in it. also have you checked your ground? The ground / negative to the battery seems to have been the culprit for my battery drain issues. Once the garage had spotted that and tightened it up properly its been ok...

cup holder in ashtray mod done... vid

finished my version of this over the weekend. I adjusted positioning slightly so that i could push on the original flap to release the mechanism. Haven't tried in situ yet as have no access to the rado at the moment http://vid140.photobucket.com/albums/r24/borarob/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-06/20150628_103019.mp4

Cool pics, thanks for posting! Will out this in my diary for next year ....
-
Yeah that's participants in vw only. Not even all VAG, so my audi is out! Hope it's been good...
-
Wanted to go to this but £25 each is a bit steep if not arriving in a vw (ill be in an audi as the c not done yet). Only went to Beaulieu recently so wouldn't be getting my money's worth. Gonna go to vdub at the pub instead. Enjoy the show, post some pics!

Will be nice to know when I get it back that it is all solid and there's no rot hiding anywhere! Guess they always have to look worse before getting better. You can't make an omelette.....
-
i ran mine up the a pillar
-
so stripping the stoneguard was definitely a good idea, it was hiding a right mess. Once water gets in between it and the metal its curtains for your sill. outwardly the sill looked fine so be warned!! new metal now in for the side repeater in the wing... got some bits to drop in this avo so hopefully a few pics of the fixed sills!
-
Looks fantastic. Is hard work but so worth it when the time comes to stand back and admire
-
i've decided to keep the rear wiper. I don't want to do anything that can't be put back to original so if i decide later to lose it i'll go down the grommet route... THe suspension is nothing special, just a cheap kit to get the height I wanted. Plan is to fit bags next year so didn't want to spend loads on coils now...

Looks great makes me miss my old red one. What have you done to the headlights and fogs/indicators? Love the subtle tint is it film or spray?

Went to see progress today, not as much done as he'd hoped as some little jobs needed clearing last week. Over the next couple / three weeks it will pretty much be sole focus so should come on well. Found a few holes that needed welding up, some pretty major rot around bottom of passenger wing and inner arch and sill. I'm going for gloss black rear plate holder and completely colour coded mirrors. Have new gloss black rear vw badge to go on so to continue the theme going for gloss black corrado script rather than colour coded. So now I'm thinking front grille gloss black as well? Also I've decided only to reapply stoneguard stuff to the very bottom of the sills and have the rest smooth. new metal for indicator needed Took the ashtray out while I was there so I could start the A4 cup holder mod

I know you're right, gonna go in to see him today. As far as I'm concerned shaun is Mr vw, I used to live opposite him when I was a kid, and his many projects were the reason I fell in love with dubs.
-
Yeah he said he'd recently done another one. I trust you were happy?
-
I'm going in tomorrow morning to have a look and talk about the mirrors being completely colour coded and rear plinth and handles being gloss black. Def going to leave the side strips off. Was going to see about de-wipering the back by properly welding up and smoothing the hole but I'm now leaning towards the old rubber grommet trick just in case I ever want to put the wiper back on! Peed off with VW Classic Parts, thought i was in luck with getting new outside window scrapers, got one side from heritage and the other from DE as unlike heritage it was showing as in stock. Anyway after days waiting for it to arrive I check my email and find a german email explaining they didn't have stock after all!
