The problem with the cheaper cabinets is they're not deep enough, a 17mm spanner and above has to go diagonally when placed in the drawers of the top box and they're shallow too. By write off do you mean cat c or d, or are you talking of cat b break only? Cat c would need a vic check after being repaired, cat d could just be repaired and driven.

If the sale of the gearbox falls through I'll take it and collect at the weekend?

Check the condition of the battery to earth connection at the gearbox, check for frayed cables at the ends. Starters consume heavy current when cranking, you may have 12V+ at the cable ends but is the cable capable of carrying this heavy current? Check the cable from the battery to the starter too.
